That sounds like a similar problem I had with my old MPx220. In my case, it was a hardware issue. The charge/sync port of the MPx220 can get pretty picky, and you have the put the cable in at the exact right angle for it to stay recognized as a USB device without detaching itself from the PC.

Well - it's not a hardward problem. The cable, whether 'almost' completely plugged into the MPX's port, or fully plugged in so that it 'clicks', doesn't make any difference in Windows XP's treatment of this particular driver. So, I'll have to see if anyone has a better idea, or try different computers in hopes of finding one that accepts this driver.

But, smeg36, you seem like someone who might have opinions on Bluetooth headsets. I just purchased a Motorola H700 (tiny, good aesthetics) and will be returning it (terrible range, noisy, loose volume buttons). So, I just thought I'd pick your brain to see what you thought.

Thanks

Make sure the USB Connection option is unchecked in the Active Sync Connection Settings Tab. Once you do that the computer should see the phone as a new device and seek drivers. Direct the computer to your *.inf. The inf works fine with XP.

Another issue may be your firewall settings - occasionally that will block the connection. Someone with 220 experience may have additional insight if the above doesn't work.

Thanks for your answer. It doesn't however fact help my situation - so I'll hope that someone with a 220 can chime in. Whether USB connection is checked or not doesn't make any difference. The problem is with windows Device Manager and not with ActiveSync. The computer either does not recognize the device and gives an error balloon that says so, or it continually updates the device manager settings as if one was plugging and unplugging a USB device (about every 10 seconds). And I've tried different USB ports as well (which always seems to me to be an oxymoron - but sometimes makes a difference.

And again - this happens with two different computers. I'm wondering if I should try it with a computer running an older version of windows perhaps. One without - for example - XP SP2 - or Windows 2000

Alright..... I have all of the required files to update the ROM on my new MPX220 to the new 1.43 Cingular ROM. Only thing is, I can't get the USB Driver (smartfon.inf) to install on either of my two computers running Windows XP Pro (with all current updates).

On my Dell desktop, when the phone is plugged into a USB port (and all of this without SIM card or battery installed in the phone), I get the 'bum bum' sound that occurs when you plug a new USB device in (plug and play notification sound). It notifies me that it the device has been installed, then 10 seconds later the sound notifies me that it has been 'unplugged' - then immediately gives the sound notification that I've just plugged a device in - and on and on. So, with this setup, I will not even think about updating ROM when I don't know if the device is constantly connected to my computer.

On my Dell laptop, I get the following error message after installing the driver:
"On of the USB devices attached to this computer has malfunctioned, and Windows does not recognize it. For assistance in solving this problem, click this message."

So, does anyone have any advice about installing this 'unsigned' USB driver? Or have an update on a one that actually works with Windows XP. I can't believe that many people have updated their ROM's without a stable driver.

Thanks!!

There's no ROM incompatibility danger. If it's a ROM for the MPx220 it will work on any MPx220, regardeless of region. The Cingualr ROM, and the Asian ROMs, will work on your EU packaged phone no problem.

Thanks and Happy Cinco de Mayo!

Yeah, that's about what I expected them to tell you. Yes, if you try to run the Motorola update tool on the Cingular or Motorola website it will recognize that you don't have a Cingular ROM, and will say you have the most recent ROM (even though you don't). A non-Cingular phone would update fine with a Cingular ROM on it. It just checks the ROM you have on your phone. To get around this you have to find the Motorola Offline Updater and the ROM you want to update to.

Thanks so much for your help - I have all the ROM files and Offline updater - but I have one more question.... And I think you answered this, but I'm just making sure - before I head down the ROM update path with my new phone.

My phone is an unlocked phone that was packaged in the EU. Will the most current ROM (1.43) from Cingular work on it? Is the only ROM incompatibility danger in regards to mixing Asian ROM's and Western ROM's?

Thanks!!

I found my old stuff - been ages since I messed with this stuff. No need to fool with registry.

Copy whatever Homescreen your using to your PC and change the name by adding .txt to the end. USe notepad to edit. You will find a plugin near the top change it like this: copy it back - but save your original so you have the code.

<!-- Carrier/SIM Plugin -->
<plugin clsid="{E09043DF-510E-4841-B652-388316977A7A}" name="iamaprick" height="20">
<label>
<text lang="0x0409">I-am-a-prick.net</text> </label> This is wher3 you change it
<clock>
<time mode="12" x="120"/>
</clock>
[attachment=2010:attachment]

Now I am a great guy. I used to be a prick.

That is hilarious - a great idea for my home screen to be sure. I need to have a good doppelganger.

I am wondering though - where in my file tree would I find the XML file for my home screen? I'll search and hope to find, but if you have any suggestions within the file tree, I'd love it. Thanks SO much. And don't worry, I won't tell anyone that you used to be a prick.

Read through omega's blog. It has great info on the MPx220 ROM. Motorola only have the Cingualr ROM on their website, so if you don't have a Cingular branded phone, they won't let you get the ROM. You'll have to find them somewhere else. I recommend Google. Since they aren't available on the Motorola website, we don't provide links to them because they are questionably legal.

Thanks SO much for the help. I'll embark upon this update procedure soon. I'm curious though - the Motorola ROM update is on the cingular website - if I were to run the update tool, would it just not let me update it because I don't have a Cingular phone? I thought I'd try to use the tool, but didn't want to 'corrupt' the software on the phone and then have it not work at all.

I spoke with a Motorola Technician today and he basically said that Motorola won't help customers who don't purchase their phones through a provider - such as CINGULAR. So, they only want to help other companies, not the customers who end up using their phones. Rather depressing and irritating. Booo Motorola

Motorola won't provide you the ROM, but you can flash any MPx220 ROM on any MPx220 and not encounter a problem. You'll just have to locate the ROM elsewhere.

OK, so I'm a newbie - why wouldn't Motorola provide the ROM? I guess I'll find the answer to that question from Motorola themselves if they respond to my request.

- but where would I find it and how would I 'flash' the ROM that I find? Would it be an .exe file?

Sorry, but I'm a beginner on this. And thanks!

Yes, it's really worth it. If you want to keep a generic ROM on the phone you should find the generic 1.47 or 1.49 ROM. Basically the updated ROM just fixes a lot of the bugs, and increases the volume.

I just purchased a new dark colored 220 as well which appears to be from Spain (Euro plug, language in Spanish) and the ROM is the older 1.28. On the Motorola site however, it claims that the new ROM is ONLY for units purchased in North America - is there any truth to this? I have written to Motorola and hopefully will hearback that it is possible to update my ROM without trouble. But if anyone has experience with this, I'd love to know if there's a danger of file corruption by updating the ROM to a unit that didn't appear to come from North America (but was purchased from TigerDirect).

I recently upgraded from the MPX200 to the MPX220 (Unlocked). I have an old AT&T Wireless SIM Card, and the provider on the 'Today' screen reads 'AT&T Wireless/Cingular Wireless'. The provider name is too long and wraps on the line below it which covers up the clock.

I have downloaded a registry editor, but don't really have a clue as to what to edit to change this provider name. I'd like to not have to purchase a $20.00 program to rearrange the today screen, so if anyone has any advice for editing the provider name, I'd LOVE it.

Also - I see that some have used 1GB and even 2GB MiniSD cards, so I'm assuming the 'Maximum data size' of the MiniSD card used with the MPX220 isn't 512MB as they claim. If I'm wrong here and anyone has a 'caution' before I purchase one, send it on. smile.gif

Thanks!
