Sean,

I appologize. I ranted for no reason. I'm sure the moderators are just trying to be helpful.

I haven't had much luck with BT on the SX66. I'm using a moto850 headset, and unless I hold the phone right next to the headset, the phone calls are very staticy. I just got the SX66, and it looks like it came with the latest firmware from Siemens. Maybe there are better BT headsets, or at least headsets that are more compatible with the SX66?

Smeg, great points in your post.  I have the PDA2k (SX66 w/Camera-rarely used function) and I really like the Blue tooth and wifi. Sure some programs including good ones like Sprite will give you a display warning but I have not had any PPC programs that does not work.  I don't know if the SX66 comes with an Intellidialer function but it is really a nice add and you can get it at XDA Forums just search Intellidialer.  The one thing I use the least is the slide out keyboard. If the JAM had Wifi I would probably switch to it.

I just recently upgraded (?) my home computer to a 64bit setup in both Linux-64bit and WinxXP 64. It is the same thing. A few hassles here and there like having to use ActiveSync4 to use explorer on your PPC but there is also some fun in playing around to make stuff work. The SX66 is the state of art PPC, welcome to the leading edge.

I really don't understand these types of replies. This topic has nothing to do with someone upgrading their PC to a different operating system. It also doesn't have anything to do with getting use to the minor differences between phones.

I was very excited to be getting a PDA phone that has bluetooth. However, the bluethooth functionality of the Blue Angel (a.k.a SX66, and others) sucks. So, now I can't use it. I was also very excited about having a new phone with the latest features. However, the SX66 is a step backwards.

When I talk about the differences between the SX66 and the PPC4100, it's because people need to be aware that there are features on the PPC4100 that are better than the SX66. Don't reply and talk down to me about getting use to the differences between phones. If people are investing money in these phones because it's trendy or they're techno-junkies, that has nothing to do with expecting more from new technology. Do people just keep buying these phones to impress people by having something new? Or, is there a real need to get a different phone? From the moderator responses to my topic, I would say it's just to be cool to have something new and ensure their moderator status.

My PPC4100 lacked features I thought the SX66 would improve upon. However, I'm finding out that this is not the case. There are many choices out there and people need to be aware of what they are buying. The moderators on this site are less than qualified to lend a hand in answering or providing assistance in these matters. I could get better help at Radio Shack.

I've written applications for both the PPC and Smartphone platforms, including creating an essential dll for the eVB hack created by John Cody. I've also followed this site from the day it was created. I've gotten very dissapointed in what I'm now seeing. Sean, I don't know if you're still active in these forums or this site, but please, take a look at what's going on here. There's no point in having forums that don't address the needs of the users. Maybe I should be a moderator? My mom has a cell phone, maybe she should be a moderator? If someone upgrades their phone, she could compare it to the recent remodel on her house and how she has to get use to the fridge opening on the right versus opening on the left like the old one.

I'm done.

I signed up for the unlimited MediaNet plan on Cingular. I've found out that it's limited to 8Mb and not truely unlimited. I noticed they have another plan called unlimited PDA Data. The unlimited PDA data is more expensive, but maybe it's really an Internet connection. I noticed that the main difference between the two plans is the access point. The MediaNet plan accesses the Internet though a WAP access point, while the data plan accesses the Internet through Cingular's ISP access point.

Is there really a difference between these two plans? I can browse the Internet on the MediaNet plan the PIE, and I can check email through pOutlook. The only difference I've been seen is being able to use the SX66 as a modem (tethering), which would require the data plan.

Any thoughts on these plans?

Cingular better not be sending me a bill for accessing non WAP sites on the MediaNet plan...

I just got an SX66. I've already noticed dissapointing differences between the SX66 and my old PPC4100.

Here are some of the differences I've noticed:

PPC4100 was able to record phone conversations, but the SX66 does not (although it can pick up conversations when using the speakerphone).

PPC4100 would ring with the headset connected (option in the phone application), but the SX66 does not have this option, and once the headset is connected, the phone will only ring through the headset.

Applications that worked fine on the PPC4100 do not work on the SX66. In addition, every application I've installed has given me a warning message about the application not having been written for the SX66 operating system, and that it may not display correctly.

These are just the differences I can think of at the moment. However, they are all very important to me.

Obviously, from looking at the version of the OS listed in the About screen for the devices, they are running different operating systems (or at least builds). Either way, it's very frustrating to take a step backwards when the differences make the older PPC4100 seem like better device, despite the fact that it doesn't have BT, WiFi, directional pad, or a keyboard. These differences should be standardized because you won't see this kind of detail listed in brochures. You'll have to buy these phones/PDAs and find out the hard way like I have.

Sorry to enter this topic so late.

I talked to Audiovox tech support (UTStartcom), and they said that the release notes related to the firmware upgrade only indicated two changes to the firmware. The first change was to sharpen pictures displayed on the PPC4100. Apparently, the device had a blurry problem with pictures. Although, I've never noticed a problem.

The second change was to increase available memory. I'm not sure if this meant storage space or run-time memory.

That's all they information the tech rep had to offer. So, basically, it doesn't sound like anything was fixed that would prompt upgrading the firmware. For those not experiencing any problems on their PPC4100, it doesn't sound like it's worth upgrading the firmware.

What you are talking about is a feature not a problem.  One of the things new in 2003 is an "always on GPRS connection" that once you connect, will keep you connected unless you do something to manually disconnect (like hooking to your PC).  This does not effect battery life in any way that I have found, it just stops you from taking the time to connect every time you want to check email.  You will see that you can still get calls even when connected.  Feature, not a problem.

Sean,

Does always-on GPRS connection use data or does it just idle until used? I'm concerned about the data billing aspect.

Thanks,

After upgrading to the WM2003 OS, I configured an Internet POP3 email account on the phone. I noticed that when the phone checks the email account automatically or when I do a send and receive, the phone never disconnects. I've tried to change the idle disconnect setting in the options for data connections, but it hasn't helped.

I was wondering if anyone else has experienced this problem. And, if the radio stack update has any impact on the problem?

If anyone is planning on doing the WM2003 upgrade, you might want to back up all of the ringtones in the Windows folder.

Could someone that is still running the WM2002 OS on their AT&T MPX200 please zip up and post the phone's ringtones. I got used to a few of the ringtones, and now that I've upgraded to the WM2003 OS, I'm not very happy with the included ringtones.

Thanks,

I've noticed there are a couple of other registry settings listed under the GDI. Does anyone know what the qt or wt keys do? Removing or renaming the /HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/System/GDI/ClearType does remove cleartype from the homescreen. However, like pookiguy has stated, it doesn't remove the cleartype from menus, etc. If someone can take a look at the GDI registry keys on a WM2002 MPX200, maybe we will see a difference and can take it from there.

I went ahead and changed the keys in the registry. It worked. Here's the changes:

Rename the following key "/HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/System/GDI/ClearType" to somthing else (e.g., "/HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/System/GDI/cClearTypec").

Change the following values:

"/HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/System/GDI/SYSFNT/Qt" = 2 (default = 5)
"/HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/System/GDI/SYSFNT/Wt" = 50 (default = 400)

Power the phone off and then on for the changes to take affect.

It looks great on my MPX200.
