I am interested in dusting off my old SMY5600 and trying this, but I have a few concerns I hope to clear up. First, where can I get a cingular/att WM2003 SE ROM for a backup in case of issues with the WM6 install. And where can I find settings for the wireless (GPRS) and SMS/MMS for the current network At&t.

I would like to get on this wagon and do something with my old devide, but I dont want to make a brick of it...

Thanks

I have tried to install this twice. I downloaded the 8.65 version for WM 5/6. It installs to the PPC and when activated, it pops up a window about purchasing a license and it closes. Anyone elese having an issue like this with the 8125?

I have been using the trial version of Opera on my 8125 for the past month, and I have alot of issues. If my phone times out with the program running, it will lock up, and only a soft reset will bring it back. Sometimes when I am surfing, it will just shut down, and again I must reset. Is this because it is the trial version, because I cant see paying for a program that is this buggy. I also dont much care for PIE or Minimo. Any comments on what other browsers people use with success would be appreciated.

Is there an application to turn on the Flash on a 8125 without activating the camera? Like a simple on off switch for the Flash.

If the phone tries to connect to GPRS, then you are not fully connected to the internet via wifi. Does the comm manager state you are connected and you are past any security? I know when I connect at some free hot spots, I have to wait a long time to log in, then I have to launch PIE to agree to the provider terms, before I can get online. I have to do this a Noah's Bagels, and public libraries. THe phone will say its connecting, but not connected. I dont know why it takes so long, where as at home, with my b/g router, after the initial log in (first time) it is a snap. and takes less than one minute.

Did you do the 802.11g reg edit? Maybe that is what is causing issues, I know I can connect to way more hot spots using g versus b.

I am interested in purchasing a BT GPS rec. and getting mapping software. I am aware that the 8125 has a slow processor. What software works the best for maps and guidance and what is the best GPS rec to get. I see alot of opionions all over the net on various products, but nothing about how it will work with the 8125. Any comments and/or suggestions are welcome. smile.gif

It clicks shut, but when I hold the phone to my ear, I feel the play on the top section. It does click shut, but there is more play with it closed, than when its in the open position. I just want to know if others have similar expirences with the Wizards, or should I get a new one?. It does not feel solid when using it as a phone. Thanks for the response

anyone else have a similar issue, or is this something to expect with this form factor

My screen pane has alot of play in it in the closed position, but when is open, it locks well. Is this normal? I am almost out of my thirty day... and I want to know if I should try o get a new one.

Thanks

Thanks again Smeg, I have not had the problem since I posted this thread... which means it was a fluke, or its that whole sick till you get to the doctors office thing... The fact that no one commented kinda told me its not common.

I agree that PPCs have a lot more capability... very cool devive!

Call UT star com, they are the main company, I think, but when I cantacted them, they do fix the SMT5600s. I asked about having my headset jack fixed (I posted about it a little while ago, my phone always thinks I have a headset plugged in, or if I do plug anything in, it says speaker phone?!?) they said 75.00 to fix it, plus parts. I did not mention that I still have a poping sound (owned the phone since Nov '04). I asked about ordering the part (headset set jack), and they said they are on back order for a few weeks. I asked if this tech, whom I was speaking to, had heard of it being a common problem, they quickly said no, but they were able to tell me that the part was back order without using the computer (Unless they are lightning fast, or had it on screen already)... seems phishy to me... I never had reception issues with the phone, for the record. I would still like to fix the issue, cause mine is unlocked, and is a great little phone (little in comparrison to my new 8125!)

Any thoughts?

I just got an 8125 through Cingular. I added a few games, TCPMP for movies, and a few others. I installed all the programs to the miniSD card (SanDisk)

I tried to launch TCPMP to show a co-worker, and it would not launch, it did not do anything, another time it said something to the effect that it was missing a component? (I think, I did not write it down). Pocket man (Pac-Man) shareware did the same thing, only it just did not respond, the phone clicked like I selected it to open, but nothing. I did a soft reset, and the programs apeared to be OK.

This weekend, all my hard buttons (messaging, IE, voice command, and camera) stop responding. no sound, no action. I did another soft reset, and they began working again.

I had to re- pair my Bluetooth headset three times to make it stick, it would work, then the next time I went to use the headset, the phone and the headset would not see each other, now it seems to be working.

My question: Is this normal for a PPC? or do I have a defective phone? Could it be the programs I have added or a settings? After installing programs, should I always do a soft reset?

I still have three weeks to trade it in. I am thinking of swapping it out for a 2125 since it appears to be more stable. Are PPC more likely to be unstable?

Does anyone else have issues like this, cause I have had a SMT5600 for over a year, and it has not acted like this.

One last question, to those using a wizard or apache, how do you keep your screen clean, I muck my up every call, and I can get my BT headset on and connected fast enough, so do you constanly clean it?

QUOTE (johnty @ Mar 16 2006, 06:09 PM) *
Hi,

I am a soon-to-be owner of the smt-5600. i intend to use it as a portable video player for my morning commute, and was wondering what would be the optimal bitrate/format to use to encode videos? i've downloaded PocketDivXEncoder. Is there something else that you guys use that you think is better for the task?

Thanks in advance!

I use CloneDVD Mobile (see the banner ad). I downloaded the trial, which is the full program that will expire. I use DVD decrypter to rip the DVD to .VOB and .IFO files. Start CloneDVD mobile, select the largest file, and follow the instructions. I set it to 176x220, set the quality to 24 or 25 (makes the file a little bigger, but better quality) Office Space about 1:30, is about 193mb, and looks good. the bit rate (which is not selectable in CloneDVD mobile) is 64kbps, movies run fine, except for my SMT wont let me use headphones while watching a movie... but thats another story...

Zoom on the CMOS in the SMT is digital. It only enlarges the pixels so you are not actually zooming in. Once you take the picture, go to the photo album and then you can zoom in (and make a bad pic even worse, less detail) So basically snap the pic now, zoom in later... its the same thing. Hope this helps...

I tried the in and out with the plug idea. It did have some effect, the phone was stuck in the speakerphone mode, and now it is back to headset. I noticed that wiggling the plug would make it switch back and forth (headset to speaker phone). I just tried runing a movie (Office Space, great to watch at work) and plugging in the headphones stoped the movie all together, then it played but very choppy...

Thanks for the tip! Do you have any idea what might be going on in my phone? Any thoughts are always welcome...

Has anyone tried using BetaPlayer to watch a DVD converted to .AVI and plugged in headphones? My SMT5600 plays the movie just fine (in Landscape mode) untill I plug in headphones, then the movie (video) gets choppy, and the audio gets very hollow. I the same movie on my friends Cingular 2125, and it works just fine. I also have an issue with my headphone/headset jack (2.5mm), it thinks I have a headset plugged in at all times. This causes it to not allow me to change profile (ring tones, etc.). When I do plug in headphones/set it changes to speaker phone, and sometimes it doesnt change back after I unplug the phones...

I was told to try canned air to blow out anything that may be shorting the jack, to no avail. I guess my next option is to replace or repair it. I dont know if they are related issues, but maybe.

1. Does the headset effect the Betaplayers ability to show a video (perhaps using more memory since it is now 2 channels instead of 1?) Is it the bit rate of the video? (should I lower the quality?) I am using cloneDVD mobile software to convert the .VOBs made from DVD decrypter.

2. Does the fact that the 2125 has more RAM/ROM make it more able to play a movie?

3. Where can I get a new headset jack? (my phone is out of warranty!)

Any and all thoughts are appreciated..

OK I tried some canned air, and now the phone is stuck in speakerphone profile. I guess I have to disasemble the unit and clean it out. What would tell the phone that it is in speakerphone mode? I thought speakerphone is a function of holding the send key while in a call, not a plug in device. Any thoughts?

About two days ago, my SMT5600 locked up (would not respond to any keys) I did a power cycle, and it was working again. I (by accident) allowed my phone to die (batt.) and since I charged it it has been funny. At first power up, it said "Home Service", and it was slugish. I power cycled again and the home service became ATT Wireless and the phone appeared to be OK. I later noticed that the profile said "Headset", not "Normal" and it will not change. I have tried adjusting the profile thru the home screen, thru the power button menu, and thru profiles in the start menu, to no avail mad.gif Another strange note is that when I plug in a headset (wired or headphones) the profile switches to speakerphone, and if left plugged in, it will go back and forth between headset and speakerphone. I have tried several power cycles, even with the headset plugged in just to see what would happen.
With that said, the phone seams to work fine otherwise, but I would like to be able to use the quiet profiles at will.

Any and All help is appreciated, MIKE
