Does anyone know why Microsoft or Motorola has decided to leave off GPS on the MPX220, it's probably cool feature to have so you can use it with mapping applications.

Thanks, but a lot of phones now come with GPS built in, I wonder why they didn't build it into the 220. Maybe they can only fit so much on the motherboard : )

I would think that two major factors are price (GPS would add about $150) and battery life. They got BAD press over the 200s battery life, they would not want that again.

I didn't realize adding GPS would add such a cost. My friend I believe has the Motorola i90 with Nextel and it has GPS and I didn't think it was much money, but I could be wrong......As far as battery life. the 220 seems about the same with 200, I think the battery is tough to improve when we add all this functionality such as bluetooth and cameras.

I work for a GPS-for-celphone company and have since the company was formed. If you have any questions about GPS, AGPS and how they relate to phones I'd be glad to answer. smile.gif

The MPX220 works just fine with a bluetooth GPS. I'm using it right now with a NavMan unit, running betas of the TomTom and MS Mapobjects programs. It won't be too long before there are publically available navigation/mapping tools (and games) available on the Smartphone 2003 platform that will use the bluetooth GPS's.

Motorola is a little behind the times with GPS implementation in their non-IDEN phones. It would have been sweet indeed to see one in the 220 or the straight MPX coming out later this year. If they use AGPS (instead of GPS) the battery life problems aren't an issue, either. The cost used to be pretty insane, yes... but that's changed a lot too.

What's the difference between GPS and AGPS?
