Sweet, weather, eBay, and traffic are all things I can see myself doing. How do you review PPTs? Is there a mobile office app you can get for the SMT5600?

Thanks,

I have a prob with Gmail in that when I have a very large message (video or something) it will hang. I've set my SMT5600 to only take the first 5000 bytes of a message but this problem persists. It's really annoying! Any ideas?

Thanks,

Just curious how you all use your phones. I use the PIM functions and email mostly, but I was wondering what other cool things can be done. Feel free to share! I'll start things off:

1. PIM
2. Email
3. Web browsing

Short list I know...hence my desire to see how you all use it so my list can grow.

QUOTE (sonik @ Oct 6 2004, 10:00 PM)
Guess wat, I just tried to put a brand new spanking SIM into the phone that I just got with a new service plan it it works just fine.  The new line is identical to the one that I have been using.  I DID NOT change any setting on the phone except swapping the SIM and Wahhhlaaaa it works.  That's it for now.  Good luck to all..
*

Back from the dead... Reason I did so is because the settings in the FAQ worked for me, but only when I UN-ticked the 'automatically detect settings' in IE. The FAQ states to tick this setting, and it wasn't working so I toyed around and UN-ticking did the trick.

Thanks,

I'll join in on the intros for a few reasons:

1. I've been here on and off for over a year.
2. I too am named 'Sean' and yes, I spell it right - no 'Shauwn' nonsense biggrin.gif
3. My B-Day is May 25, and the 'Sean' running the site is only a few days off from me according to the homepage post.

Who is Illah?

First of all I'm from Chicago, ILLAHnoise. Why Illah? Well, the b-boy/raver/hip-hop culture used to use the word 'ill' alot (think Beastie Boys) so I thought that was cool. Since the old three-letter abbreviation for 'Illinois' was 'Ill', well, you get the picture.

So now I live in San Francisco. I came out here for film school but ended up in the dot.com industry (surprise). Unlike the no-skills-but-hired-in-desperation folks of 99-01, I am lucky enough to have some good tech knowledge, however I didn't want to be pigeon-holed into a 'techie' so I moved my way over to online marketing. I think I've found my niche, and I'm planning an MBA in E-Commerce within the next year. I love the internet and tech, but I don't want to be the high tech equivalent of a car mechanic, i.e. IT guy, SysAdmin, etc. (no offense to those who are!).

What are my aspirations? C-level executive. Like I said earlier, I came out here for film school and now I work in online marketing at one of the largest ad agencies in the world. Put the two together, add in an Ivy league MBA (cross your fingers I get in, and my 97th percentile GMAT score with a perfect 6/6 writing score should help), and you got yourself a damn unique package. Most folks are either all biz or all creative - I aim to bridge that gap and I hope it will have me running one of these places - perhaps my own wink.gif - in the next decade or so.

Why Smartphones?

As you can imagine business was my main drive. I used to have a Clie, but quickly realized a fat PDA and a cell wasn't very useful. Only 6 months later I got an MPx200, and now I run an SMT5600. I first got into these things as an organizer, but as a film student with a BFA customization also appealed to me. I actually hardly, if ever, use the multimedia features, but skins and internet are my main non-PDA uses for my phone.

So is Illah a corporate whore?

Despite my aspirations I did go through film school after all smile.gif Believe it or not, I was expelled from high school and spent many years with one foot in jail. I used to be a lifestyle raver, meaning I didn't just go to parties, I LIVED that stuff. In fact, I learned the business essential of 'buy low, sell high' at raves, if you know what I mean wink.gif

To this day I'm an avid electronic music fan. My last vacation was to Miami for the Winter Music Conference 2005 and Miami Fashion Week in late March. In seven days I went to probably nine parties. My fiance is a BFA in Fashion Merchandising and she to was a 'bad girl' turned good (in fact, we've known each other since we were 15, how romantic). We have a yellow lab named 'Arf'. Why 'Arf'? Because we didn't know what to name her, so we called her 'Arf' in the interim, and the name stuck. In some ways we're quite the hippie couple, and in other ways quite the yuppie couple.

Hobbies

I'm a hardcore overclocker nerd. I've had multiple watercooled systems, including a 4' evaporative cooling tower (bong), radiated systems, etc. I've also had many air cooled systems. I'm so into this hobby, there was a short time when I had the fastest AMD based system in terms of SETI work unit crunching times on the OC-Forums.com SETI team.

I'm also a home theater nerd. I don't have the cash for a super-high-end system, but I have a complete Infinity reference 5 speaker system with a Dayton Audio 10" sub and a Marantz 650W receiver, 1080i upscaling DVD player, and a 43" HDTV. I also have a sweet system in our car, with a Pioneer DEH-8300 MP3 player flip-face deck, Kicker Resolution 2-way comps for mids and highs with a 250W MTX amp behind them, and two 10" Infinity Perfect subs with an 800W Lanzar amp behind them.

As for movies, here are my favorites:

Raging Bull
Taxi Driver
Goodfellas (as you can see, I like Scorsese)
The Shining
Saving Private Ryan
Pi
Trainspotting
KIDS
LOTR Trilogy

Last but not least I do put my film schooling to work. I freelance and have a website where you can check out some of my work (though I need to update it, I've done a couple projects since the last major update in April). One cool thing about my site is it is ALL me. In other words, every photo, graphic, word, video, and line of code is my work.

Slightly off topic, but I have T-Mobile and the phone always says 'Cingular'. I know I'm not using them though because all my T-Mobile settings work and whatnot. Ideas?

I was thinking the same thing Gryphon. So maybe a better solution would be to ask the internet community to test for me. I'd say it's safe to assume everyone who got T-Mobile within the last 6 months would have the 'latest' SIM. While the geographies and whatnot would change, at least it would give us some insight. Any new T-Mobile users out there that want to give it a shot?

I specifically mentioned to the rep about 32K and 64K in regard to data transfer speeds, and made it clear I was talking about internet access speed, and he said that I was correct. So is he just an idiot? smile.gif

You know, I just tested a few more times and averaged more like 20 kbps, not 30. Then I checked the average field...T-Mobile averages 45 kbps with nearly 4500 samples. Funny how if there ARE 32K and 64K SIMs, 45K is nearly dead center...

EDIT: I just called T-Mobile and older cards are only capable of 32K while newer ones can do 64K! If anyone is like me and has had the same SIM for years it might be worth heading a T-Mobile store and getting a new SIM. Apparently this is only like $20.

Yeah, it's looking like it's the proprietary C500 plugins that I'm missing. Is there any way to get those on an SMT5600?

I got a ton of skins from Modaco and CoolSmartPhone and have tried to install them. Many don't work! For example, the Alienware skin and Mac skin. Both were intended for the C500, which is the UK SMT5600, so I don't understand why they're not working. The main problem is the homescreen. The colors change, menus are customized, but the homescreen never works.

My old skin from my MPx200 (Crokette Espace) works fine on the SMT5600, as well as some other 'simpler' skins. It's only the 'fancy' CAB skins that seem to screw with me. Before you ask I've triple checked my install and have followed the instructions to the tee.

Thanks,

OK, I figured out most of my issues (spoke too soon!). Now my problem is how do I save received messages in my smartphone outlook? After a send/received all my recieved messages were removed! Also is it possible to save messages to the storage card?

Thanks!

Is it just me or does this feature only work half the time? All my other T-Zones stuff works flawlessly, but the email is just unstable. I've tested it and it has worked both inbound and outbound, which leads me to belive my config is solid, but half the time it fails on me. I'm using G-Mail through T-Zones on an SMT5600.

Also does anyone know a way to send the email though Outlook on the phone instead of using the T-Zones WAP site? Would T-Zones pro enable this feature?

Thanks,

Your speeds should be right around dial up speeds, or just a bit slower.
On your phone, goto http://www.dslreports.com/mspeed, and run a speed test on your phone then let us know what you come up with.
*

I averaged around 30kbps on that site. I heard the new SIM's are 64kbps up from the previous 32...a speed which I seemed to top out at. What kind of speed do you see?

Thanks,

I read somewhere that the speed of the internet connection on a phone was dictated by the SIM card. I've been using the same old SIM for years now, so I imagine mine is pretty slow...if this is true (or is all mobile internet just super slow?). If it IS true, would there be any way to get a new, faster SIM from T-Mobile without disrupting my service? My current internet connection is VERY slow, even on text-only WAP sites.

Thanks,

I'm a former Moto user and with the MPx220/200 there are dozens of ROMs to choose from, but a search here on the forums and on Google seems to indicate that there aren't any upgrades for the SMT5600? Is that correct? If so what kind of tweaks are there? I found Gryphon's post about removing the AT&T branding and switching it over to T-Mobile, but I'm just wondering if there's any other cool things to do with it.

I'm pretty familiar with the idea of changing homescreens and whatnot from my MPx200 BTW, so I already know that one.

Thanks,

You guys are overcomplicating things - Radio Shack has these adapters for like $2. Look for 'sub-mini to mini' adapter. If you can solder you can build your own for fifty cents.

I took my MPx220 to be unlocked and at the time it wasn't asking for a network PUK. The guy at the shop must have typo'ed the unlocking code because it started to ask for a Network PUK when he tried to unlock it. So now I have the subsidy unlock code, but I can't get through the PUK. According to the cell shop guy if I call up AT&T (the network it's locked to) they can give me the PUK, but I'd need an AT&T SIM to do so...does that sound feasable? I just borrowed a friends info and talked to AT&T but they said they couldn't do it and it was SIM based, meaning I would need to call T-Mobile (I don't know if they were just avoiding the issue though).

Any ideas???

Thanks,

So another question - will connecting via bluetooth be the same as connecting via cable, i.e. sync, file transfer, web though phone, etc? Could I flash the phone though bluetooth?

Thanks,

Is there any difference in name brand ones and cheap generic ones? I don't really care about range, it's not like I'm going to want to sync from across my office or home, I'll be within a few feet of the machine.

Thanks,

QUOTE (JamesV @ May 5 2005, 12:57 AM)
Here's an RF radiation paranoia question.  The 5600 and the c500 have different SAR ratings even though they are essentially the same phone.  Is this just due to a difference in measurements by the FCC and their European counterparts, or could there really be a difference resulting from the fact that one uses the 850mHz band and the other the 900 band.  The 5600 is rated at .61 w/kg and the c500 is rated at .297 w/kg.

Just curious.
*

I don't know the answer to your question, but I'm only talking on the phone like 15 minutes a day - it's all the PDA functions that make smarphones indispensable for me!

I'll check out those phones you guys recommended - under $200 is definetely a number I'm comfortable with...esp considering I can prob sell my MPx200 for at least $100 so I'd only be spending a net $100 or less biggrin.gif
