There is talk of a hack that allows this phone to work on any US GSM carrier but I have yet to see it for my self. You would loose the PTT feature but i know the phone can take more abuse than most phones.

Since Cingular's new PTT is I believe based on the Kodiac system it still has a 5 -7 sec call setup time. The thing that sets Nextel apart from the rest is the 1/2 second or less setup of the call. Verizon has PTT now but it is still slower than Nextel. Readylink from the Sprint side has a 3 second setup. Once SprintNextel goes to EVDO rev a and puts in Q-Chat then you will see Iden go away as SprintNextel moves everybody over. You will see more smartphones available then.

QUOTE (Sarc @ Nov 5 2004, 03:17 PM)
I don't think anything is for certain, but the last I heard was around Feb. '05.
This is the same phone I'm looking forward to getting.
I've got the MPX-200, but GSM service in my area is a joke.
I've left Nextel twice, and both times have regretted it.

QUOTE (broxman @ Feb 26 2005, 09:27 AM)
I purchased a new PPC4100 from AT&T wireless on Jan. 11, 2005 and the date of the ROM in it is Nov. 30, 2004. I see the ROM update that Audiovox has on their website as of Jan. 17. When I start the ROM update (without my PPC in the cradle) it says that the version of the udate is 1.6. Is this an update to my current ROM version. I assume it is since it was released after I purchased my PPC.

Hopefully, it will fix a couple of problems I'm having with the device. Sometimes the audio is not turned on for the phone - can't hear the other person and they can't hear me. A soft reset fixes that. The other problem is that sometimes I get a hard reset when I do a soft reset. Usually, tha's after using Activesync, my San Disk Wi-Fi SD card, or NYDITOT to get landscape mode.

Anybody have any experience or info on what the ROM udpate may fix. My phone is currently locked to AT&T so that's not going to be a problem or change for me.

Since AT&T became Cingular late last year my guess would be that your unit was old stock. The rom update will most likely fix the audio problem for sure but I don't know about the hard reset problem. I will check tonight to see if I can figure out which rom is in my unit. My unit is still unlocked and I haven't had any problems with it so I am not going to upgrade at this time.

You may have a hardware issure because of the reset issue after using Activesync, etc.

As for as I know, they don't sell the sim cards at Wal-Mart just the refill cards. My sim card and phone number will never expire as long as is keep adding minutes. If I don't add minutes, the balance will expire in 90 days from the date of the last refill. I believe I have another 30 days before I loose my sim card and phone number.

I use a pre-paid T-Mobile simcard that I picked up at corp. kiosk at the mall. Took about 10 minutes and it was all setup for me. It is very easy to refill. You can even pick up the refill cards at Wal-Mart.

Hey all,
Just wanted to know if anyone has run into the same problem that I have. I usualy get one or two phone calls out before it locks up and I have to do a soft reset.

Excellent review Rey. I got mine last Friday and I love it. The only drawback that I have been able to find is there are only 2 buttons on the front for the phone and so they cannot be used during game play. : (
Other than that, I am impressed with it and really enjoy it much more than my mpx200.
