QUOTE (abatis @ Feb 14 2005, 06:38 PM)
If you don't mind going BlueTooth, the moto HS810 headset works great with the SMT5600.  The answer/hangup/call last number all work with a puch of the headset button.
*

Voice dialing works on the HS820 too (I don't know about the 810, might work on that as well). Sound quality is generally good as well.
Although, I have been drooling over that Jabra BT800 with the CID on it.

I'd pay the $10 and get the NA package... if you read the fine print, if over a 3 month period less than 50% of your calls are on the AT&Tingular network they reserve the right to terminate your service.
I'm sure if you put it to them in terms they understand (ie, it'll cost them a lot more to keep you locked in, as I'm sure Robbers doesn't let them off cheap) they'll let you out. Just make a lot of calls within Canada during your unlimited minutes time wink.gif

By 'correctly' do you mean the answer/hangup button will work on it? I have a Plantronics over-the-ear headset that works great, but doesn't have anything but a mute switch on it.

eBay is usually a pretty good place to start, I just picked up a car charger for my Audiovox SMT5600 on there dirt cheap. The part number you're looking for is CNR4100. If you didn't get the cradle either - look for CRU4100 as well for a package deal (note: the cradle part does not include the AC adapter, I'm just thinking that you might find a deal on both).

You probably won't see one for AT&T, I think all plans for any new AT&T branded phones have been scraped. If Cingular decides to sell it unlocked you'll be in business - otherwise you'll need to unlock a Cingular or T-Mo version of the Treo.

I picked up the Belkin kit for my SMT (found it for $5, so no big loss) and noticed that it didn't charge the battery. The USB cable that came with it works just fine off of the PC - but not in the lighter adapter. I quit fighting it and bought the Audiovox adapter off of some reseller on eBay.

With the way AT&T is liquidating their stock of phones, you should be able to get an SMT5600 on the cheap. By cheap, I mean <$250 - but that's the price of admission to the SmartPhone world today. Prices on AT&T's old kit should keep sliding down for now.

I've noticed most people will get a SIM from a local pay-as-you-go carrier when they travel overseas (no contracts).

From what I've been told, you will not be charged the ETF for switching to Cingular (Orange). They will charge you an activation fee, of course, and you'll be locked into a new contract term (1 or 2 years) instead of just having the remainder of your AT&T left.

I like the way the Smartphone platform does the contact search... similar to T9, but doesn't require the multi-tap for characters.
In T9 - if you were looking for "Bob", you would need to press 2-2-6-6-6-2-2. On the smartphone, you would only need to press 2-6-2. This would also bring up any other letter combinations, as well as any phone number with 262 in it, but the list should be pretty short.

I don't know of any way to change the behaviour - but I'm sure he'll come around to liking the new way, I know I did.

I talked with a regular CSR. I hope your information is more correct than mine, but that is what the CSR (non-NBO) told me.

Using your FAN discount normally does extend your contract back to 12 months... but I don't think they're always upfront about that.

First off, I was impressed that someone in AT&T's customer service departmetn had a clue about anything regarding the merger - but I guess they've all been trained on it.
I had a couple questions that I got answers on (some good, some not so good).

** DISCLAIMER **
This is the information given to me by the AT&T representative I spoke with, and in no way is guaranteed - much like all previous AT&T experiences. </disclaimer>

-Existing phones (voice devices), to get rollover you need to switch to a Cingular plan which WILL require you to get a new phone.

-Data devices, I specifically asked about my SMT5600 and the rep I was speaking with told me that they will be able to update the ROM on the phone with Cingular software. She had mentioned BlackBerry as well, so I'm guessing that all PDA/Data phones will be given ROM upgrades. You will then be able to get a Cingular plan on your existing AT&T data device.

-Existing features will be maintained. I specifically asked about the North America calling package, which the rep assured me would be continued with AT&T and would be made available to Cingular plans. She said that all AT&T 'add-on' services would be available from Cingular.

So far so good... now for the big disappointment (well, for me anyway)

All national account (foundation/premier - whatever you know it by) discounts will be discontinued. You will continue to receive the current discount while you remain on the AT&T plan (no rollover, mobile-to-mobile, etc). Obviously, they'll stop selling phones soon too, killing that discount. Your company will need to negotiate (or re-negotiate) their national account with Cingular in order to get discounts.
I don't know about other companies agreements with Cingular, but I don't get equipment discounts with Cingular... really going to miss the 50% off AT&T gave (well, not as much as I would have if they still discounted data devices).

So... welcome to the new AT&Tingular.

EDIT: While you will still probably need to get a new phone, you still can not go to a Cingular store and buy a new phone (like the MPx220) without signing up as a new customer - YET. They are in the process of moving our accounts over to the Cingular system - so for right now, we're still AT&T customers.

Rate plans tend to vary by market. Obviously, they don't need your business in 73069 as they would in 90210. (gee, wonder where you came up with that zip).

Not to mention that once the new HTC "Blue Angel" (Siemens SX66 and other variants) finally find their way to our shores, the MPx will be far too outdated with it's current specs. I think the dual-hinge is a neat idea, and I'd love a clamshell PPC - but it really needed to be released 6 months ago to make any significant impact. I for one have given up on the MPx, and am now holding out for the ATT or Cingular SX66.

That's strange... all the headsets I had didn't work on the PPC4100, but do on the SMT5600 (I had the same problem, can hear them and they can't hear me). I have a Plantronics and the one that came with my T720.
Have you tried the one that ships with the SMT yet? I'm just wondering if it's a dud phone jack.

Reset seemed to do the trick. Now I can see the little boxes and the checkmarks.
Thanks for the help.

Nope, I don't see checkboxes anywhere but on the profile selection screen... maybe I have a dud. Using the default everything.

Anyone else notice that you can't see what's selected/unselected with some of the options.
Like "Any Key Answer" - I can't tell if it's on or off (Settings - Phone - Call Options).
You can also see the same thing with "All Day Event" when creating a new appointment.
I'm using the ATT default schemes, is it just a fault with that or is there something else wrong here?

The Voq A11 maybe a great solution if you want the 850 band. The MPX200 is not even in the same league as far as engineering and features.

Did you mean the MPx200 or MPx220?
I like the A11 "Professional Phone", but I prefer clamshells and would like BT (don't care about camera).

I never figured it out. Bugged the ^*&& out of me too - it would make the orange light on the phone blink for a while making me think I had a voicemail or something.

Not only don't you leave... but when the MPx220 comes out I'll probably use my 50% foundation discount and lock myself in for another year of pain.

I'm talking about the voicemail speed dial #, the GPRS settings, etc... you know, all the fun stuff that you change when you unlock your phone that the carriers build into their ROMs. Also would take care of getting rid of mMode when you go to T-Mo and adding all their custom apps (and vice-versa). I think there's probably a few MPx200 users that would have loved a T-Mo ROM to load on their phone so they could just unlock and go.

I think the only place you'll have a shot at getting an unbranded/unlocked version of the device would be directly from HP (albeit unlikely), and then there would be absolutely no discount from MSRP.
But if AT&Tingular will be carrying this phone - it would be pretty sweet if you could get it unlocked and update the firmware to whichever carrier you're using rather than fool around with all the manual settings like on the MPx200

Actually, from what I've read there is a very serious technical flaw with the MPx220...

...AT&T is the service provider.
