*UPDATE*

I read during the review of the Orange c600 that the phone is quicker if you turn off 'error reporting'

I have just turned it off, but haven't had time to see whether it makes a difference.

Anyone else tried?

Yeah I tried a viking 512MB SD Card first and it didn't want to know. Its strange really given the fact a 1gig card works so its not a problem with the size of teh cards.

I would also like to update that so far the battery is holding out very well especially since I have been playing with the OS a lot.

The old MPX200 must have the most revisions of a smartphone OS released compared to any other phone.

I'm really surprised MS didn't test WM5 on the MPX220 given the fact the hardware was more potent and it has both bluetooth and a camera.

I also went with good old darky's offer, so I thought I would put my ten cents into the fold.

I am using a 256mb SD card, and its sluggish at times, but overall pretty good. I have to say my MPX200 has always been a bit hesitent at time regardless of what OS is on. I'm not sure how fast the MPX200's SD card slot reads or how fast my SD card is so like everyone else I can't comment on using a better one. Mine is a proper SD card though not MMC.

I really like the new UI, I also love the new txt message system that brings up a list of words, as below:

It works great with ActiveSync 4.1 but is slow to synchronise. Now its the first time I have sync'd with an exchange server rather than the local computer so it might be that rather than the phone.

I'm using a WMA file as my ringtone, and don't have any cut out problems with that.

I have sent some txt's and made a couple of phone calls. Everything is working ok, and as yet the phone has not crashed.

It takes a while to startup and shutdown, but once again the SD card might come into that.

All in all I think this runs better than both WM2002/2003 and there are definitley less bugs than 2003, the most welcome thing being the battery life seems better.

I think this is a big F you to the manufacturers who won't offer WM5 upgrades claiming hardware issues. If one of the oldest smartphones there is can run it, i'm sure devices less than a year old will manage.

I have been finding it quite interesting developing apps for the .net framework.

I had done some stuff with my pocket pc, but the unique interface for a smart phone e.g no pointing device makes it harder than it looks.

The only problem I have with the smartphone .net framework is there is no sql ce support built in which would be helpful especially for enterprise apps.

you can use wma files as ringtones in wm2003, and you can put them anywhere. Much easier than all the wav conversion required in 2002.

yep phone is faster, battery seems to have a longer stand by. MMS isn't installed as default, I never used it so I haven't tried to install the 2002 version that came on the CD.

My SIM manager works fine, but I know some T-Mobile people are having problems

the first pic is of cartman, doesn't really bother me, its only on 2 seconds.

Font uses microsft's debateable cleartype technology, can be disabled, personally I like it.

Most of the 2002 apps don't owrk, but most apps have a 2003 version these days.

my MSN messenger seems to not sign in, even though my gprs connection allows me to surf the web fine. IE is loads better.

What about phones like the E200? does that not have a seperate mms client like the mpx200 2002 did. I had a look in the readme that came with the mms client on the motorola CD, but the company who created it don't seem to deal with the public directly with this software

Surely signal strength is down to hardware. I don't see how changing the software can make it better or worse, mine certianly hasn't changed.

I can understand how it makes the battery last longer by tweaking the way it runs, but not the signal strength.

you should be able to access them via gprs mate, you just need to know your isp's settings.

Usually if you give them a ring they will send you an sms message that will configure the phone for you

I'm in the UK, on an Orange contract. Updated mine the day the rom came out, and haven't had a single issue.

Phone is faster, battery lasts longer, apps such as the megadrive emulator run faster.

To be fair other than the niggles of the OS itself I never had any problems with the 2002 rom, but the 2003 one is much better. How the mpx200 should have been from the start

I have to say I am finding the 2003 update is just a lot more responsive than the 2002 one. It acts more like a phone rather than a PC. typing a text message using t9 for instance doesn't result in missing letters or mis s spelt words.

It boots up quicker, the whole think acts like the mpx200 should have been from the start

I can confirm this works!!

I have UK Ornage MPX200, installed the rom following the instructions that came with the rom. After that I did the hard reset, and boom we were sorted.

Did the reg hack, and it was in English.

It takes a while to come on after the rom install, but after that it boots up faster than 2002. Phone is definately more responsive.

Doesn't appear to come with MMS installed, and I haven't tried it off the moto CD.

In terms of operation so far so good.

Wow nice one!

Totally excellent work, can't believe its finally out.

Every German speaking mpx200 user should feel privelaged.

An English version would certianly be appreciated

I contacted this guy, and he think he will be getting them back in stock but didn't say when.

By the way don't buy one of those dummy phones. I got one off ebay for 99p just to see what the crack is, and not one bit of plastic on it is anywhere near the quality of a proper phone. Its just a basic representation of the look and weight.

I would pay $40 to get a CD from motorola, and have some support/warranty, but there is no way i'm paying some guy for a copy that isn't even legal and I have to ship my phone to.

Totally appreciate that he has the market to himself, and nice one on that front, but $40 is taking the michael a bit

yeah the trouble is he is attracting a lot of attention with this service, and it didn't take Motorola long to have the MPX auction pulled a few days ago even though it was genuine.

Given the fact no company is willing to release the update officially they probably wouldn't be best pleased to find someone flogging copies on the net.

Personally I would just wait, he isn't even offering it outside the states, so thats a good portion of us out the race before its even started.

This image will become available on the net sometime or other. The MPX200 has become really popular lately so somebody is bound to know somebody who knows somebody.

I'm actually surprised it has taken this long, there must not be many of the hardcore pirating faternity with mpx200's

I have to say if you find ActiveSync complicated you might want to sell all your gear and get a notepad and pen.

Unfortunately I can't see the guy on ebay wanting to give it out if he is making good money from it. He could buy used mpx200's off ebay knowing he can make a tidy profit on them.

I know a few people don't think the mpx200 is a particulalry good mp3 player, but I think its pretty good. The set of head phones orange provide with their deal are quite a flash affair, and are stereo.

However I usually just stick a selection on, plonk the phone on the window sil when i' m the bath and listen through the main speaker. The main speaker isn't bad, and sounds like a small radio, but I was wondering if anyone knows of any portable speakers that use the same jack as on the mpx200? Just to improve it a bit.

My brother bought the same phone after he saw mine, and I will often find him cooking his tea in the kitchen while listening to some MP3's simply through the main speaker on the old MPX.

I even use mine down the gym.

Doubt its got much to do with the headset, more likely the signal the phone itself outputs.

All you should need is a graphic equalizer type app for the phone

Not sure what you mean by candy phone, but this has been available for a while in the UK, and its a camera phone, but uses a tweaked version of the OS ued in the likes of the v66 etc. Probably similar to your v60
