ok i got it past that error and got a new one, (seems like one after the other), it says 692 hardware failure in the modem. any suggestions

I get the same error. I'm with AT&T - so I suspect that the Cingular settings aren't working for me. If anyone gets the settings for AT&T, I'd appreciate them as well.

I purchased my phone through AT&T also. I'm also at .343 on the firmware. It seems to work fine. The volume was adequate while I was at lunch today - in the Macaroni Grill down the street (for those who don't know, Macaroni Grill is a "large room" style restaurant where the noise levels are intentionally high).

I did have a strange problem when I got back to the office - the phone seemed to be functioning normally, except that it said: "no signal", and even when I tried to manually select a carrier it wouldn't connect. Power-down, remove battery, return battery, power up - seemed to work... Very strange indeed...

I too have owned both. Here are my thoughts...

1) The SMT5600 didn't work correctly in India, even though it supports the same frequencies as my Sony T616 - which did work. It appeared to be an authentication problem (I kept getting "Denied" or "Login failed" messages, even though it showed that I had a signal). My SIM card worked in a different phone, so it it shouldn't have been a problem with my account.

2) The SMT5600 had problems with the Bluetooth ActiveSync. It seemed to turn off Serial Port 7 (outgoing serial) for some reason. So every once in a while, I would have to go back through the Start menu (to the "Accessories" or "Configurations" (I think) folder and select the "BT Setup" app to fix this. Then I would have to reconfigure Bluetooth again to get ActiveSync working.

3) SMT5600 has a larger screen than the MPx220.

4) SMT5600 had occassional signal problems (especially at my house, which is notorious for poor reception), but they were no worse than the SE T616 that I had previously.

5) SMT5600 is a candy bar phone, requiring that I lock it (I too put it in my pocket). It had a handy "hold the hangup button down for 2 seconds" lock feature, but I have always hated the requirement to press 2 buttons to unlock it. I also agree that the autolock feature is _screwed_ (since it requires a password to unlock), but that is a WinMob 2003 "thing", not an SMT5600 "thing".

6) USB Charger for SMT5600 _only_ worked from the serial port on my computer. (?!) When I plugged it into the USB "lighter" charger in my car, it didn't work. When I plugged it into the USB wall-outlet, it didn't work (and this included testing it with a 6v adapter that came with the chargers). Can't understand what they did to make this not work - but it was successful.

7) MPx220 I bought from BestBuy was unlocked, but only worked on the ATTWS network - when it tried to roam to Cingular or TMo it would dial the number (and the other guy would get the ring), but I would get nothing on my end (no sound at all - no "ring", no "clicks" nothing). Moreover, when someone called me and it was on Cingular or TMo, the phone would ring but when I answered it would be dead (and they other person couldn't hear me). Firmware was version .342. I returned that phone and ordered the phone from the "business.attwireless.com" site, and got an ATTWS version (firmware .343). It works fine in roaming mode. (It also has the benefit of being correctly configured for Internet access and mMode, so I get that without a hassle as well.)

8) MPx220 is a little quiet on the earpiece. Speakerphone seems OK to me. But even the earpiece is audible, just not as loud as I would like.

9) MPx220 BT works perfectly for ActiveSync (both MPx220's I've had worked without a hitch).

10) MPx220 signal strength (even at my notoriously weak-signal home) is 3+ bars all the time (mostly 4 bars (out of 4)). I have not had a dropped call, or a bad signal yet.

11) Flip-phone, no need to lock keys, and the screen doesn't get all scratched up in my pocket.

12) The USB charger for the MPx220 works everywhere (without the 6v adapter). So I can plug it into my car lighter adapter, and my wall-outlet adapter - as well as my computer.

13) I like the scroll system on the MPx220 _much_ better than the barrel doohicky on the SMT5600. I just didn't like the feel of the barrel thing, and I was difficult to hit "top-dead-center" to get a click.

14) I couldn't seem to turn off "key click" on the SMT5600, but the MPx220 does shut it off... A minor thing, but annoying when you are trying to "secretly" surf the web during a meeting. ;-)
