From the it's just about time department comes this story from RCR News:

QUOTE
Cingular Wireless L.L.C. plans to shut off both its TDMA and analog networks by 2008, chief executive officer Stan Sigman told attendees during a keynote address earlier this week at the TelecomNext conference.

Cingular spokesman Ritch Blasi noted that about 95 percent of Cingular’s traffic currently is over its GSM network and that the carrier has seen a natural transition of customers from TDMA to GSM since its acquisition of the former AT&T Wireless Services Inc. in 2004.

I think I speak for all of us here at MGN when I say Buh-By. My firm belief is that when they drop off the old technologies which are well past their prime, their focus will be entirely on the new and you will see performance gains from GSM services, wide spread 3G data roll outs, and just better service in general. Just think about it, right now, there are some percentage of Cingular people who have to fix and maintain the old towers, once they are freed up, they can fix GSM, that will equate to better service for us.

PayPal now seems to have PayPal mobile up and running. If you log into your PayPal account and search the help docs for "paypal mobile", you will find all the info on it. When I tried to enable PayPal Mobile on my phone, the link lead me to the home page and no more information was given. Looks like they are close, very close. Here are some of the results of the FAQ search:

What is PayPal mobile and how does it work?

QUOTE
You can use your mobile phone to securely send money and make payments within the U.S. and Canada. To use PayPal mobile, you must activate your mobile phone. Activating your phone requires setting a secure mobile PIN and confirming phone ownership. Activate your phone now.

You can send your payment either through text message to the PayPal mobile short code 729725 (PAYPAL) or by calling the automated voice system at 1-800-4PAYPAL.
Is there a fee to use PayPal mobile?

QUOTE
PayPal does not charge fees to send mobile payments, and PayPal does not charge premium text messaging fees. Your phone carrier may charge you for any text messages or airtime minutes. Please check with your phone carrier to confirm what fees apply for text messages and phone calls.

Premier and Business account holders are charged for receiving payments. See fees for receiving funds.

Wikipedia is an online (unverified) encyclopedia covering a range of topics that is unrivaled and the best part is it is all free. The reason I say unverified above is that this is created by user input and some of the entries are pure garbage. I have grown to find it a must have bookmark and hit it every time a new term pops up I can't figure out. (Just the other day I learned all about SED displays.)

Attached Image

Now, the Wiki monster is mobile so bookmark it on your smartphone immediately. Keep in mind though that this is not a full copy of the main site, I have found several examples where a search came up empty where there are results in the original .org site.

Remember that this will erase all of your data. Everything will be lost (except that in the iPAQ File Store area, that has to be manually deleted).

Press and hold the power button and insert the stylus in the soft reset button hole on the bottom of the device simeltaneously for 5 seconds and release. Simple and quick.

I remember Reydiodj told me one time a guy was returning a PocketPC to Best buy (I think) because it didn't work. He had it stuck on the initial screen where you have to cut and paste an appointment in the initial setup. If you have a PPC device, you know what I mean. It is a nuisance screen in my view but this guy was stuck and could get no further. Read the screen for instructions would be a good start but what ya gonna do?

In this same vein, researchers have determined that HALF of the gadget returns are due to complexity and the lack there of on the users part:

Half of all malfunctioning products returned to stores by consumers are in full working order, but customers can't figure out how to operate the devices, a scientist said on Monday.

Product complaints and returns are often caused by poor design, but companies frequently dismiss them as "nuisance calls", Elke den Ouden found in her thesis at the Technical University of Eindhoven in the south of the Netherlands.

Customer: "I can't seem to connect to the Internet."
Tech Support: "Ah, right. What operating system are you running?"
Customer: "Netscape."
Tech Support: "No, what version of Windows are you using?"
Customer: "Uhhh...Hewlett Packard?"
Tech Support: "No, Right click on 'My Computer,' and select properties on the menu."
Customer: "Your computer? It's my computer!"
Tech Support: "No sir, I mean the little picture called 'My Computer' on your desktop."
Customer: "I don't see an icon called that on my desktop. I do see one called that on my screen."
Tech Support: "Right, just right click that, and choose Properties from the menu."
Customer: "Right click?"
Tech Support: "Just a moment, sir." (mutes phone) "AAAAAAAARGH."

I am using an unlocked 8125 with a blue sim card and accessing the mMode network. It is not a trivial setup but it is very possible. I plan to write up a FAQ on this by the end of the weekend.

MGN Review :: HP iPAQ 6500 case
By Sena Cases
MGN Rating -

If you are looking for a nice case, Sena has the ticket for you. I had the chance to check out the case for the iPAQ 6500 series and one for the Blackberry 8700 C recently. Here is the first review of two, this one for the 6500.

There are several high quality case manufacturers out there. The top three in my book are Sena, Vaja, and Krusell. All three fall at different price points. This is a fine example of a premium case and I love the look.

If you are looking for a nice case, Sena has the ticket for you. I had the chance to check out the case for the iPAQ 6500 series and one for the Blackberry 8700 C recently. Here is the first review of two, this one for the 6500.

The first thing you will notice when you receive a Sena case is the fine packaging. Each and every one comes in a nice looking box and inside the case is in a cloth drawstring bag.

This particular case is the HP iPAQ hw65XX Black-Blue Case with the Ultra Belt Clip. It retails for $50 which is a significant price but it exudes quality.

Attached Image

The general specs are as follows:
Slim Design
Magnetic closure
3 Credit Card Slots
2 SD card slots
ULTRA belt-clip (optional)
1 Multi-purpose pocket
SD card slot and mini SD card slot openings
Headphone jack opening
Camera Opening
Microphone and IR port opening

Once the phone is in place, there are openings for all the buttons and ports you could need to access.

On the back is the mount for the ULTRA belt clip. If you have never had a case with this clip, it is absolutely the best clip of it's type. It is sturdy and locks on your belt rock solid. I have never lost an ULTRA clip off my belt, I can not say that same for most others I have tried.

The cover flap is magnetic and closes nicely. Under normal use, I don't think it will be popping open on you. One thing I would have liked to see but was not present was a way to use the stock plastic screen cover in conjunction with the case. Inside the cover is slots for business or credit cards and a pair of SD cards.

There are several high quality case manufacturers out there. The top three in my book are Sena, Vaja, and Krusell. All three fall at different price points. This is a fine example of a premium case and I love the look. The stitching and quality of the leather is exceptional. Highly recommended.

Visit SenaCases.com for more info on this and other models.
