Smeg.

Great write up.

You forgot to take the blue plastic off the earpiece.
hahaha.

I've installed this update on a half dozen phones.
The update has gone smoothly, but I didn't really follow the instructions.

The instructions say to manually delete all the temp files that are left around after the upgrade.
Personally, after the upgrade I do a hard reset and re-sync with my OTA Exchange server.

Seriously, the biggest reason that people are installing this upgrade is for the MSFP, which means that they have an Exchange ActiveSync server.
Wiping the phone simply means that we have to re-sync the email and re-pair the bluetooth.

All of my customers who have received this upgrade think that it makes the phone faster (although I'm sure it's got more to do with the hard reset than anything else.)
All my customers love the push email.

QUOTE (Slacker @ Apr 20 2006, 04:50 AM) *
How is this different from the SMS triggered pull method? Sounds to me like there is no difference.

Obviously; it doesn't use SMS.

The explain how it works.
Normally, when WM5 launches activesync, it opens an internet connection, and then creates an HTTPS connection to the Exchange server. Once the sync has finished it disconnects.
When using the always up to date feature, this is slighly different...
After performing a sync, the HTTPS connection to the server is left open.
Even though the connection is left open, it is not transmitting, and does not use any additional battery power to keep this connection open.
Then, if the server receives a new email, the server uses the same HTTPS channel to tell the phone that there are new messages, and the phone then runs another sync.
If the connection drops (ie you make a phone call, or enter a bad coverage area) then the phone will automatically try to connect to the server after a few minutes.

Today was my first day with this feature running.
My phone has used the typical battery life, and the battery seems to be about as run down as normal.

Performance.
I use Outlook 2003 on my laptop, in cached exchange mode, using HTTPS proxy to sync from outside of my network.
Generally, when I got a notification on my laptop that there was new email, my phone would do the same within a few seconds.
Several times, the phone notified me of new email before my laptop.
I found that if I sent myself an email, my phone generally notified me in about 10 seconds.

Things to consider about the new feature.
The new system should not affect your bandwidth; if anything you can save some data transfer as the phone is not checking in as often; it's waiting to be contacted by the server.
The new system no longer requires SMS notification, would could easily add up to several hundred SMS messages a month; possibly several thousand.

FYI.

My upgrade took 22min to do the actual upgrade, and then a few minutes to do the reboot.

Most of what I do with this phone is server activesync, with photo's and other files stored on my SD card.
I therefore have no real data on my phone.

So, immediately after my upgrade, I did a hard reset, and reloaded everything.
Having said that, after the upgrade (before the reset) all my settings and content still seemed to be okay.

I accidentally left my SD card in the slot during the upgrade, and it caused no problems.

After the upgrade, things have worked great.
I had to reset my bluetooth headsets, but that was no big deal.
The exchange activesync works great, as it did before, but now I can simply set it sync "as items arive" and stuff just works. Gotta love that.
I ran a test, and I generally had the phone start to sync within about 10s of receiving the message in my outlook inbox.

Overall, everything has been great.

Sorry, but the FAQ does not help the situation.

The FAQ basically says:
1. Turn off Voice Command.
2. Disconnect the Data.
3. Reboot your phone a lot.
4. Close all running programs.

Gee, thanks.

I just picked up my phone to see what was going on, to discover that I have 2.68MB of free RAM.
I reboot my phone several times a week, but not for the past couple of days.

I don't have ANY programs running - acording to the task manager.
I do have VoiceCommand running - I like to hear announcements of appointments, and callers.
I have the data on as I am constantly syncing with my Exchange server.

I do have my phone completley lock up on me about once every 10 days.
I just reboot it and continue - but I shouldn't have to.

The phone battery lasts less than a day.
I have to charge it whenever I'm in my car.
I have a charging station at home, and the first thing that happens when I come home is I charge my phone.

I use my phone a lot, but not excessivly.
I use about 3000 minutes a month, so let's say I'm on the phone for 2 hours a day...

I have bluetooth on all the time, but only use it when in my car.

The phone does have issues.

The issues are not enough to make me want a different phone, but it would be nice for them to address some of these issues, on and get the massaging pack release for my push-email.
(Which is just going to require that my data connection be on 24/7.)

Oh well.

I completely agree.

They're loud.
They're annoying.
Nobody likes them.
They get in the way of real communication.

Let's create a petition now:
LET'S BAN ALL LAWYERS!

What a bunch of Luddites.

I love when people take such a narrow view of the world.

I hope that they are also banning:
CRT's - they casue birth defects in pregnant women.
Smoking - some kind of cancer link.
Cellphones - more cancer.
Television signals - radio waves.
Sunlight - UV rays are dangerous you know.

They should also ban all forms of experimentation. It has been known to cause cancer in laboratory animals.

Yeah, I got two. smile.gif

They are both with the same carrier, and both are my personal phones (although I run my own consulting company, so they are also both work phones.)

The trick is that I have a big phone (Treo700W) that I carry all day, every day.
However, if I go cycling at the weekend, I call-forward my Treo to my Razr, and take the small phone with me.

I have the small phone on a family plan, so it only costs me $10 per month to do this. Most of my cycling is at the weekend, so it doesn't cost me anything for the forwarded calls.

I guess technically I not in the review's demographic, as I do not carry two phones, but that's not what the question seemed to be asking. biggrin.gif

I remember a case lots of years ago in the UK.
Basically a guy had a VCR and only watched tapes.
He did not have an antenna, nor could he watch local broadcasts without one.
He won the court case.

Since the licensing fee is for BBC only (as it does not have advertisements), it would be interesting to argue the point.
Firstly, my cellphone cannot receive OTA broadcasts.
So, the only way to get a BBC program on my cellphone is via my cellphone provider.
My cell provider should take care of the legality of distributing the program to me; I should not be responsible for that license.
OR, drop the ability to get BBC video on demand, unless the cellphone user signs a contract saying that they have a TV license.

I suspect that most of the users in question already have a TV license, and it's not like the beeb is asking for a new license here..

Qustion. Does anyone know if UK Satellite customers must also buy the license?

Sorry, gotta add this one....

http://www.communicationsresearch.net/news/

http://www.cambridge-mit.org/cgi-bin/defau...ID=6&NewsID=164

Just a VERY INTERESTING point.
The "Communications Research Network" is sponsored by BT.
That's British Telecom.

How very surprising that one of the largest incumbant telecom providers in the world just happened to find VoIP was unsafe...

If we're not careful, we'll soon hear from the record companies that using file-sharing programs is dangerous and we'll all have viruses.

Gotta love BS "reports" like these.

Their basic argument is that they use propriatary protocols, and we don't know how they work, therefore they're a security risk.

If you go to the manufacturer pages, they will often tell you that they're using security, but not tell you what. Often they will have an "independant review" posted.
eg: http://www.skype.com/security/

Bottom line is that they are just throwing sticks at one another.

I thought the current claim from this report was funny - suggesting that they should use public protocols. The only public protocols out there just DON'T WORK. H323 is a pain in the @$$ to configure, and has too many problems with firewalls, etc.

SKYPE is a great product.
It works.
It's now owned by EBay, and while that is of itself not a sure sign of security, it sure is a good sign that you know that the security issues are at least being looked at and taken seriously.

That's just my 2c.

Yeah, just like SMEG said...

Pressing and holding the power turns the PHONE on and off, but not the PDA.
There is no way to turn off the PDA.

Just wait for the next time you're on a place and they ask you to turn it off.

Tap and hold on the first email you want to delete.  Then drag your stylus down the list of emails, highlighting each one, up to the last one you want to delete.  Remove your stylus from the screen when all the emails you want to delete are highlighted.  Tap and hold on any one of them, and choose delete from the pop-up menu that will come up.  It's pretty easy.  I guess if you are wanting to do it one handed, that is another story.  WM is still not the best device for one-handed use.
*

Hey thanks Smeg.

I consider myself pretty smart (and modest), but I could not find out how to do that on my own, or by reading the manual.

I'm sure the reviewers have the same opinion.

It would be nice if there were better ways to select stuff. Using OPTION and SHIFT would be nice, if they worked the same way as regular windows works.
It would also be nice to see a select all option.

But I am glad that I've been prooved wrong; not that it's a function that I need.

Hey Sean, lay up on the guy...

Honestly the article was about 50-50 pro vs con, and fairly balanced.

He mentioned that his grips were purely from coming from a 650, and that most non-palm owners would not have these gripes.

He mentioned that the connectivity is fantastic, and only came up with two complaints.

I totally agree with you on the appointment thing, and his problem is probably that he was making the appointment from the AGENDA view, when there are no times to just click and make an appointment.

However, as far as the mail delete thing (also mentioned by Mossberg), I think they are right.
If I click on an email, it just opens it up.
If I click OK, then the message closes, and my clicked email is highlighted.
However, there is no way to highligh more than one email.
If I press SHIFT and click a 2nd email, it opens the email (and hightlights the new email when I hit OK.)
If I press OPTION and click a 2nd email, the same thing happens.
Since I cannot highlight multiple emails, I cannot delete multiple emails.

I have a few other basic issues with the phone, such as my ability to handle multiple calls, but I'll address that another time.

QUOTE (cortez @ Jan 12 2006, 08:40 PM)
i'll have to remember this when i receive my new corporate 700w.  nick - are you pleased with the performance of the 700w?  have you tried the SDIO wi-fi card or is Verizon's EVDO service fast enough?
*

Yeah, just like SMEG said, the EVDO is pretty fast, at least on downloads.
Yeah, I sometimes think that a WIFI option would be cool, as I would be able to surf and talk at the same time, but then again, how often would I do that.
I also think that WiFi would be cool when I was playing with my phone at home, etc, but honestly other than saving battery life, I'm really not sure what the advantage would be.

As to the performance, yes, I'm getting used to it.
The first day I had it working with my Exchange server doing Exchange ActiveSync; I killed the battery in about 6 hours. But I had it syncing every 5 minutes, and was in a bad coverage area.
I have since changed it to sync every 15 minutes, and the battery lasts almost all day.
The battery life is the thing that concerns me most, and I have made a point of plugging in a car charger, and plugging in my phone every time I get into my car.

The phone has been pretty reliable, but when the battery has been low, I think I've turned off the phone by mistake. Then again, I did the same thing with my RazR, so there you go.

The cubis game is very addictive.

Honestly, the best thing I like about any MS phone is the fact that I can sync to my Exchange server over the air.
I had an MPX220 before this, and the Treo700w certainly works better.

Size wise, it's a little large, but again, I'm getting used to that.
I'd be very interested to see if I'll want to switch to the Q when that comes out, right now this thing is just working.

Oh, quick update.
I got a phone call this evening from one of my customers who needed to shut down their windows server as there was a scheduled power outage in their building in a few hours. After I hung up with him, i use the Terminal Server application to remote into his server and shut it down. How cool was that?!

There has been a bit of a learning curve with this phone, while I learn what keys do what, but I'm getting used to it, so there you go.

As you may know, I went to CES this weekend.

I played with the MotoQ for a while, and compared it to my Treo.

I honestly like the feel of the Treo keyboard better.
The Q has some butons like the Treo, some buttons like the Razor.
The Razor-like buttons have a good feel to them, however it is wierd for the phone to have both kinds of buttons.

The interface was mostly similar, however there were differences between the non-standard buttons. I like the Treo's dedicated OK button.

The Q is obviously nicer in size, it's the size of the Treo, with the thickness of the Razr. The only way to make it better would be to make it the full Razr form factor.

The Treo is nice, but it is a little thick.

Lastly, not much of a compairson, but the battery on the Treo is not great so far.
I'm going to be playing more with this phone over the coming week, and will post a quick report then.

Okay, I figured this out, despite no help from Palm on my 5 phone calls to them.

Basically, I needed to install the certificates, but needed to install more than one.

I went to my SSL website using Internet Explorer on my PC.
I then had an SSL logo (padlock icon) in the status bar.
If you double-click the padlock icon, you will see the certificate.

Once you are in the Certificates window, you can click on the CERTIFICATION PATH tab, and see all the certificates that are are in use.
In my case these were:
+ ValiCert Class 2 Policy Validation Authority
+ Starfield Secure Certificate Authority
+ mydomainname.com

I then clicked on each of the three certificates and clicked on View Certificate.
This brings up the same Certificate window (albeit three different ones.)
On each, click on the Details tab.
On the Details tab, click on the COPY TO FILE button.

When running the Certificate Explort Wizard, export each of the three certificates as a DER X.509 file.

Save all thee of these files, and transfer them to the Treo.
(I used an SD card, but activesync explorer would have worked fine.)

Once the files are on the laptop, open up the File Viewer, and click on each certificate.
You will get propted to install the certificate, click YES.

Reboot the Treo.

Now, everything will work.

To be honest, I'm not sure that I needed all three certificates, but it certainly worked with all three installed.

I hope this helps other PPC users, who want to go the cheap SSL route.

Hey.

So, on Friday I got my 700w, with just enough time to pick it up and drive out to Vegas to go to the CES show. (Gotta have the latest gadgets when you hit the show.)

Anyway, for the most part, the phone is working great.
The only problem that I'm having is with my SSL certificate.

I have an SSL certificate from GoDaddy.com.
It's cheap, and it works on my PC.

However, the Treo does not recognise the cert as having a valid authoirty.
So, I manually installed the cert into the phone.
But, despite the cert showing up in the list of certificates, and despite me rebooting the phone, it continues to not trust my site.
Everything else does trust my site.

The only thing that this affects is my ability to use Exchange 2003 Server Activesync. I can verify that this works with SSL disabled, so it's not a server thing; also the server works fine from my PC, so it's definately a Treo thing.

I'll keep you guys posted on the solution.

Thanks.

Yeah, I don't believe that you should block these signals..

Firstly, if the theater was having a problem with people talking, would you expect them to ask the people to leave, or to duct-tape every person's mouth closed?

The problem here is that cellphones have become an expected requirement, and there are way too many emergency uses.

If somebody were having a hart attack would you want to wait the extra time for somebody to go and convince the pimple-faced soda-jerk that we really do need to use his phone, and will he please not insist on calling the manager.

There was a similar backlash against cellphones in schools a few years ago. Many schools tried to ban them. After the school shootings in Colorado, many changed their view on this as cellphones were the first way that police knew that there was a problem.

Trying not to sound like the "guns don't kill people" argument, but the problem here really is with the people. We need to address the issues with people.

Well, I just switched carriers, and moved to Verizon.
My MPx220 went away, just like TMobile.

My new phone is a RazR, which will last me until I'm able to get a Verizon TreoW or MotoQ.

The RazR is just so much better as a phone that the 220.
I can hear calls clearly.
The bluetooth works.
The bluetooth works in the car, and I can see my battery & signal meters in my car display. (AcuraTL).

Of course, I seriously miss the ability to just start typing the name of a contact.
I miss the ability to sync to my Exchange 2003 over the air.

Overall, I'm happy with the switch to a different carrier. The service is better.
I wish they had better phones, but right now, everyone is in a waiting game.

Just my 2c.

Not that good of a review.

Some chick saying - here, look at this phone.
Very few tech details, I think her limit of on tech was saying it had a qwerty keyboard and a 1.3MP camera.

Said it was not available until begining of 2006, hopefully it will be available sooner.

She did not address what carriers would have it, or any data capabilities.

This is great news...

$80 a month was pricy when I signed up 3 months ago. It's a great service, but the price always bothered me.
(Esecially as it was my 4th ISP account; home dsl, TMobile Starbucks, TMobile GRPS on MPx220 and now EDVO...)

However, the service is fantastic....
Recently I was installing a new office, and the DSL was delayed by a week.
I ended up leaving a laptop with my EDVO card in it, running internet sharing, and the entire office (5 people.) ran off it for a week. (Gotta love unlimited service.)

Also, I recently rode the AIDS lifecycle ride, cycling from SanFrancisco to LosAngeles over 7 days. Each nite we would stop in a campsite, and each night I had full internet service. Can't really complain about full coverage on a 600 mile trip.

The new $60 price tag is much better, which will be under $50 once I apply my corporate discount. Not too bad of a price for the fastest wireless card that you can get.

Okay, so I got my MPx220 when they came out last year.
I charge it every night - I have to the battery goes under 30% every day.

I am getting more and more warnings daily that the battery is almost dead.
I have not changed my calling habits; currently I do 60-100 minutes of phone calls per day.

I do not charge the phone in the car, just overnight, every night.

So, I think I need a new battery.

Does anyone have any suggestions; either to extend the life of my current battery, or on where to purchase a new battery?

Also, I need a source for a new belt-case; my current one is falling apart.
