You have to make sure that the videos are in the correct format (as 01-digital said, otherwise it won't find the correct codec).

Alternatively, you can get hold of something like PocketTV (or others) and you get access to different codecs that way (I believe).

Also, just seen the price of this:
http://www.expansys.com/product.asp?code=112022

Does it fit the MPx200? PocketTV seem to recommend it.

I saw a link to DVD2SPV the other day and it's caught my attention. I downloaded the Shrek2 trailer and PocketTV and they look excellent on the quality screen that the MPx200 has.

Questions.

1) Has anyone made any "real life" documentation of battery life when using something like PocketTV? I've read various people claiming that they've watched things like The Matrix on a plane, and it's made virtually no dent on battery life. Trouble is, I'm a cynic and I don't believe them :-)

2) I'm looking at getting an el-cleapo MMC card to start to play about with the quality of these videos. Can anyone recommend a cheap UK store? I've got some GadgetShop vouchers (almost enough for the 64MB they sell), so I'll probably use them initially but they're very expensive for what they are.
I don't mind if it's online, as long as it's reputable.

I've re-read that page. Those "bulk texts" are optional extras - you'd have to contact T-Mobile to get those rates.

So, conclusion: I think it's 5 cents per text currently (none free). If you contact them, you can add 300 per month for $2.99 per month, or 1000 per month for $6.99.

http://dictionary.reference.com/search?q=sms&r=67
http://www.nwfusion.com/details/703.html

Basically, SMS is "texting". A short (160-char, normally, but depends on phone and carrier) textual message.

I live in the UK, so I can't say much about that T-Mobile plan in the US. However, over here receiving SMS messages is free. Cost for sending an SMS depends entirely on the plan you're on.

Quick delve on t-mobile US site... I assume you mean this one?
http://www.t-mobile.com/plans/NationalRate...asp?PlanID=3182

I quote:
300 Text Messages - Send and receive short emails, or text and instant messaging (up to 140 characters) using your T-Mobile phone! 300 text messages for $2.99 or 1000 text messages for $6.99 per month. $0.05 per additional message.

So, first 300 texts (as I read it) are free. Maybe that's wrong. Maybe it's first 300 are $2.99. Slightly badly worded. Maybe it's 300 free, then if you buy a bulk of 300 it's $2.99 (~1 cent per text), and a bulk of 1000 is $6.99 (0.7 cents per text). If you don't buy bulk, it's 5 cents per text.

Again, not ENTIRELY sure how these things work over there, but I'd doubt if they're much different to over here.

As an aside, this would seem to confirm the old "AT&T blocking Win2k3 OS" rumour that's made its rounds on the MPx200 boards.

If it were MS and Verizon that were releasing this, then it would be OS manufacturer and carrier for the MPx200 as well.

Nahh, 220 is (by all accounts) to have lots of extra hardware goodies. Bluetooth, camera etc.

What Moto/MS/carriers seem to be oblivious to is that some of us physically cannot have cameras on our phones due to security restrictions. We wouldn't purchase the 220 if it was available. The 200, however, is perfect.

Are you running the AT&T firmware, or the generic one? There have been issues with AT&T firmware and tone phones ("Press 1 to go to sales, press 2 to wait in a queue for hours, press 3 and I'll cut you off"), but never heard of this before.

Bingo.

The big-boys are dominating a market, suppressing the market so that they can increase turnover.

Capitalism at it's best.

By the way, has anyone pushed Motorola/Microsoft directly about this? As AT&T have washed their hands of it, can't it be pushed out via the telephone manufacturer (or are they in the same boat as AT&T, wanting to sell new units?), or via Microsoft?

Surely MS are the people that have the most to gain from the software coming out, even if it's on a "use this at your own peril" disclaimer. It'll satisfy the people that want the upgrades, and the people that flash it and destroy their phone don't have any support from either MS or their provider (they waived it when they flashed).

nskqti: yeah, we know - how about reading replies from other people (even in this thread). The only person who explicitly said that it was AT&T's fault was an apparent MS "insider". Of course, whether he's really in that position is anyone's guess. :-)

bhamster - I would be surprised if you get 2003 on it, but it's simple to check. Just go into the phone settings and it's in there.

I'll see if I have time this weekend to send some annoying emails and make some annoying phone calls.

Problem is, from the sound of other threads on this site, that AT&T is blocking MS from releasing the upgrade at the US end. If that's the case, I doubt that the upgrade has even made it over the pond, let alone someone's in the contractual position to release it to the public.

Unfortunately, it needs to be put forward from an economic viewpoint if Orange or any operator will take notice. Either "investigate it or I'll leave" (not really a threat given my normal monthly outgoing, and needs to be en-masse) or "release it and you'll get more customers".

As I guess the reason they've pulled the MPx200 from their site is that they're gearing up for the 220 and/or the 100 over the next few weeks/months. Put in context against the money they'll get from that, I doubt we'd win.

Regarding #5...

Is there any leaverage we can use from this on Orange, out of interest? At the very least they could be prosecuted under false advertising laws. They sell you what they are advertising as 2003. When it's 2002, it's not what they sold you.

It's like me selling DreamWeaver MX but advertising it as it's MX2004. They're different pieces of software.

Okay, Orange would probably (if pushed) just say "sorry" and withdraw your phone. And you'd have to convince people that you bought it solely on the strength of the 2003 argument and were told explicitly that it was 2003.

But even so.

Most Orange phones are operator-locked. I've had several from them and I've never been able to use other SIMs in them.

That said, there are unlocking sites that will give you the unlock code - have a look at the Links section. I think they charge a small amount though ($10 or so, don't know - happy with my UK Orange SIM :-)).

Re: #5.
Yeah. I know. I'm thinking of taking that up with Orange. When I bought mine, it was ADVERTISED as 2003 (even though I knew it was 2002). And in the manual it says it's 2003.

#1, I don't sync with Outlook, can't answer (I sync direct with POP3 server), #2, I just pull the lead out - never had the problem you're describing sorry, #3 don't tend to use GPRS (damned expensive on Orange!) - use the pass-through cable so it goes out your Internet connection!

Sorry, I'm kinda useless on the other questions!

Of course, if you want to do something about it - try checking out the details of the AT&T CEO that someone posted in the MPx200 forum the other day.

Call them and whinge like ^*&&. Ask them directly. If he doesn't know, ask him if he would please find out. Check the stats for this site (link on the left) - it's getting HUGE coverage. Notify him to that effect and see if he's interested/cares.

My guess is that if he can pull a PR stunt out of it, he may actually still be in a position of power once AT&T finish restructuring.

UK MPx200, on Orange (unlocked) returns "Command not supported".

Sure it's "999"?

A lot of people have posted that although the generic firmware appears to "unlock" the 900 band, it's not actually usable, or is exceptionally unstable (i.e. works for a minute, then never again).

But there are a lot of conflicting reports.

Just when you press enter, you find the rest:

If someone has enough courage, they could attempt to call:

and see what they can get.

General contact (will reach the grunts and get junked, probably):
http://www.orange.co.uk/about/contact/

Exec Vice Pres:
http://www.orange.com/English/aboutorange/...wood.asp?bhcp=1
CEO:
http://www.orange.com/English/aboutorange/e_ahuja.asp

No contact details though. However, I found that through Google in about 5 minutes. Not to say more information isn't around. I'll dig about later.

In that case, you're off the hook :-)

I would like to contact someone high up at Orange and try and push this from the UK aspect. Any idea if MS "UK" has hold of this image, or whether it's something that's not been pushed down from the US yet?

Obviously if I get someone at Orange interested, I don't want them to go to their contact at MS and them shrug in response. :-)

If I was in the US, I would. Unfortunately, I'd stay as anonymous as possible if I were you - posting personal contact information for someone there may cause you one ^*&& of a legal nightmare.

Also a legal nightmare for this site - I wouldn't be surprised if that disappears quickly.

However, I can't understand your statement that AT&T are blocking it. Surely it would require ALL operators to block it? If MS really DID want to give it out, then surely it could be pushed out through the OTHER operators that supply the phone (T-Mobile, Orange in UK, others worldwide)...?

REALLY?!

I've had few problems with the MPX200 - in fact, I've had maybe one crash (off and on again, bingo), and maybe once the settings went screwy so I couldn't get my mail (my fault, fiddling).

But a hard reset and it was sorted.

I don't like to post statements like this because (as you can tell above) I like to try and see both sides of the argument.

But, having had Nokias and Eriksson mobiles in the past, and my g/f has had Sony-Eriksson and Siemens, I can't say that the problems reported here are a) restricted to this handset/OS, or cool.gif particuarly bad compared to other mobiles.

Remember some of those little Nokias (8210...?)?! Corrupted screens, wouldn't text. Loads of them were recalled and loads of people had to get them swapped for different models because the firmware just locked after a while.

I'm not going to argue about the upgrade though - I want it too. I'm a software developer and I'd love to be able to write some .NET stuff for my SmartPhone to help me in my work etc.

But you might want to take a step back before you throw your MPX200 away. There are other mobiles out there with much bigger problems. Don't get tunnel-vision.

And, as an aside, it would surely be good on the part of the network operators to actually push this...?

For too long they've been locked in a battle of services, normally (and I'm not getting at any one operator here) with pitiful customer service. (Yes, I'm on Orange, no, have never used _their_ customer service).

I know this will probably never be read by anyone of any great importance in the circles it would need to be (read: high up in MS/AT&T/Orange/T-Mobile - no disrespect to anyone here!), but I honestly think that the only REAL reason for this can only possibly be greed.

If, as the original poster insists, the firmware is done and stable, then the only thing that's holding back its release is greed. On one side or another (sitting on fence, carefully not proportioning blame...).

Greed is ugly, and customers don't flock to it. Operators that provide a service and attempt to look after their customers (read: quite a lot of ISPs these days, especially the smaller ADSL ones here) tend to get a lot of repeat revenue and happier customers.

This could be an example of how to put your customers first. There's not really been a chance like this before - the firmware for mobiles is relatively specific for the model. Smartphones change all this. Or they should.

Just my 2p.

I don't think that's the point.

Regardless of the fact that people that went to that conference probably signed NSDs (and don't want to get sued), getting hold of that firmware would leave you where exactly with regards to support?

MS wouldn't want to know - it's not been released. Operator wouldn't want to know - they didn't endorse it. Motorola wouldn't want to know - they've not given the firmware out.

At the end of the day, this has to come from MS, probably with the operators' backing. If I was Gates, I would take this as an opportunity. These SmartPhone upgrades are hardly going to add to MS's corporate coffers in a large degree.

The only thing it would do would be to cast MS in a good light (as far as I can see). The development cost has been absorbed already (the software's done), so there's no outlay for that. The only things that are holding them back are MS's want for payment for the OS (kinda understandable), and the operators not wanting to support a new OS and wanting to shift newer models.
