Mobile Gadget News :: Making Your Mobile Life Simpler _ Other Phone Edition Devices _ My first days with the PPC4100 (Part 2a)

Posted by: reydiodj Jun 18 2004, 11:20 PM

So everyone knows the specs right? If not let's recall a good review done last February by the folks over at http://www.pocketpcreviews.net/reviews/022004/anextek2.htm.

Although the AnexTEK Pocket PC Phone SP230 is in every bit identical to the Audiovox PPC4100, the one big difference is one of the bands it supports. The AnexTEK supports the 900/1800/1900 GSM bands whereas the Audiovox supports the 850/1800/1900 GSM bands.

The next few posts will have some screenshots where I've (hopefully) captured some of the features as part of the ROM unique to this device, this one will have a couple of the About, Memory and Power screens:

Excellent review Rey. I got mine last Friday and I love it. The only drawback that I have been able to find is there are only 2 buttons on the front for the phone and so they cannot be used during game play. : (
Other than that, I am impressed with it and really enjoy it much more than my mpx200.

I've had mine since Friday, and for the most part think it's great.
But...
The lack of a D-pad or other hard buttons makes a lot of apps (ok... games) unusable unless they're stylus-only. I've tried a couple, and most won't even let you use the up/down buttons on the side either. Bit of a drag.
I went to use a headphone for the first time yesterday (had the phone 2 days at this point) - and the cover for the headphone jack was gone - broke off. I hadn't opened it or anything before, it was torn off presumably from putting it in and taking it out of the included belt pouch. Incidentally, the headset I have in the car (it's a 3rd party set that worked with my T720 and MPX200) did not work. I could hear them, but they could not hear me.
Every call I receive triggers an ! icon at the top of the screen, tapping it warns me that "The Incoming Call is a Forwarded Call". The phone status light will continue to blink orange until I clear the warning. Not really a problem, but why is this happening?
Like I said... just a few gripes. Other than the afforementioned - this is a wonderful gadget.

Frankie - Weird thing you are experiencing with the headset and device. I do agree about the headphone cover being funky, I would have preferred it to not have it as many other PPCs/PPCPEs do not have one.

I really wish there was at least one hardware button so that I can activate Voice Command, more on this in another post.

How did you capture screens without a programmable hard button. Most screen capture programs need a hard button to activate capture ?

I may have discovered a bug in my device. The phone doesnt ring although it does receive the call. I may have screwed up the settings.

I've been using the ActiveSync Remote Display that you can download free from MS - funny thing is, the link to it on the PowerToys page seems to be gone now for some reason.
I did find it in their Developer Power Toys page:
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?familyid=74473fd6-1dcc-47aa-ab28-6a2b006edfe9&displaylang=en
Just use ALT+PrtScrn and you have a snapshot.

As for the ring - check in Sounds (Start -> Settings -> Sounds & Notifications -> Notifications [at bottom])... there is a setting for Phone: Incoming Call. I believe it is linked to what you can select at (From the phone display -> Tools -> Options), but check both to make sure that you have a sound that will play, and that the Ring Type is not "None".
Only other thing I can think of to check is making sure sound is on at all - click the speaker icon at the top of the home screen - The system and phone volume levels are there, as well as an On/Vibrate/Off selection - I think this needs to be on even if you select Ring+Vibe from the phone menu.

Have you found out yet how to disable the alert that says: "The incoming call is a forwarded call"? I've been searching everywhere for information about how to disable that annoying message and haven't had any success.

Thanks,
Don

I never figured it out. Bugged the ^*&& out of me too - it would make the orange light on the phone blink for a while making me think I had a voicemail or something.

- you know, I haven't seen that message yet
