Yachtzee is a game I would guess just about everyone in the free world has played at least once. It's a game of luck and chance, but a game that can feed an addiction. It is tough to walk away because just one more roll can put your score over the top. Alert Technologies has produced Yachtzee for the SmartPhone platform for your own portable addiction.

Here is what Alert Technologies has to say about Yachtzee:

QUOTE
Yachtzee

The "Game of Yacht" or known today as Yachtzee originated from a dice game played on a yacht. Yachtzee is a very addictive and fun game to play! Now you can take Yachtzee anywhere on your Pocket PC. You can play up to 8 players on Yachtzee. The animations are stunning. As you roll the dice, the dice sweep across the score sheet into their perspective slots and reveal their face values. If you haven't played Yachtzee, don't worry because we included the rules in detail, which is easily accessible from the main menu. Once you start playing Yachtzee, you'll never want to stop. Highscores are kept so you can compete against you previous scores. Dazzling graphics and awesome sound packed into one small exe. You won't find that anywhere else!

Features:
  • Play with up to 8 players!

  • Undo - If you accidentally placed on the wrong score, you can undo!

  • Score Board - You can see all the players' scores at once at anytime!

  • Number of Turns - You can see the number of turns per game.

  • Options - You can control animations, sounds, and hold style.

  • Stunning Graphics and Awesome Sounds!

  • High Scores - Up to 10 high scores are saved so you can compete with your best out of 10.

When you start up the game you get a nice ABOUT screen. Pressing a key on your phone takes you to the Yatchzee board.

Here is the main menu (In red on the bottom left):

And these are the 4 screens you can get to from the main menu (Options, Scores, Rules and About). The Rules page scrolls down to display text rules.

When you start a new game you have a fresh board. Notice the Roll 'em Dice on the right? The roll button is below that. Use the control stick to navigate to the button and press it.

When the dice stop rolling you will see them on the right. The game actually helps you figure out where the roll will fit by changing the scores to reflect what they could be if you decided to record your roll on that particular line. Notice there are also scores in blue? Those are the lines which are already scored or automatically scored by the game.

In order to get the best "hand" to score you have three rolls. In between each roll you can select which dice to hold. Notice the numbers next to the dice? Press the number next to the dice you want to hold and a blue HOLD label appears next to those dice. The next time you roll those dice won't change.

Of course the ultimate goal is to get all 5 dice the same, which is a Yachtzee! But as you continue to play you will have to make choices as to which line to score a particular hand. Choose wrong and you limit your final score potential. Choose wisely and you can get your score high enough to bump off your buddy's score.

After every line has been chosen, whether or not the score actually had any value, the game is over.

When you exit the game it will remember the name(s) you used if you want it to. And of course, are you sure you want to quit?

So Alert Technologies remake of Yatchzee is very much like the original box of 5 dice, a cup and a score pad. Only now you can have it with you wherever you go. This little game will probably be one of the more played games on my phone. And the multi-player option adds a really nice ability to share the fun while not being left out. This game is one of those must consider games.

You can pick up your own copy of Yatchzee here.
