ok, here goes nothing. phone says it can run java games. i have several on cd from another phone. they have file ext .jar i think. anyway, phone games are .exe extensions. before i just start loading this thing up. any thoughts or experiences??
michael95gt
I've had my x220 since October, and so far the ONLY way I've found to put J2ME games on it is via WAP. So far every Vxxx series games I've tried works great.

God Luck.
thepappydude
man, that is not smart, i mean if it has windows, i should be able to drag em in and fire em up.
McHale
no, but it's exactly what the carriers want. Instead of being able to copy them from another phone, it "encourages" you to download again from their website...

agreed, however, we paid for these phones and games. ergo, we own them and should be able to install them as we see fit. i wonder if there is a way to simply drag em over and drop em. or translate from a .jar to an exe then put em in.
dchester
EXE games (or any .exe program) can be just dragged over when using Active Sync. Also, if you have a CAB file, that can be dragged over and run to install exe files as well. It's the Java ones that are complicated. Basically you have to use IE (with WAP) to download the jad file (not the jar file). This is the only way thus far I've been able to get a java program setup on mine.
McHale
dchester (or anyone who has successfully done it),

do you have to edit the .jad file to point to the location of the .jar file? Or do you just put them online without touching them? Couldn't you create a webpage on your PC and browse it with the phone via ActiveSync so at least you don't have to go online?

Otherwise, if there's any odd steps, how about a quick step-by-step on how you're putting JAVA apps on your phone? I'm dying to put my JAVA-based cell phone unlocking software on my Smartphone so I can say, "Yah, but does your phone do THIS?!?!?" Oh yah, games to. smile.gif

y dont u just upload the java files onto a personal site, connect to the site and download off of that?
thepappydude
ok, one more dumb one. i have a cd full of java games. the file extensions are .jar not .jad. my question is, how can i get these into my phone? i am fairly computer literate but am at a loss.
batha
Could be a stupid one  but can anyone point me to how I can pull the java games off my V600? Save them to....whatever. Should be able to load them onto my 220. And I agree, we paid money for the damn things, should be able to keep them.
dchester
The bottom line (at least so far), if you have a Java program that you want to be able to run on the MPx220, you have to:
1) Make sure there is a jad file, in addition to the jar file. (if not, it won't work)
2) Download the JAD file onto the phone using IE.
(Unfortunately, this means if you have java files on you PC, or elsewhere, you have to get them posted on a web server someplace to be able to install them on the phone, and yes this is ridiculous, but it's the only way I have been successful thus far. The jar file has to be there (on the web server) as well, but you must select the jad file (from IE) to get it to setup on the phone)

I think there are tools out there that can make a jad file from the jar file. I'll have to look around (maybe this weekend) and get back to you.

As a test, I would recommend going to the site: http://midlet.org/index2.jsp
(it has free Java Programs)
Use that site and download a jad file from there, just to be sure you can do it. If you want, take a look at the site with your PC first (just to get familiar with it), but in the end you will need to use your phone to connect to the site using IE (on the phone), and then select a jad file on that site (midlet.org).

IE will launch the Java Setup program and you will get a few dialog boxes prompting you whether you want to install it or not.

Here is one I loaded that runs on my phone "WebGate Chess" at this URL:
http://midlet.org/repository/webgate/wgche...ess/wgchess.jad

Or you can go to the web page it is on and scroll down a ways to find it, as there are several on that page.

Hope this helps.

I put a couple jad/jar files on my website. When I clicked on either file, it opens them like a text file. So... didn't work for me.

www.uti.com/~mjlarsen/index.html

give it a try and let me know if you can make it work.

OK, here's what I was able to determine. Your web server is returning the wrong mime type for those files, which is why they are displaying as text. The correct mime type for a jad file should be "text/vnd.sun.j2me.app-descriptor", but your web server is returning "text/plain". BTW, a jar file should return "application/java-archive" as the mime type. Even if you don't understnd this stuff, whoever runs your web server should, and it is easy for them to fix.

Hope this helps

I was able to download some simple games that I had setup for my T720 into my SMT5600... Minesweeper and Dots.

http://wap.tnet.com/files/java

If I knew where other games were, I could put them on that site as well.

how do i take screen shots of my phone i have some good ones

yup. it does! Thanks. I'll call 'em tomorrow and see what I can do. They tend to have pretty poor support. sad.gif

OK guys this is the deal. I have about 28 MB of Java apps that I am reasonably sure can be loaded onto our MPx220s. I used most if not all of them on my v600 in the past. The problem is that I do not have the the time to generate jad files and create the linked homepage for all the apps. Not to mention, I do not have the bandwidth to distribute them to everyone. If someone can receive a large attachment, and can set up and host the files for us I will gladly share. Let me know if anyone wants too make this happen.
thepappydude
i have downloaded some compilers to go from jar to exe to run under windows. i will keep you posted on results. i have cd's full of jar and jad files of games to try. if this works, screw the posting, we could just compile and load them onto phone as it should be.
krelvinaz
I received a large number of java apps from aadadams. I've already tried a couple of them and one thing that might be a problem is the platform (mine is a SMT5600) is apparently faster than the platform these were made for.

My first try was a frogger like game called CrossRoad... I also tried seahunter. Both apps run find, but way too fast to actually play. I need to see what can be done to slow them up.

He also dumped a large number of wallpaper files (all jpg). I will be moving those and the apps as I can into my current wap site.

I'm going to have to reorg the site a bit to handle the amount of files... but should have it complete in a day or two.

dchester,

would you mind checking my site again? They say they've fixed it (man that's a thread all by itself) and double checked it. But when I click on the .jad file, it still comes down as a text file.

Thanks...

I checked and it has been corrected. I was able to load it (CyberBOG) onto my phone. If the jad file is still showing up as just text in IE on your phone, then press the menu bar and then select "Refresh". (The phone is running IE, so sometimes things get cached, and in this case, that's not so good).

One more note, for whatever reason, the first time that I tried to load it, the JVM (Games and Apps) didn't run properly and the Java app didn't get setup. I went into the task manager and killed the JVM (jeodek.exe), along with IE. The second time I tried, it setup properly.

BTW, what does this CyberBOG Java Calc do?
McHale
Cyberbog Java Calc is a java-based program to calculate the unlock codes for every phone type (except Motorola). I always love having a phone unlocker on my phones because people seem to ask me a lot if I can unlock their phone. Does all the Nokia phones (which I seem to do a lot of).

The other java prog is the best version of Yeti Sports I've played on a cell phone. I highly suggest it!

Thanks again. I forgot to refresh it (not sure what I was thinking... I'm used to Microsoft's IE now). SWEET!!!

-Mc
Slacker
How about a Motorola unlock tool in Java :shocked!:
McHale
You would think with how much knowledge that we've gained with Motorola phones over the years, this would be a piece of cake. Have you seen what some are doing with seem edits? Jebus!

one last try. if i have the jad and jar file. can i put them on the phone directly? i see billards and skipping stones on my phone. i don't see where they are but they are jad files. if i can just get these files on my phone i think they will work.
