A hard reset may be in order. It will clear everything on the phone, so if it i a software glich, this will fix it. Read here for instructions on how to hard reset. If the problem persists after that it is either a network problem or hardware problem with the phone.

If it is still there after a hard reset and even a ROM flash, it is most definitely either a hardware problem or a service problem. The SIM could be seated wrong. If the SIM tabs are broken off you would need to wedge a piece of paper between the battery and SIM to hold it down against the contacts.

Very erratic behavior. There seems to be no pattern to use to discern the problem, but the more I read the more I think it is some kind of combination problem of the network with the hardware. Both seem to work fine separate from each other, so that's the only explanation I can come up with.
