Mobile Gadget News :: Making Your Mobile Life Simpler _ Motorola MPx220 _ Modifying the External LCD

Posted by: b00mz Oct 9 2005, 12:46 PM

I have just received my MPx220, and when looking at some pictures online and also on the box of the phone, I noticed that people have different backrounds on their external LCD and also have the date displayed. I was wondering if anyone knew how to change these? I would like to have the date displayed, I could care less about the backround, but it would be cool to mess around with it. I looked in the manual and it says to go to start>settings>more>more>phone settings. When I do this I get to a screen that looks like this:
1
1
3
\storage\mydocuments\extlcd\space_thriller.jpg
1
0

MPx220
Is this the real menu I should be looking at to modify the settings or is there something wrong with my phone? If there is something wrong has anyone had this happen to them and how did they fix it? If there is nothing wrong can someone please inform me on how to modify this so I can atleast display the date on the external screen?
Thanks alot for your help!

When I go to start>settings>more>more>phone settings I get 8 options that are changable.

Flip answer: On /off
Ext. LCD Style: Style 1 / Style 2 (STYLE 2 gives you DATE and TIME)
Ext. LCD Contrast: 0-9
Ext. LCD Background image: Default, Ascension, Fragmentation, Landmark,
Modern, Rubix, Sharp Edge, Skyscraper,
Space Thriller, Urban Dream
Preferred Band: Auto, 850/1900, 900/1800
TTY Calls: On / Off
SIM Number: xxx-xxx-xxxx
Device Name: Mpx220

The background images can be chosen and modified like any other file on the phone. I would guess someone has done it before and that's why you get the file location instead of the file name. Try looking in the folder and see what you get.

Well then I guess there is something wrong with my phone because that is something completely different than what I have.

WARNING: Newby here!

I too show your type of phone setting display that cannot be scrolled through. Mine looks like:

1
2
3
___default___
1

mpx220

So my problem is that I can't seem to be able to change the external lcd background image. mad.gif

I am running WM2003SE
ROM: Operator: 0.530.7002.0
Manufacturer: 1.390.0.0
Microsoft: 4.21.15101.0

Can anyone help us change our external LCD? And remember, I'm just a newb.

Thanks.

It looks like the O/S is messed up. I'm not sure which carrier you're using (one person with the same problem said Cingular), but nonetheless, it looks like you're running an old ROM version.

What I would do first is perform a hard reset on the phone (keep in mind this will wipe out any programs or contacts you have stored on the phone). You do this by powering off the phone, and then power it back on while holding down the big Blue Button. After you do this it will ask you if you want to format. Say, yes. It will take a little while to finish reloading - and it will also take the phone a little longer to boot up the first time you re-start it. Don't be alarmed by that and just let it boot up.

If that doesn't fix the problem, then I would recommend flashing your phone to a newer ROM. Cingular has version 1.43 avilable on the Motorola site and there are other Generic (non-Cingular) versions available as well.

Here's a link to the Cingular ROM Updater:

You'll have to find the others on your own since it's against the FAQ for me to post the links to them. You can usually find them by doing a Google search, though.

Do you want to fix the menu problem or just change the Ext. image? If you just want to change the image, then you can connect up using Activesync and copy a new image to \storage\mydocuments\extlcd\ and name it "space_thriller.jpg". There's probably a RegKey you can modify, but I'm not sure what it is off the top of my head.

In my opinion, the Space Thriller image is the best one and provides the best contrast to the white date text. That's just my preference, though. smile.gif

Hi everyone! think its my first post here..

Ok here, try Master Reset or if you dont wanna come up with the Master Reset, install PHM Registry Editor or any Registry Editor then navigate to HKCU - Control Panel - ExternalLCD - Values -

Change the Style (dword) value to
1 - Operator and Time style
2 - Date and Time style

Change the BgImage (string) value to
any image directory
ex. \Storage\My Documents\ExtLCD\Mymage.jpg

If any of those reg entries are missing, you got no choice but to have it Master Reset if you really wanna solve the problem.

Goodluck!
