Over 16.7 million “smart mobile devices” (including smartphones and other handhelds) were sold in the first quarter of 2006, a 55% increase over the same period last year.

The Asia-Pacific region was the biggest contributor to this growth, accounting for 46% of all sales. Europe, Middle East and Africa (EMEA), meanwhile was responsible for 39% of the total, while the Americas accounted for 15%. The world’s top mobile phone maker kept a comfortable lead worldwide, especially in the EMEA region, where it increased its market share to 76%, from 67% a year ago. This is largely due to the success of its multimedia handsets, including the N70.

RIM managed to snatch the #2 worldwide market position, due to strong sales of its BlackBerry wireless email devices. This was enough to eclipse Palm for the first time, in both North America and the world as a whole. Qtek achieved the highest growth out of the top five manufacturers, with a 211% increase in sales. This was enough to outdo Palm and HP, and become the leading maker of Windows Mobile devices in the EMEA market.
