it seems somewhat difficult to press the "up" button on the smt5600.. i always end up pressing it a few times before it finally goes.

is there a fix for this?

the specs on the 5600 say ".3GP/.MP4/.WMV formats 100KB maximum in video file size. (Audio included)" does that mean that video files recorded by the phone are limited to 100kb each?

I went to check out the SMT5600 at my local cingular store.  It'll cost me 249.99 with a 2 year contract.  I am an AT&T carry over, so they are making me sign up for a contract.

The salesman said I HAD to purchase a data plan to use this phone...Is he correct, or just trying to sell a data plan?

i have at&t... i have no data plan

Does anyone know of any retailers selling straight unbranded? Having worked for both AT&T and Cingular I really just hate to see their logos on phones as despite my employers I have been a loyal t-mo customer for some time now.

Anybody noticed performance difference from a factory vs. an aftermarket unlocked? Am I just being too picky? (actually got a sticker to cover up the ATTWS on my mpx200) Recommendations on cing branded vs att branded?

Is the switch from mpx200 to SMT5600 worth it?

Anyone had success using 850 with t-mo (some roaming agreements have supposedly been inked) when no service was available? What about forcing the phone to a different network even if t-mo was available?

i actually just got my smt5600 in the mail about 4 hours ago. so far i love it more than i could have ever loved my mpx200 biggrin.gif

i got it through Lock/Line insurance as a replacement for my mpx200 unbranded. not sure it is unlocked as they sent it to me w/ a spare AT&T sim (and i use AT&T anyway).

GSMWorld

Looks like they mainly use 3G, but judging from other things I would bet that they use the 900 like the majority of the world does with a little 1800 here and there, but that is all a guess.

ok, i'm not too familiar with 3g... but i'm assuming in a high tech city like tokyo, i would probably get some kinda service on an smt5600, right? unsure.gif

I suppose i'll call cingular/at&t first and see what they can offer, and go from there.

i just did a search for international prepaid SIM's and there's plent out there, but on all the lists of countries, japan was on none. any idea's on why this is?

They will just SIM unlock the phone so you can use any SIM card from any provider in the world.  You could pick up a prepaid SIM card when you got to Japan from a cellphone store if you wanted to go that route.  I don't know for sure exactly how the procedure of getting a prepaid SIM works though as I have never done it myself.

Would it be the same kind of thing as in 7-11? the prepaid phones they sell? maybe they have it there... i guess i'll have to look into this.

QUOTE (smeg36 @ May 21 2005, 06:06 AM)
The SMT5600 is already tri-band.  It is 850, 1800/1900Mhz bands.  I don't know what frequency they use in Japan, but if it is one of those you are good to go.  If it is 900Mhz, it won't work there.  The MPx200 had firmware that would show the 900Mhz band available when you flashed it.  However, the phone didn't actually have the 900Mhz band, it just showed it in the software.  That is probably what you are thinking of.

If you are going over seas, are you planning on using a prepaid SIM card when you get over there, or just go international roaming on your carrier?  If you are going to use a prepaid SIM, you will need to SIM unlock it so it can use the prepaid (assuming of course that they use the 850, 1800, or 1900Mhz band).  You can get this done at www.imei-check.co.uk for about $38.
*

I was considering just using roaming.

so at www.imei-check.co.uk i can get both the unlock and a prepaid sim or just the unlock? where would i go for a prepaid SIM to use?

It is an incredible phone, and you are getting a great deal with that exchange.  You won't be disappointed.

now,i saw something about unlocking it to triband? i only ask because i'm due to leave for japan in three weeks and i'd like to have a phone that might, possibly, work while i am there.

hey guys.. i've got a pretty general question here...

i'm getting an smt5600 in the mail on an insurance exchange from a slightly less than functional mpx200.

it wasn't realy my chioce.. the insurance (lock/line) doesn't stock mpx200's anymore so they said this is a "comprable" model.

so, am i any worse off? besides the windows 2003, a camera and bluetooth and such... it seems like i'm on the winning end of all this.

anything i should know about this phone before i sign the fedex receipt for it?

anyone in this general vacinity notice anything odd this past weekend? my mpx200 has been having some trouble. for a couple hours today and yesterday, i had at least 3 bars of reception, but the phone gave me a message that it was unable to dial the number. also, people later told me that they tried calling me and got some message from AT&T and couldn't reach me. i thought it was just my phone, but then i tried making an out going call on my girlfriends Nokia 6800 (also with AT&T) and had the same problem.

I was looking around and found this SDIO card, designed for Palm that enables a bluetooth connection. I know its very unlikely, but does it possibly work with the mpx200? anyone know/try?

when i went to ATT (local store) about my SIM failure, they told me since my 30 day ATT warranty was up, i should go through Moto.. and moto would most likely send me a new phone to replace mine. the ATT rep i spoke to also offered me a loaner phone to use with my sim card for no charge. very nice of them. although, the problem was fixed by replacing the original battery with a new one (also courtesy of ATT).

hmm... i guess its something wrong with the battery rather than the sim card? is it possible that battery performance can effect the phone from accessing the sim card?

no, he asked me if there was any way to do a master reset... sorry, my hi-tech vocab isn't up to par. but yea, they were prepared to give me a loaner phone and all while i sent my phone back under warrenty, but then he had the idea about the battery. also, i read about someoen else having this problem and being charged $25 for having the phone repaired. it was explained to me thatyou can go through ATT and they will send the phone to motorola for repair, charging 25, or you can send it to motorolla yourself, where they will either repaire your phone or replace it with a brand new one.

i had the same problem. i recommend having a sim card failure, followed by replacing the battery and flashing the phone, as that worked perfectly for me.

but seriously, try just flashing it.

ok so here's whats happened... i flashed it last night... didn't help. so i let the phone discharge overnight, which was easy since the battery was at 50% and the display and external display were on full brightness and woudln't turn off even if i closed the phone. went to my local AT&T store. they were about to replace the flash, when the guy decideds to try a new battery. he puts in a new battery, asks me to flash the phone (since he didn't know how to) and amazingly enough, with a new battery, the phone works just fine, and all the info on my sim card was still there.

maybe all you that replaced your phones after a "sim failure" should go back and demand a new battery to go along with it, as i just got a new one for free.

well, after all my problems with the phone not syncing... i was out tonight, and i noticed the external display didn't autodim. so i open the phone, and its totally frozen. i try to do a soft reset. no luck. so all i can really do is pull the battery. after i put the battery back in, the phone starts up on its own, and after booting up for a LONG long time, it says "sim failure" on the title bar and the only options i have are "unlock" so i press the left soft button, and the option just disapears.

apparently i had a sim card failure? well now the phone won't turn off unless i take the battery out. i tried a hard reset, but it didn't fix anything. any recomendations?

well, i've done both.. sort of. i opened activesync and did the "get connected" where it tries to automatically detect it, and it never finds it. i've also uninstalled the Windows CE USB sync, and reinstalled activesync.. i didn't restart the computer in between those two steps. i guess that might work. any ideas on how to get both the palm and my phone working together? i don't think my computer likes either of them

sidenote: any at&t customers get a letter saying that if you fill out a rebate form from at&t, you get a free 32 meg mmc card? i just sent mine in. its only 32 megs but thats enough to use for some backup files i suppose. that, and its free.

for months now, my mpx200 has been syncing fine. yesterday, i borrowed a palm m130 and hooked it up to my computer. for some reason, it wouldn't hotsync. i installed all the software and such for it, and my computer would detect a new usb connection, but the palm just wasn't detected so i decided i'd give up for the day and try the next day. then i noticed that my MPX200 wasn't syncing either. i uninstalled and reinstalled all the software and drivers for it, but it still isn't found.

device manager shows something connected through usb, but activesync simply doesn't know my phone is connected. the phone still charges through the usb cable, but i cannot access the phone through my computer.

any ideas?
