CHIANG RAI, Thailand -- We had been climbing steadily for nearly two hours in the rugged hill country somewhere between this northern Thai city and the border with Myanmar. We crossed washed-out roads and even had to walk because the grade was too steep for the truck. Finally, hot and sweaty, we came to a tiny village of about 60 Akha tribespeople.

After exchanging greetings, I was invited out of the sun and into a bamboo and grass-roofed shelter by tribal elders and given a cup of hot tea. Then, a buzzing noise suddenly was heard. Surprise showed on the face of the village chief as he identified the source of the noise, which was clipped to my belt.

It was my BlackBerry.
