Just downloaded the trial and will see how it goes, but conceptually it'll be quite handy. Have an old 2003 device around but can't seem to find out on their website if it's supported. Would be great to use it rather than carrying a separate digital recorder for meeting!

Cheers,

Where is everyone getting their refill cards from? Anyone getting a great deal and not having to pay the face value. Thanks in advance.

Just like smeg, I buy pre-paid sim cards off ebay, tmobile for US and Rogers for Canada. There are different deals going on but I think my last tmobile card was 10-15 bucks. I then charged $100 on it by calling their support since they had a promo for 10% more minutes and the minutes are good for 1 year. It's good for my wife besides her regular business phone and even friends visiting US from other countries. It was easy enough to change area code.

If you use VoIP service like Vonage, you can use call forwarding or ring simultanously to the prepaid number so it won't matter much what the number is. That's what I do with my Rogers sim when I go to Canada. HTH.

I've traveled with my old mpx200 to UK, China and Canada with success using local sims. To see if it's worthwhile, you might need to consider length of stay, availability of GSM network, minutes you need and cost of local sims, etc. and compare that with your tmobile plan. For example, if you are just out there for a few days, not anticipating talking more than a few minutes here and there, then I probably wouldn't worry about it. I don't know Mexico's GSM network and the bands they use, but keep in mind mpx200 is a tri-band. I had great success overseas but was considered somewhat lucky. Do a search on GSM providers in Mexico and see what's available first. Let me know if you have any other specific questions.
HTH.

I carry two, Cingular 2125 for my main cell, and 6315 for my tmo-pre-paid and (when I travel) local sim from Canada half of the time. With Vonage (I have 3 virtual numbers on it, including the business 800 number) forwarding/simul-ring feature, I think I will stick with pre-paid disposable sims in the future, and only use my main cell for contracts so I can get new phones plus data service.

Been thinking about picking up another phone, might go take a look at 8125. Anyone experimented with the dual-sim adapter?

I not only had to adapt my list for WM5, but also the square screen of the 700w as well as the limited RAM it has. Here's the list of installed programs that I can't live without:

-TCPMP-Simply the best media player available
-Mapopolis-A necessity living in Miami
-Total Commander-For any zip folders I might download, and to connect to a FTP server
-Handmark Yahtzee-Amazingly fun game
-Sprite Backup-How can anyone live without it?
-PHM Registry Editor-For when you need to hack the registry
-YanCEyWare Reader-For my church scriptures
-Microsoft Reader-For reading
-June Fabrics PdaNet-To tether my laptop
-Ilium Software eWallet-All my passwords
-DinarSoft MemMaid-Move the temp. internet files to the SD card and clean out the memory
-DinarSoft HandySwitcher-Good task switching utility
-Agile Messenger-AIM, Yahoo, and MSN instant messaging
-SBSH PocketWeather-Living as close to the beach as I do, it's nice to know the weather

And that is my trimmed down list of programs I absolutely must have. I didn't realize it was so long until just now.

Smartphonenotes - Sycn outlook notes
Virtual Earth mobile - Map/direction lookup (much cooler than the Google version)
Pocket Streets - GPS tracking, Map

Smeg, Agile is still not updated for QVGA, right? It looks aweful on my 2125.

I pay $20 for unlimited EDGE/GPRS on Cingular and Tmobile before that. Something like $20-30 is fair for almost everybody. However, I'm looking at the $109 North America package on Cingular now so I can replace my hotel brandband charges in Canada and might even pick up the $139 global package once they lift the stupid 100MB limit. blink.gif Can't wait.

The SDA pricing is pretty decent. I might get buyer's remorse for moving to Cingular for 2125 if SDA comes out sooner. How's Tmo's EDGE service coverage, by the way? (I've only used GPRS on my old ipaq 6315 which was great for overseas travel)

I would suspect the device itself may self identify and give away what class of device it is.

I doubt the device info is passed through HTTP header but will take a look at the TCP/IP packets to make sure. Worst case is just writing another wrapper browser in compact framework, so shouldn't be much trouble at all. I've used my old Tmo ipaq 6315 on Cingular and don't see how a 8215 will be different. (they might have some twisted logic) It's one thing to do it without detection, it's another to be fully legal. Hopefully I can do both with 8215.

Now I just need to figure out of 8215 is actually the device to get!

You can use it with the 2125 as well. I guess Cingular sees a big difference between a Smartphone and a Pocket PC Phone.

I'm wondering if I buy an unlocked 8125 off eBay in a few months, can I still use my $20/month MediaNet on Cingular. I very much doubt Cingular will regulate it to that degree as long as I don't abuse it too much. What do you guys think?

I'm betting they do. Anyone with a 2125 (same phone as the SDA) care to answer? You could also go to a Cingular store and see if the 2125 does. All their predecessors did, and all current WM handsets do, so it would be safe to assume they will.

Sorry, but I don't think so. I looked at the 2125 pretty closely and there's nothing to attach a wrist strap too and also nothing in either the package or manual.
HTH.

Data is important to me, and was the reason I moved from ATT to Tmo last year. I'm on Cingular now because of 2125, but EDGE is good too. On a smartphone like 2125, EDGE speed is all I need for pop mail, browse web, etc. and occasionally upload a few files. If I'm going back to a PDA phone like 8125, then I'd prefer to have faster speed. Just wish it could be on GSM rather than CDMA. I travel outside the country couple of times a month so need to be able to pop in local sims.
Can't seem to find a perfect scenario not involving multiple devices. Oh well.

I guess the first question is what are you using today. I think you mean merging two phones (smartphone or PPC phone) rather than the typical phone/PDA/Mp3 player debate, right? (since you talked about multiple phone numbers, etc)

abatis, have you used one of those twin-SIM adapters? maintaining two numbers is the primary reason I carry two phones (Cingular 2125 and HP 6315) though there are software that runs only on PPC, not smartphone. If twin-SIM works well, I might just pack the 6315 in my laptop bag instead of carrying it.

QUOTE (mar2k @ Jan 30 2006, 09:00 AM)
1) I have the same complaint as everyone else about the power button. Its a crazy design to be so hard to press but I probably won't be turning my phone completely off very often.  When I press the button, the plastic piece (hump cover?) with the ridges that surrounds the power button flexes inward with the pressure needed to turn the unit on and off. The whole things feels solid, but I guess that just worried me because it seems to flex when pressed on the left side. The other/right side does not seem to have that kind of flex.  Is this the case for every unit?

2) Also when I hold the unit and look straight down or from the side in a dark room I can see light leaking from the tiny gaps in the casing.  The network lights also you can see leaking out the side especially in a dark room. Just want to make sure this is normal as well. I guess that worried me since people complained about dust with the SMT5600 getting under the screen.

To answer question 1, I had complained about the power button from day 1 but pretty much got used to it. My theory is that the left side of the hump is hollow behind it and the contact/connector for the power sits somewhat closer to the front of the phone, and the power button just sticks out a bit to make it easier for you to press. In fact, you can power on/off by not touching the power button and just press on the left side of the hump. (the area between left edge and actual power button) The right side of the hump has something behind it so pretty solid. It helps if you have a bit of nail to press the power button "down and towards yourself" (almost a pull) rather than press "back towards the natural curve of the hump"

As for the second question, I haven't really looked that closely and the office here is too bright to test. I bought a screen protector from Boxwave that's really nice for this phone and don't think I will worry about dust too much. As with my other phone, I move on way before they get too dusty - inside.. smile.gif

And that is what i am questioning to do. I dont feel the need to go to 2005 when i am content with 2003. But would i have to go to 2005 to get that layout?
*

This is the default view of applications on WM5 and if you upgrade based on the instructions on this site, you will get that look without anything extra. I'm not sure if/how you can get this view on the 2003. Personally I actually don't mind the listing of applications on 2003 since you can organize your folders and press number keys to launch app/navigate folders. In the new WM5 icon view, you can only navigate using the directional pad or press the first letter of the program/folder name which is not as convenient as pressing numbers. The icon view does look slick though. smile.gif

Couple of comments on WM5.
- Windows media player 10 is included, which makes syncing with your PC easier;
- Messaging seems to be more flexible and it's very easy to setup multiple IMAP/Pop accounts and check mails
- Typing email and sms is easier due to some usability enhancemnts like the small pop-ups for add word as you type and switching between t9/abc/123 is more convenient than 2003.
- I used to use something like Photo Contact (?) to link photos to my contacts. Now it's all build in so when you receive calls or read sms/emails, your contacts' photos are showing up automatically. A lot more convenient than running a 3rd party app.

I'm sure there are other things I like but I just don't remember my mpx200 with 2003 much. I will take a look when I get home and see if there's any other comparisons I can provide. HTH.

Well, I guess I'll have a chance to try out the 700w, at very least the PPC side of it.  I just won this auction on ebay.  The seller says it can't be activated because it doesn't have an ESN, but I'm thinking it doesn't have the paper with the ESN on it.  There is a chance I can find the ESN through the software.  Anyone with a 700w, can you find the ESN by dialing **772?  Any other method to find the ESN?  I'll see when it arrives.  Here's to hoping.

Thinkpad X41 is probably hands down the best mainstream tablet out there. Very light weight, too though generally speaking a bit pricey compared with consumer brands like Toshiba. One of my clients also uses HP's tablet pcs and I believe the Compaq model can be taken apart so you can use it as an even lighter weight slate. (that one is actually on my shopping list too) I looked at the Gateway and Toshiba models available in retail stores like BB or CompUSA and they are all fairly generic.

However, these are not great PCs to play video games on, or more accurately, not great for playing half life 2 -level games. If that's important to you, you might consider moving away from tablet to more of a desktop-replacement laptop like your old 9300.

Just my .02.

Stick with i730 is my vote. Treo 700 has a nice form factor and feels solid, but screen resolution is not too good when you consider even 2125 can do 240x320. xv6700 is slightly bigger and overkill for the things you want to do. I'm not sure why I'm not warming up to Q, but it feels fragile and I also don't like the screen much. (on my flight last night, my seatmate was an Arab techie with a Q and he certainly appreciate my knowledge of what he was trying to show off, not that my 2125 and Zen Vision are inferior gadgets. smile.gif )

For the small incremental benefits you might get out of any of the 3 buy options, I don't think they are worth the money. Of course, if you are unloading the 730 cheap, then I guess I can support any of them!

Cheers,
Steve

Cingular's website says 4 hours of talk time or 6 days of standby time.  This has not been my experience!  If you plan on getting this phone, better plan on charging it up every 2 to 3 days!

If I didn't love everything else about this phone, I'd probably have to exchange it for something else.  But it's just so damn cool otherwise!
*

I think we should always treat the estimated battery life with a grain of salt as they are probably measuring without using BT, EDGE/GPRS at all, lowest setting on power and backlight, etc. and then exaggerate a bit on top of this. My experience with 2125 is quite positive on the battery life. For a quick weekend trip recently, I didn't bring my laptop or charger so just turned off the phone for a few hours overnight, and use the phone quite a bit during the day with plenty of camera usage including video and by the time we got back, I still have about 30% left. This is quite acceptable and with the ease of USB charging, why not charge everyday?

Sean,
As a person who wanted to help but wasn't able to do much due to various obligations, I totally understand your reasoning for the move. All good things come to an end and who knows, maybe we will get someone as good to buy this site out. Thanks for starting the original mpx200.org and poured tons of energy and resource into this and hope everyone will stick around for the long run.
Good luck on the sale.

I know, I know. Well, I like the conveniece of rolling out of bed and walk across the street to the office in no more than 2 minutes. tongue.gif Almost all decent downdown hotels charge $12-15 a night for Internet connection and once you go, say, 10 blocks out, you will get complimentary Internet but I don't want to struggle my way back and forth with a heavy laptop bag in the cold Toronto weather.. (not that Toronto's that cold, actually)

abatis, thanks for the headsup. I'll be on it if it's priced reasonable. I looked at Rogers' so-called unlimited wireless internet plan and it's laughable. Cost is $100 a month and they said any usage over 250MB a month is considered 'abusive'. I can easily use 10 times of that! Hopefully Bell will be a lot more reasonable.

Thanks.

That is the same deal as my i730 though.  It came with the BT and USB modem functions disabled.  Luckily, there are really good hacks out there to enable both.  I'm sure the same will happen for the 700w.  The only issue I have is that the BT modem function doesn't have a fast enough transfer speed to keep up with the EVDO speeds.  I end up using USB most of the time because of that.
*

That's cool you are saturating the BT connection. I would've switched to Verizon if EVDO is included in Canada. Both Cingular and Verizon charges data roaming for EVDO/EDGE based on usage which totally suck. I spend about 10 nights a month in Canada and been paying 13-15 bucks a day for hotel connection. Would jump on anything close to Verizon's $59.99 unlimited laptop data program there but nothing so far.

Guess it's just a matter of time..
