i got one last Friday and i must say i'm very impressed with it's size and sound loudness/quality. i'm using with my Sprint Touch and Touch Cruise and - so far - it's working well. (thank goodness for wifey's discount; i'm not sure i would have purchased it otherwise).

my verizon contract is up at the end of this month and i've got my sights on this puppy.... the 256MB ROM/128 MB RAM and the faster processor will certainly be an improvement over the GSM version. my one disappointment is the absence of GPS. in the last year i've gotten very accustomed to using the GPS on my Trinity (TomTom) and my Kaiser (iGO). i was hoping the Sprint Touch had GPS so i could sell my Trinityh. Smeg, does Sprint have reasonable data plans?

i'm a little disappointed that the HTC Vogue is not on this list... on the other hand, if the 5800 is small enough (by my standards) i might go for that phone.

hi angela - did you allow the phone to fully charge before turning it on? i had this happen once; i left the phone on the charger for 8 hours (with the phone off of course), unplugged it and it came on... if that doesn't work, i'd take it back to Verizon for a replacement..

man, that puppy looks very nice and has killer features. my main worry is battery life... i don't know that i can hold out for the i600; i'm thinking about getting an i320n (square version) to replace my QTek 9100 (stolen at a security check point in Mexico). since i've been using the Q, i'm leaning toward "another" smartphone with a QWERTY keypad (GMS version).

i honestly don't recall how i did it. when i find my backup copies, i'll look at the XML to see if there's something special going on. when i applied the Q software update i forgot to backup up my home screens.

my cingular contact suggested the same time frame that abatis mentioned; late 2006 or early 2007. i plan to use my wife's corporate discount to buy one, get it unlocked and use on T-Mobile. :-)

i ordered the Vitelino azabache (black) with matching interior color. i did not include a clip; i usually carry the phone in my pants pocket or my jacket when i'm wearing a suit. i considered other colors, but settled on azabache becuase its more conservative. the picture below is from the Vaja website:

once i get it, i will use leather softner to round-off any square edges. in my opinion, this gives a more form-fitting appearance. given the Q's thin profile, this should look very good on the phone. now all i need is thin profile mugen battery with more capacity. otherwise, i'll end up having to purchase another case for the extended battery. (i wonder what Moto was thinking when they listed "192 hr" stand-by time???)

i'd rem-out the Fizz plugin to see if that's the problem; or in other words, keep the Fizz plugin from loading. it could be that the plugin doesn't support font-size and font-weight.

hummmmm... smeg - are you using a XML editor that allows you to validate the XML code? i'm using a tool called XML Writer that validates the code before copying to the phone. generally, this catches any coding errors. if you look in the lower right hand corner of the pic below, you'll notice the the "Profile" is listed in a smaller font. although my font is smaller you should be able to increase the font size on your screen.... in the second picture you can see how i decreased the font size for the "missed calls" then increased it for the "mail line"...

i usually add "font-size=x" and/or font-weight="500" to each plugin where i want to increase the size and increase boldness. the larger the number (in font weight) the more bold it appears. here's an example for my MRU plugin:

<plugin clsid="{79EFB752-CB70-446d-B317-499723482B3D}" name="startmru" height="36">
<mru max-buttons="9" icon-size="16" halign="left" x="4" y="3"/>
<background bgcolor="transparent"/>
<appname halign="left" y="20" fgcolor="COLOR_HOMETEXT" font-weight="500" font-size="14"/>
</plugin>

here's an example for the carrier:
<!--Carrier-->
<plugin clsid="{E09043DF-510E-4841-B652-388316977A7A}" name="carrier" height="19">
<label>
<text x="1" halign="right" y="0" font-size="16" font-weight="600">
<carrier/>
</text>
</label>
</plugin>

smeg - have you eperienced decent battery life? it seems as if the Q suffers the same "low-signal-drain-your-battery" problem similar to GSM phones... i started with a full battery at 8 am and by 3 pm, i was down to 25%. i was in an all day meeting where signal strength (as indicated on the phone) was 1 bar or no bar. other activity included 15 minutes of calls and about 75 emails. also, have you noticed that the phone appears to operate at a warmer temp with the extended battery.

EDIT: (6/5, 7:38 PM) right after i posted this message, i turned my phone off and left it off for 1 hour. i turned it back on and the power meter read 50%, so now i'm not sure what's going on! the phone's been on (not charging) for 2 hours and it's still at 50%.

QUOTE (Paris @ Jun 4 2006, 09:30 PM) *
It'd be nice if it had some reception!! Ever since Cingular took over and ruined everything, my 200 has no reception in San Antonio. Any one know of a side-by-side between the Q and the 700w? I'm getting one of them on my birthday in August, but most importantly, I'm dumping Cingular for Verizon! My eyes are failing me in my old age, so the larger, albeit less sharp screen of the 700w seems like a better choice for us aging baby boomers who are starting to use 2.00+ reading glasses!

well, coming from a person using 1.50+ reading glasses, i can tell you that 700w will have larger text. the Q will have smaller text, but it's very crisp and (for me) easy to read. i started with the 700w, but the memory issues (32 meg vs 64 meg on the Q) and other phone related issues resulted in me trading it in. some of the problems i had may have been addressed with the recent ROM upgrade. oh yeah, i use my 200 on T-Mobile and have very few reception issues.

MPx200 lasted me 4 years. Lets see the longevity for a change.

..you mean 2+ years, right? the MPx200 was first introduced in 2003. anyway, i still have mine, too. i take it with me when i'm working out,jogging or doing something that puts my other phones at risk. despite its slowness (relative to today's phones) the 200 is a "classic"; it's very professional looking and easy to use. it would have been nice if it had bluetooth.

given my past Moto experiences, i'm about as skeptical of Moto's smartphone making ability as anyone. however, from a smartphone perspective, the Q (so far) is working very well. form factor is a big plus, the scroll wheel can be iffy sometimes but it's definitely a plus (could be me getting accustomed to it). the Q is much more responsive that the 200, 220, and the audiovox 5600 that i've used in the past. the sound quality - especially incoming call quality - is much improved. it's on par with the Treo 700w - in my opinion, that device had the best call quality. on the other hand, the keyboard is somewhat cramped for my liking. nonetheless, i'll take it over T9 on other smartphone devices: it's much easier to type.

i have to get used to the "missing" features that are common with my Qtek 9100 and (T-Mo) and my 6700 such as touch screen and the larger keyboard. so far all is well...if at the end of 2 weeks i don't encounter "major" issues, i'll likely purchase the phone since i'm already on VZW (via my company). another compelling factor is that i'll pay $150 for the phone with my VZW corp discount and my company picking up the balance.

for those doing the "14-day" test, i'll be interested to hear your reasons for NOT keeping the phone. I'll be sure to post my thoughts if i send it back.

i picked up a "Q" today to test for 2 weeks. if i'm satisfied, i'll use my corporate discount to purhase the phone (for $150) and sell my 2 month old 6700. i must admit that the form factor and screen are impressive. phone call quality - compared to Moto's last wanna-be smartphone (MPx220) - is also good. in my opinion, it compares favorably to the Treo 700w.

Smeg - what's the specs on the extended battery?

time to test....
