Well I dropped my HTC 8X (Verizon) and broke the screen glass . Unlike the iPhone (I use on Sprint) the 8X is not an easy repair. I called my local phone repair guy (that replaced both sides of my iPhone) and he said he will not work on the HTC 8X. Apparently they glue the glass in and there is no great fix back to original, at least by the repair guys. I like my SurfacePro Windows8 machine but the 8X is now retired.

I have been using the first generation iPad (sim version) for the last several years and finally have decided to go back to a Microsoft for a test. The iPad is okay but Safari sucks as far as I am concerned and I really can't think of an Apple App I can't live without. Once I get the machine I will update with first impresssion and thoughts on the Surface. It has been awhile since I have tried a new machine out.

Larry Greenberg wrote a good piece on the topic "Is Advertising Ruining the Internet" back in May 2011. I don't want to be a hypocrite as we take some Google advertisement that pays the hosting cost of MGN every month. But, over the last year the advertising on many websites seems obnoxious. Where is the modern version of Proxomitron that helps you filter the garbage on other devices like iPad, Android etc. I was showing something to someone on my iPad and some ad scrolled across the view. They said "how do you get rid of that?" I didn't know. I want information, I could care less about the advertisement. We all pay a hefty fee for internet access, is there a way we can get information without the loss of privacy and the intrusion into to our personal lives. Is there an Internet wwX that is not so commercial?

Untethered Jailbreak for iPhone 4S & iPad 2 worked great on my iPhone 4S. Thanks to all the members of the IOS Super Hacking "Dream Team". Just follow the readme instructions and it should go without a hitch. I ran the jailbreak software on a Win7 64 bit machine. Make a donation to the team for all their hard work if you can muster the bucks. Enjoy

Get the break here: http://greenpois0n.com/

I took the plunge and did the iPhone 4S OTA update. It seems to work fine. My phone actually lasted all night without discharging. It appears the update helps battery life - at least for my 4S. Be sure to be connected to WiFi. The update takes just a few minutes. Good Luck

No, I have learned my lesson on updating to soon after a new release. Yes, the phone sucks the juice but will last for 7 hours resting on a full charge. Besides, I am waiting for a jailbreak.

It has been almost two years with my Sprint EVO and it still does all I need it to do. I recently stared Skyping again and the video calling works very well. I was out in the middle of nowhere Wyoming last week and with 3G coverage and had a good video call experience with a friend. So far the Android OS is proving robust. The only thing that has happened with the phone was the need for a screen replacement (maybe my fault) about 6 months ago. I took the EVO to a Sprint service center and they replaced it while I waited.

Digitimes: Nokia has launched its first Symbian Anna-based smartphone, the X7, in the Taiwan market with a suggested retail price of NT$15,800 (US$547). The X7 comes with a 4-inch touchscreen and an 8-megapixel full-size focus camera, and supports multiple social community networks, according to company data. Nokia will continue to launch Symbian-based smartphones, with shipments to total over 150 million units in the next few years, according to Michael Hsu, general manager of Nokia Taiwan. Nokia's plan to launch its first Windows Phone 7-based smartphone before the end of 2011 remains unchanged, Hsu stated.

Nokia is also cooperating with Microsoft to assist software developers in Taiwan to develop applications based on Symbian and Windows Phone 7, said Hsu, indicating the next 3-5 months will be a crucial period for the establishment of the Symbina-Windows Phone 7 ecosystem.

The world gets more ridiculous all the time. Newsfactor: Electronic cigarette fans will be able to find each other with a networked e-cigarette from Blu Cig. Not quite how Angelina Jolie and Johnny Depp met, but a vibration will let Blu Cig users know they're nearby. Then maybe the networked e-cigarette users will be able to relate -- or maybe not. Blu Cig says the feature was driven by customer feedback.

The Germans are buying the New York Stock Exchange but sell poor little T-mobile? I guess they know were the real money is these days.

AT&T Inc. (NYSE: T) and Deutsche Telekom AG (FWB: DTE) today announced that they have entered into a definitive agreement under which AT&T will acquire T-Mobile USA from Deutsche Telekom in a cash-and-stock transaction currently valued at approximately $39 billion. The agreement has been approved by the Boards of Directors of both companies.

AT&T’s acquisition of T-Mobile USA provides an optimal combination of network assets to add capacity sooner than any alternative, and it provides an opportunity to improve network quality in the near term for both companies’ customers. In addition, it provides a fast, efficient and certain solution to the impending exhaustion of wireless spectrum in some markets, which limits both companies’ ability to meet the ongoing explosive demand for mobile broadband.

With this transaction, AT&T commits to a significant expansion of robust 4G LTE (Long Term Evolution) deployment to 95 percent of the U.S. population to reach an additional 46.5 million Americans beyond current plans – including rural communities and small towns. This helps achieve the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) and President Obama’s goals to connect “every part of America to the digital age.” T-Mobile USA does not have a clear path to delivering LTE.

“This transaction represents a major commitment to strengthen and expand critical infrastructure for our nation’s future,” said Randall Stephenson, AT&T Chairman and CEO. “It will improve network quality, and it will bring advanced LTE capabilities to more than 294 million people. Mobile broadband networks drive economic opportunity everywhere, and they enable the expanding high-tech ecosystem that includes device makers, cloud and content providers, app developers, customers, and more. During the past few years, America’s high-tech industry has delivered innovation at unprecedented speed, and this combination will accelerate its continued growth.”

Stephenson continued, “This transaction delivers significant customer, shareowner and public benefits that are available at this level only from the combination of these two companies with complementary network technologies, spectrum positions and operations. We are confident in our ability to execute a seamless integration, and with additional spectrum and network capabilities, we can better meet our customers’ current demands, build for the future and help achieve the President’s goals for a high-speed, wirelessly connected America.”

Deutsche Telekom Chairman and CEO René Obermann said, “After evaluating strategic options for T-Mobile USA, I am confident that AT&T is the best partner for our customers, shareholders and the mobile broadband ecosystem. Our common network technology makes this a logical combination and provides an efficient path to gaining the spectrum and network assets needed to provide T-Mobile customers with 4G LTE and the best devices. Also, the transaction returns significant value to Deutsche Telekom shareholders and allows us to retain exposure to the U.S. market.”

As part of the transaction, Deutsche Telekom will receive an equity stake in AT&T that, based on the terms of the agreement, would give Deutsche Telekom an ownership interest in AT&T of approximately 8 percent. A Deutsche Telekom representative will join the AT&T Board of Directors.

Competition and Pricing

The U.S. wireless industry is one of the most fiercely competitive markets in the world and will remain so after this deal. The U.S. is one of the few countries in the world where a large majority of consumers can choose from five or more wireless providers in their local market. For example, in 18 of the top 20 U.S. local markets, there are five or more providers. Local market competition is escalating among larger carriers, low-cost carriers and several regional wireless players with nationwide service plans. This intense competition is only increasing with the build-out of new 4G networks and the emergence of new market entrants.

The competitiveness of the market has directly benefited consumers. A 2010 report from the U.S. General Accounting Office (GAO) states the overall average price (adjusted for inflation) for wireless services declined 50 percent from 1999 to 2009, during a period which saw five major wireless mergers.

Addresses wireless spectrum challenges facing AT&T, T-Mobile USA, their customers, and U.S. policymakers

This transaction quickly provides the spectrum and network efficiencies necessary for AT&T to address impending spectrum exhaust in key markets driven by the exponential growth in mobile broadband traffic on its network. AT&T’s mobile data traffic grew 8,000 percent over the past four years and by 2015 it is expected to be eight to 10 times what it was in 2010. Put another way, all of the mobile traffic volume AT&T carried during 2010 is estimated to be carried in just the first six to seven weeks of 2015. Because AT&T has led the U.S. in smartphones, tablets and e-readers – and as a result, mobile broadband – it requires additional spectrum before new spectrum will become available. In the long term, the entire industry will need additional spectrum to address the explosive growth in demand for mobile broadband.

Improves service quality for U.S. wireless customers

AT&T and T-Mobile USA customers will see service improvements - including improved voice quality - as a result of additional spectrum, increased cell tower density and broader network infrastructure. At closing, AT&T will immediately gain cell sites equivalent to what would have taken on average five years to build without the transaction, and double that in some markets. The combination will increase AT&T’s network density by approximately 30 percent in some of its most populated areas, while avoiding the need to construct additional cell towers. This transaction will increase spectrum efficiency to increase capacity and output, which not only improves service, but is also the best way to ensure competitive prices and services in a market where demand is extremely high and spectrum is in short supply.

Expands 4G LTE deployment to 95 percent of U.S. population – urban and rural areas

This transaction will directly benefit an additional 46.5 million Americans – equivalent to the combined populations of the states of New York and Texas – who will, as a result of this combination, have access to AT&T’s latest 4G LTE technology. In terms of area covered, the transaction enables 4G LTE deployment to an additional 1.2 million square miles, equivalent to 4.5 times the size of the state of Texas. Rural and smaller communities will substantially benefit from the expansion of 4G LTE deployment, increasing the competitiveness of the businesses and entrepreneurs in these areas.

Increases AT&T’s investment in the U.S.

The acquisition will increase AT&T’s infrastructure investment in the U.S. by more than $8 billion over seven years. Expansion of AT&T’s 4G LTE network is an important foundation for the next wave of innovation and growth in mobile broadband, ensuring the U.S. continues to lead the world in wireless technology and availability. It makes T-Mobile USA, currently a German-owned U.S. telecom network, part of a U.S.-based company.

An impressive, combined workforce

Bringing AT&T and T-Mobile USA together will create an impressive workforce that is best positioned to compete in today’s global economy. Post-closing, AT&T intends to tap into the significant knowledge and expertise held by employees of both AT&T and T-Mobile USA to succeed. AT&T is the only major U.S. wireless company with a union workforce, offering leading wages, benefits, training and development for employees. The combined company will continue to have a strong employee and operations base in the Seattle area.

Consistent with AT&T’s track record of value-enhancing acquisitions

AT&T has a strong track record of executing value-enhancing acquisitions and expects to create substantial value for shareholders through large, straightforward synergies with a run rate of more than $3 billion, three years after closing onward (excluding integration costs). The value of the synergies is expected to exceed the purchase price of $39 billion. Revenue synergies come from opportunities to increase smartphone penetration and data average revenue per user, with cost savings coming from network efficiencies, subscriber and support savings, reduced churn and avoided capital and spectrum expenditures.

The transaction will enhance margin potential and improve the company’s long-term revenue growth potential as it benefits from a more robust mobile broadband platform for new services.

Additional financial information

The $39 billion purchase price will include a cash payment of $25 billion with the balance to be paid using AT&T common stock, subject to adjustment. AT&T has the right to increase the cash portion of the purchase price by up to $4.2 billion with a corresponding reduction in the stock component, so long as Deutsche Telekom receives at least a 5 percent equity ownership interest in AT&T.

The number of AT&T shares issued will be based on the AT&T share price during the 30-day period prior to closing, subject to a 7.5 percent collar; there is a one-year lock-up period during which Deutsche Telekom cannot sell shares.

The cash portion of the purchase price will be financed with new debt and cash on AT&T’s balance sheet. AT&T has an 18-month commitment for a one-year unsecured bridge term facility underwritten by J.P. Morgan for $20 billion. AT&T assumes no debt from T-Mobile USA or Deutsche Telekom and continues to have a strong balance sheet.

The transaction is expected to be earnings (excluding non-cash amortization and integration costs) accretive in the third year after closing. Pro-forma for 2010, this transaction increases AT&T’s total wireless revenues from $58.5 billion to nearly $80 billion, and increases the percentage of AT&T’s total revenues from wireless, wireline data and managed services to approximately 80 percent.

This transaction will allow for sufficient cash flow to support AT&T’s dividend. AT&T has increased its dividend for 27 consecutive years, a matter decided by AT&T’s Board of Directors.

Conditions

The acquisition is subject to regulatory approvals, a reverse breakup fee in certain circumstances, and other customary regulatory and other closing conditions. The transaction is expected to close in approximately 12 months.

Advisors

Greenhill & Co., J.P. Morgan and Evercore Partners acted as financial advisors and Sullivan & Cromwell LLP, Arnold & Porter, and Crowell & Moring provided legal advice to AT&T.

source BBC:Microsoft has revealed that 1 in 10 users who tried to install a software update on their Windows mobile experienced problems. The company had previously said that only a "small number" of handsets were affected.

I guess 1 out of 10 is not a disaster but I would not want to be the 1.

I think Verizon has a great network but I am a bit skeptical that people will jump on a 3G iPhone knowing the the 4G version is coming this summer. Also, there are many good droid options with large screens. The market will decide. Let us know what you think. Take Poll

OK, it’s a few days after New Year’s nearly a month past Hanukkah, and as far as gift-getting is concerned, there’s good news and bad news:

  • Good news: You racked up a whole deck of gift cards.
  • Bad news: You‘re historically incapable of keeping track of gift cards
  • Good news: We have a Smartphone app for that.
SWAGG, a new (free) Smartphone app, lets you input your gift cards (via bar code numbers) so you can use them virtually instead of carrying around a stack of plastic. Through SWAGG, gift cards can either be presented at checkout or used to make online purchases. SWAGG ensures that those cards are not lost, misplaced, forgotten at home or stolen.

In addition, if your gift cards are issued by any of SWAGG’s participating retailers – a growing number that includes JC Penney, Wet Seal, American Apparel, 1-800 Flowers and more -- you can use the app to easily exchange the WhatWasHeThinking card for one from your natural retail habitat. And – perhaps best of all – those cards show you the remaining balance as you redeem them, purchase by purchase.

Research from The National Retail Federation predicted that post-holiday shopping may be up after two years. It predicted that holiday spending, nationally, totaled about $447 billion, which is 2.3 percent more than last year.

Please check out SWAGG’s Home.

BBC reports: Mobile calls and texts made on any GSM network can be eavesdropped upon using four cheap phones and open source software, say security researchers. Karsten Nohl and Sylvain Munaut demonstrated their eavesdropping toolkit at the Chaos Computer Club Congress (CCC) in Berlin. The work builds on earlier research that has found holes in many parts of the most widely used mobile technology.

SYNC® Destinations is a free smartphone app that gives SYNC Traffic, Directions and Information (TDI) users mobile access to search for and save destinations to their cloud-based SYNC Services account for easy access when back in the car
· App includes Predictive Traffic, powered by Ford’s best-in-class traffic information supplier INRIX, providing users with recommended departure time, travel time and ETA based on current and expected traffic conditions along their route
· Free SYNC Destinations app is available today for Apple iPhone, Apple iPad and Android-based devices and can be downloaded through the Apple App Store and Android Market
· SYNC Destinations is available to owners of 2010-2011 SYNC-equipped, TDI-capable vehicles who have a registered and active TDI services account on www.syncmyride.com

Owners of 2010 and 2011 Ford SYNC-equipped vehicles that are Traffic, Directions and Information (TDI)-capable can now download a free smartphone app designed to help get them where they need to go with less hassle.

Ford launched the SYNC Destinations mobile app today for Apple iPhone, Apple iPad and Android-based devices, with BlackBerry smartphones coming soon. Available at no cost, the app gives users of TDI services mobile access to a host of navigation and traffic information specifically designed to make any trip easier.

“SYNC Destinations leverages the power of your smartphone to manage a user’s SYNC Services account and to plan ahead, sending destination locations to your car, and knowing what’s happening on the road ahead of you before you even get behind the wheel,” said Dave Gersabeck, SYNC TDI product manager.

With the SYNC Destinations app, TDI users have an exclusive on-the-go link to their cloud-based SYNC Services account on www.syncmyride.com, where they can add, save and manage “Saved Points” or addresses. A maximum of 25 Saved Points can be accessed through the app. Locations added via SYNC Destinations are immediately accessible through SYNC Services once in the vehicle, with turn-by-turn directions delivered to the car only a few simple voice commands away.

“With SYNC Destinations, you can be standing in line for a coffee, making impromptu plans with a friend or sitting at the ballgame, and conveniently add a new address to your Saved Points – without ever stopping to log into your account at a personal computer,” adds Gersabeck.

With SYNC Destinations, SYNC TDI users can also better plan the when and where of their commutes, accessing real-time traffic information, reliable traffic forecasts and other time-saving features powered by INRIX, a leading provider of traffic information and driver services. Key benefits include:

· Traffic maps with real-time speed, accident and incident information for all highways, interstates, arterials and city streets in 126 metropolitan areas across North America

· Reliable traffic forecasts that predict how travel times are expected to change over time, based on sophisticated analysis of current traffic conditions, day of the week, season, holidays and related days, current and forecast weather, accidents and road construction, as well as other unique local events such as school schedules, sports games and concerts

· Fastest routes based on current and expected traffic conditions as well as recommended departure times, expected travel times and ETAs that make navigating to daily destinations, whether across town or cross-country, easier than ever

· Easy look-up of addresses for new destinations through local business search and address book integration

“SYNC Destinations is an easy-to-use mobile tool that gives busy, on-the-go SYNC users the flexibility to search and save locations for quick access in the car, plus, with features such as predictive traffic, users can take some of the guesswork out of their daily trips by preplanning the best estimated time of departure to get around town quickly and easily,” said Gersabeck.

Also specific to SYNC Destinations is a 5 mph lockout feature, which automatically halts the app from running on a smartphone once it is detected to be traveling in excess of 5 mph, helping drivers stay focused on the task of driving.

Ford, Lincoln and Mercury owners of 2010 and 2011 SYNC-equipped, TDI-capable vehicles can download the SYNC Destinations app for free from the Apple App Store and Android Market. To activate it, the user has to enter his or her www.syncmyride.com login credentials. Once those credentials are submitted, the app confirms the user’s TDI subscription status, and is then unlocked and ready for use.

I have dumped my Asus net-book for the Apple iPad while traveling. The iPad is lighter and the battery is far better versus the net-book. I have been using the App "Desktop" along with the iPad resident VPN APP to log on to my company Windows PC to work on the road. One limitation of the iPad for me is the virtual keyboard to do any serious typing such as with Word or Power Point on my remote machine. I decided to try a wireless keyboard solution and the Rocketfish iPad Keyboard Capsule seemed like a reasonable compromise for my use. First, the set up and pairing is easy. You still need to make touch selection of Apps to run but once you choose an APP including Safari or iCab you can type using the RocketFish keyboard. The Rocketfish works reasonably well with the remote windows connection as well. Overall a decent solution if you want to travel lighter than a net-book to do serious typing work.

Pros: Easy pairing between Rocketfish Keyboard Capsule and iPad, good protection of iPad, keyboard is good with iPad specific shortcuts.

Cons: The Rocketfish capsule allows only limited iPad screen rotation. It needs to allow for further screen rotation backwards for viewing beyond 90 degrees with the iPad in the holder system. An added mouse function would be a great addition. Cost is $99, should be more like $69.

Yes I know the iPad is not a net-book, but with the remote access to your main PC the iPad makes a great travel device, if you can use a real kepboard.
