Robert Redford Announces Sundance Global Short Film Project for Mobile

Good news for people with great eye-sight!

"Citing the experimental and groundbreaking nature of the collaboration, Bill Gajda, Chief Marketing Officer at the GSM Association said, "The emergence of mobile as the fourth screen is already changing the way people are educated and entertained. This project will explore the potential of the mobile medium to deliver compelling, cinematic entertainment to a global audience on an unprecedented scale."

The Sundance Institute will exclusively premiere completed short films on the opening day of the world's biggest annual mobile event, the 3GSM World Congress in Barcelona next year (12-15 February 2007). The event attracts more than 50,000 visitors annually from across the mobile value chain. The films will be available for cell phone download during the congress for attendees, and for broader distribution through mobile carriers immediately following the event - further details will be announced early next year."

Joking aside, this is a pretty big development. Ironically, independent movies are thriving while large "block-buster" films are increasingly become very expensive gambles that producers are less willing to make. The recent Verizon YouTube announcement points to how streaming video content for mobile devices is seen as the next big thing.

And why not? Digital music took off because files were small enough and bandwidth cheap enough to make the investment in time and money worth it to the consumer. With HSDPA coming online and if pricing is made "right," the same equation starts to hold for digital video content. I'm surprized Marvel Comics hasn't already jumpd on this confluence. Comics and kids and mobile devices. Ka-ching!

What are considerations you think carriers and content providers should keep in mind as they make mobile video plans?

In an earlier posting to this thread I suggested that mobile devices and cartoons are a good match -- well it seems Sprint and The Anime Network are onto it.

Sprint announced a deal with cable television channel Anime Network to provide animated mobile video programming to Sprint Power Vision subscribers. For an additional $4.95 per month, users can now tune to Sprint TV channel 66 to view clips from five Anime Network series: the action programs "Mezzo", "Kino's Journey" and "Megaman", the sci-fi opus "Divergence Eve and the comedy "Wandaba Style."

This stuff is big. Japan has an exploding mobile manga market, where wireless comics account for $19.6 million in annual revenues, more than half of the nation's $38.5 million annual digital publishing haul.
