Verizon Treo 700w Push - Pulled
Well, just 5 days after the Palm Treo 700w Updater 1.10 for Verizon Wireless was made available, now it seems to have been pulled from the website...

Temporarily unavailable.
We anticipate that the Treo 700w updater will be available at a later date. If you have already
installed the updater, please disregard this message.

What's the story? This case of now-you-see-it-now-you-don't is a little disturbing, and only a few days before a webinar specifically covering Treo 700w Direct Push E-Mail on Verizon on Wednesday, April 26th. What's vexing is this update seems to have worked very well, going by the accounts one can read about. Read on to find out what's happened!!

I'm pretty sure the issue was with the installer itself. Many weren't able to get it to work, and even I was slightly confused when I first tried to run it. The setup.exe file would error out, and I had to run a different file in the installer folder to get it working. I believe their working on a better installer method so they don't get so many support calls.

Searching across the web, I came across this on the C|NET site.

"After posting the 700w update, Palm received feedback on an issue that appears to be affecting a small percentage of 700w customers running the update. Some decompression software applications may be having difficulty decompressing the .zip file downloaded from the website and, as a result, the installation process will not start. Palm is looking into adjusting the updater, as well as reviewing customer feedback on the installer. Palm and Verizon Wireless are committed to customer satisfaction and are working together to provide this update to our customers as quickly as possible."

"The Palm representative also said he didn't have a confirmed date or time as to when the update would be reposted but he suspects it will be early this week. "

Well, at least now we know why the Updater has been pulled. The good news is when it returns, it will be easier to use. Let's just focus on the good news. biggrin.gif

Well, I managed to install it on a layover in an airport, so it isn't necessarily a difficult update. But your average user could have problems. At least the update does address a lot of the problems the 700w originally had.

I've installed this update on a half dozen phones.
The update has gone smoothly, but I didn't really follow the instructions.

The instructions say to manually delete all the temp files that are left around after the upgrade.
Personally, after the upgrade I do a hard reset and re-sync with my OTA Exchange server.

Seriously, the biggest reason that people are installing this upgrade is for the MSFP, which means that they have an Exchange ActiveSync server.
Wiping the phone simply means that we have to re-sync the email and re-pair the bluetooth.

All of my customers who have received this upgrade think that it makes the phone faster (although I'm sure it's got more to do with the hard reset than anything else.)
All my customers love the push email.

Oh, it definitely makes it faster. I didn't do a hard reset because reinstalling for me is a 2-3 hour affair. Resetting up my Exchange server is the least of things I do to my device. Even without the hard reset I noticed a decent speed increase.

Hey smeg, before you hard reset can I try a remote wipe on your device?

Funny you mention that. I just did a hard reset, but haven't started setting it back up yet. Go ahead and try the remote wipe now and see if it works.

I did the upgrade tonight. Went smooth.

Ended up with more memory available and the phone appears to be faster.

I am also using two utils which were helping a bit before.

MagicButton
http://www.freewareppc.com/utilities/magicbutton.shtml

Changes the X at the top of the screen to make the app close instead.

Space Reclaimer
http://www.valksoft.com/SpaceReclaimer.html

Found that I had tons of files in \windows\temp even after only a couple days of use. This removes them (they are all 0 bytes in length).

I've never done a hard reset on this device yet.

I didn't setup the wireless sync so I'm not sure yet what settings I need to know so that if I do a hard reset I can restore the connection.

The software indicates your device was wiped. So what happened?

Well, it wasn't exactly the device got wiped and I was able to restore from Sprite like I though. The next time my device tried to sync (I have push enabled) I got a message saying "Exchange Server must enforce security policies on your device to continue synchronizing. Do you want to continue?" Selecting OK reset the device to the Palm screen, and it wouldn't boot past that. I tried hard resettings, and got the press up message to hard reset. Hard resetting didn't boot my device. Finally in desperation to get my phone to boot again, I pressed both soft keys at the same time and the hard reset went through.

After the hard reset finished I restored from the Sprite Backup that I created. But now every time I try to sync I'm getting the "enforce security policies" message, so I'm unable to sync with the server right now. Is there a way on your end to stop getting that message so I can get the server working again?

So I guess it's nice that you can stop someone from getting access if you loose your device, but it looks like they are required to choose the OK message. Canceling it makes it so they can't get your current server info, but everything else on the device appears to still be fully accessible.

Looks to me like remote wipe isn't ready for prime time if you have to approve it. Sheesh Microsoft, are you serious?

Yeah, kind of defeats the point. If the thief had any knowledge of the device they could still access everything except your new Exchange items.

I would like to have the option of causing the device to self-destruct so that it would never work again. Maybe even explosively biggrin.gif

Looks like the updater is back online for those that didn't grab it the first time around. Get it here.
