Nope, from what I can gather, none of the firmware flashes will actually "unblock" the 900 band even though it will show it in network selections.  Some have confirmed the latest "fix" for the 900 band on the phone though, so I am considering flashing mine and taking it with me when I go over to be used as a backup, and to at least test.

You could always buy an MPX200 from Ebay that is already "unlocked" for use on GSM 900.

I like my MPX200 running Smart 2002. It's a decent phone. I'm pretty impressed with it's surfing capabilities. I tried 2003, but it had troubles with eating batteries. Even on 2002 the battery life leaves much to be desired sad.gif

Finally, on a "wish list" it would be great if this phone had an option for a self powered thumb keyboard, trying to text and e-mail using the usual keypad is the pits.

I ended up using my MPX200 do to some websurfing while on training.
Turns out, they didn't allow for access from the training site, thus I did
some via my phone.

I did very few things, check e-mail, read 2 or 3, check 2-3 stock quotes.
This ended up being a whoping 449kb. Yeah, I know it isn't that much, but
seems like an aweful lot when you're getting charged 3cents per kb!

Anyhow, I know one of my mistakes is using full fledged websites, which I might
add, were displayed pretty nicely. I'd like to know some tips and tricks on
kb minimizing and get some links to low bandwidth sites for checking on things
such as weather, stock quotes, news, ect...

So for yahoo mobile e-mail worked pretty good. Same goes for hotmail.

One other thing is page caching, is it reloading the page every time or is the
phone smart enough to cache the previously loaded paged? It was showing
connecting messages everytime an use the previous button.

I just bought an unlocked brand new (AT&T) MPX200.  Using it (or at least trying to) with T-mobile.  Have the same problem using original factory earpiece that came with the phone inside the box.  Calls hang up all the time.  I have not tried any other earpieces yet ...

I had returned my unlocked AT&T MPX200 and was sent a new one with WM2002, not unlocked, with OEM earpiece. FWIW The phone works fine with the Moto earpiece but still fails with my aftermarket Jabra. I think the culprit was the earpiece.

Also note that the phone is kinda strange, it seems that if I'm talking into the phone I can't hear or the person on the other end cuts in and out? I'm wondering if this behavior is somehow related to the hangup issue. I'm still connected I just can't hear for a sec or 2.

So I just got an MPX200 from my buddy... It's been upgraded to 2003 and unlocked the whole 9.  My major question is how do I use GPRS?  I have Cingular and on my old phone I just pressed a button and went to the cingular online news group/store.

Also:
Can I use mp3's as ringtones?  If so, how do I select one as my ringtone?
How do I use an uploaded image as my backround?

Any other tips would be greatyl apreciated.  I'm not really up to speed on cellphones but I'm a fast study...

T-Mobile has the best, cheapest, most all inclusive plans out there.  Some providers have close plans, around $25/month.  But if I understand correctly they charge extra fees if you tether to a computer or Pocket PC.  It is only for the phone.  And some providers have plans that only include some content, and not others.  Then you would be worried about getting charges extra fees at the end of the month.  With T-Mobile, if you can get your phone to do it, it is included in the price.  There are no extra fees, even if you shouldn't have been able to use that feature (a prime example is all of us that were able to get unlimited, full internet for nothing!).  I had full internet access for about 6 months last year with the Included WAP plan, and didn't get charged a cent.  T-Mobile found out about it eventually, and just closed the port.  They didn't charge any fees or anything.  I now use the $19.99/month plan, and it is fantastic.  Worth every penny.

That's good to know. I might have to consider switching.

I notice a lot of the users here use T-mobile. I also notice that it seems to be
the cheapest for connecting to the internet.

Do any of you have suggestions or explainations for the cheapest/best internet
access by cell phone?

I've noticed big difference in usability after installing 2003, but maybe got a phone with bad 2002 if possible... If you're just basic user, don't upgrade. If you like taking the maximum of every device you play with, then upgrade... biggrin.gif

This is kinda my dilemma. I'm a gadget freak and don't like having old software when I
know a newer version is available. However, unless the new software provides some
sort of value, it's just not worth the hassle.

I'm still a newbie with the mpx200, so I guess I'll just need to use it and see if I come
across anything I need or want 2003.

However, I'll say the longer battery life under 2002 is a welcomed change. I had a mpx200 with 2003 for a few weeks and it didn't fare as well.

Is there anything I would be missing out on by not having 2003?
I know about the media player being different, but couldn't I
just load it on 2002?

My phone currently has 2002 and seems to be running just fine.

Is there a list of most useful apps on the MPX200?
I know of a few good ones, pocket music, sprite backup.

Wondering if there are any good browsers
chat programs, or other useful tools for the mpx.

BTW how did you purchase it from Germany? Was shipping horendous? Were you just able to provide your credit card number?

I'm on my second mpx200. I was having trouble with the first one hanging up on hand free after 2 or 3 seconds while in a moving car. I tried the same handsfree jabra
with the second phone and the same results.

However, when I used the included motorola brand headphone it works fine!
I can't see any difference between the two handsfree earbuds. Does anyone know
if need to buy specific Motorola 2.5 mm headphone kits?

Do you have a link for the specific battery from ebay?

You should update us in about a week to see if things are still good. wink.gif

Does anyone know if the mpx200 has a true usb port? I'm wondering if it would be possible to use one of those mini usb wifi dongles. All it requires is usb 1.0/1.1 support.

I would be interested to see.  I got a 900mAh battery on ebay when I had my MPx200, and it did improve battery life.  However, huckfinn has posted that the 1100mAh battery he received didn't improve any over the standart Motorola battery.
*

The only 1200mAh battery I've seen advertised is in German. It's a PolyLi battery to boot!
I wonder if these can be found somewhere else.

One person that tested a 1200mAh battery had very poor results.
They never reported back after having been recommended some tweaks.

I have done some basic testing today.  I charged the battery to 100% prior to it test.  The test I did was playing a looped MP3 using Windows Media Player, with the backlight on and the screen on the whole time, in Flight Mode, using the built-in speaker at half (5) volume, and timed how long it took to get to 75% battery life (I didn't have the time or patience to go all the way to empty).  Here are the results:
The generic extended battery began playing at 12:12.40, and got to 75% at 1:30.55.  It took 1 hour, 17 minuets, and 15 seconds.
The Motorola battery began at 1:59.30, and got to 75% at 3:05.30.  It took 1 hour, and 6 minuets.
The difference was 11 minuets and 15 seconds in favor of the generic battery.  If you use these figures to estimate if I ran it to 0%, it would mean 45 minuets more time out of the generic battery.  Again, this was just a rough test, and I am sure if repeated would yeald different results, but the extended battery would still be on top.

Which was your reference battery? Did you use the 860mHa Motorola battery?

I got a higher mAh battery off ebay when I had my MPx200.  I'm not sure if it was this same one or not, but it did increase my battery life.  I did some timed tests, and it increaded my battery life exactly propotianal to the increased mAh.  I think it was 20% more mAh, and 20% more battery life (or some similar ratio).

It would be nice to know the exact make and model of the battery. If it does in fact increase battery longevity, I'm sure mxp200 owners would be delighted.

How does the battery life compare to the original? How many minutes talk/standby time? Most have heard the aftermarket battteries don't do as well as the original.
It would be nice to know if a better replacement exists.

Isn't installing Magneto a somewhat tricky process?
I've read on other boards that a connection to an internal MS website is needed
to install the ROM, something they did to prevent ROM leakage. Also note that
it requires a ActiveSync 4.0. The final interesting note is a poster claimed it needs an additional memory card to be installed.

It would be cool if the version of the O/S you have didn't require these special tricks.
Anyone know if we can cross post from other sites? I could look up those links
with the discussion.
