Many of you are interested in getting the latest leaked firmware files. We all want the latest and greatest. But why does MGN have a policy against putting a link to a file hosted elsewhere? What's the big deal anyway? I mean we really are not hosting the files, just telling you where to find them; right?

Well here is why we don't allow it:

QUOTE
An anonymous reader writes "Major record labels are celebrating in Sydney, Australia today. It took almost two years but they've finally won a legal battle against a Queensland man and his ISP for alleged music piracy. Amazingly, Stephen Cooper didn't even have to host the alleged pirated files. All he did (allegedly) was to hyperlink to a few sites that had infringing sound recordings. His ISP didn't escape either. Even the ISP's parent company got sued. No jail time but all parties will have to pay costs."

The man had links to sites that hosted pirated music, and he got busted. So we don't allow links to sites that host pirated firmware. Since all of the MGN staff are volunteers, and we seem to be missing the big corporate dollars to pay for legal representation, we don't allow links to firmware. Pretty simple.

Slacker: "Source: Slashdot"

If you look carefully on Slashdot again you can see the following text on it:
  1. "The following comments are owned by whoever posted them. We are not responsible for them in any way."
  2. "All trademarks and copyrights on this page are owned by their respective owners. Comments are owned by the Poster."

Must understand the different between "The man had links" and "The Forum have people's posts".

Every user post or comment is owned by poster. The forums moderators can't check every link: maybe someones link called "Tutorial for using toilet paper - flower.su" directing to hard porno with dirty roms and firmware files inside the dead bodys or to the page with links on it. rolleyes.gif
Or, for example, the link called "Rom & firmware" really redirecting to the empty page.

Only the poster of comment/post must "pay for legal representation" to anybody, it's like the owner of the house in the town can't pay to recording company if somebody wrote the graffity "Get music for free there - ***.org" on the wall of that house.

Second, when I'm purchasing the phone I'm didn't sign any papers with any agreements about firmware inside. So, this is my phone, and I can drop it from 100-th floor or disassemble it or eat it or give it whith or without firmware (or firmware with or without the phone) to somebody.

Or maybe to sell the phone (with firmware) is illigal too, cause nobody have no license from any hardware company for selling phones? Ok, we must shut down the whole eBay because bad guys there every day selling wirmwares (!horror!) inside the phones (without any license) blink.gif

So, you can just screw up any "labels". cool.gif

Or

The same way any links to the Google must be removed from here because the Google' page have direct links to firmwares and music files.
(So, you must remove and suppress any links from here, even whithout http:// in it, just ban any text from users: empty comments - no breaking any lows) biggrin.gif

Volgot,

Thank you for your interest in MGN and your response on this topic. Please understand that we have been contacted by content owners in the past to remove links to their pirated copyrighted material. As an all volunteer organization we really do not have the time to deal with irrate copyright owners and also try to keep the boards productive for our viewers. Therefore, our policy is to remove links to suspect material when we find it on our boards.

If people really want to find something, a google from our MGN google search bar is appropriate and generally works for me.

Regards,

abatis
