Gizmodo is citing a Personal Computing World article that speculates Apple may be looking at Palm.

Rumors are running rampant lately and today we hear that Apple may be evaluating a Palm purchase. This rumor comes about after two of Palms biggest investors are calling for the company to be sold.

There are a few connections that link Palm and Apple—some more concrete than others. They are located close to each other, some of the early Palm employees are previous Apple employees and Jobs has already taken a stab at buying the company back in the 90s. Treo Newton 800p nanoite? Let’s hope it would be better than Motorola and Apple’s phone offspring.

That would have some interesting implications if it actually happened. The 700w could be the only Windows powered Palm ever. Even now there is still a large following of the Apple Newton PDA, so I'm sure it could quickly find it's niche market.

It would get Apple into a market they HAVE to be in to stay a "player." iPods are great, but all the iPods sold EVER do not add up to four months worth of mobile phone sales from Nokia.

They could be kicking the tires getting a sense of the Palm organization and structure, but Apple have the talent and imagination to create a purely internally developed mobile PDA/phone that would be very capable. My guess is the critical issue for Apple will be to see if the Treo design run an Apple Mobile OS? Because for Apple, getting their OS into a mobile platform will be imperative.
