AT&T Branded STM 5600 unlocked beautifully. Now I can switch over the Cingular and "Rollover" without getting a new (ie, expensive) phone.

Has anyone "unlocked" an AT&T branded STM 5600 using this?

The "beta" product that was put out several months ago, didnt work with the STM 5600. Thanks.

Dont think that Real has made a RealPlayer for Smartphones yet...., so as far as I know, you can. (Anyone else know any better?)

You need to set the Network selection to "Manual", and then select 34010 (or something like that), when you get a list of appilcable networks, to be able to use the Cingular network, with that AT&T SIM.

If you dont, you are only using AT&T's tower, as far as I can tell.

You guys think that Cingular/Westek is:

a) Using some kind of IMEI calculator that applies to all STM 5600's or

cool.gif They dumped the entire IMEI database of AT&T STM 5600's into that "checker"?

Either way, I got mine biggrin.gif

Anyone think that they MIGHT upgrade the MPx220 to Windows Mobile 2005? Could that be what the new ROM upgrade is all about?

JamesV,

Probably the reason the "phone" portion of your iMate Jam sucks is the following from the specs (taken off J&R's web site):

triband 900/1800/1900 MHz

ie, NO 850 Mhz band.

In the US, you gotta have that 850 Mhz band, to get decent reception (guys, correct me if I am wrong).

Um, I am glad that the STM 5600 is back on the market, but at THAT price, its nothing to get excited about......

$249 = RipOff

I got my STM 5600 off Amazon (via AT&T) for $150, minus $150 rebate = FREE.

For $250, plus the data plan, I would get the MPx220 or a Treo/PocketPC Phone.

Dont get me wrong, I love my STM 5600, and my MPx220, but only at the price I paid for them (Free and $25 respectively). biggrin.gif

Ok, to hard reset the phone, hold down the BLUE button on the "D-Pad", and then turn the phone on.

Recommendation: Before you do that, go to ActiveSync, and from the "Add/Remove Programs" option, deinstall all the programs that you have installed in the phone ONLY.

Then after you do the hard reset, you can simply do a one click reinstall of all the programs you had installed earlier.

Ok, looks like I have some major data/PocketOutlook corruption happening on my phone, since now I cannot launch either my Calendar, Contacts, or Call History.

If I select either my Calendar, Contacts, or Call History, nothing happens (seems like something "launches", but nothing comes up on the screen.

When I call the phone, it doesnt flash the "name" of the number that is calling (ie, that I had entered into my contacts), just the number.

I cannot add (since I cannot access) any contact/calendar info.

I think that the "Outlook" data file is corrupted, or something like that. When I go to "Sync" the phone, ActiveSync only "sees" the "Inbox" and syncs that ONLY. Calendar/Contacts etc, dont show up in Activesync any more.....

IF I have to, I will do a Master Reset on the phone, but that means I have to reload ALL my applications, and all my settings which is a pain etc.

Any suggestions??

If you put the phone into flight mode, and then turn flight mode off again, many a time, it will also turn on bluetooth automatically.

Was looking to get a phone for my wife, and was thinking of another STM 5600 from AT&T, via Amazon (links on this site etc).

But Amazon is listing it as unavailable.....

Think its not going to be sold in the US any more, officially anyway, as far as I can tell since Amazon was the only legit place I knew that sold it for "AT&T".

Anyone know what the settings are to get this to work with a STM 5600, running on AT&T? Would it all be the same, since Cingular owns AT&T?

krelvinaz,

Do you or anyone else know the settings/setup to tether the STM 5600 to the phone as a "wireless modem"?

I have the settings for my MPx220, but not my new STM 5600. If anyone can point me to the procedure, that would be great.

I also just upgraded my "work" STM 5600 to the unlimited mMode plan, for $24.99 a month via AT&T.

The interesting this is that "AT&T" wanted to charge me $29.99 for "The 10 MB data plan". As near as I can tell, I am paying $24.99 for "unlimited" instead of $29.99 for 10MB.

Does this make sense to anyone? (The first rep I talked to said that the unlimited was $49 or $79, but then when I called back, I was told that that only applied to "data phones" like the Blackberry). Guess the STM 5600 doesnt qualify as a "data phone"?

Also, now that I have unlimited mMode, does someone have the settings for AT&T/the STM 5600 so that I can use the phone via the USB/Bluetooth connection as a "Wireless Modem", and basically use it to connect to the Internet via the GRPS network? Thanks.

Well, like many of you, I got my MPx220 on Black Friday, from Best Buy. Went thru the whole Cingular XBM (Exchange By Mail) experience to get myself an UNLOCKED 1.3 ROM MPx220. And I have had my new updated phone now for over a month, and have a 256 MB miniSD card in it. And am using it with a Motorola HS 801 Bluetooth headset.

Since I took up a job last month, I was asked to get a seperate cell phone for "company use" (ie, where customers, employees etc can reach me on the road). Now I carry enough ****, and already have a PocketPC, and had heard many good things about the STM 5600, and I wanted a small phone to carry about, I took the plunge and ordered the STM 5600 from Amazon (with "AT&T" Wireless branding and service).

It arrived about a week ago, and I have had the chance to use both and thought that it would be useful for members to understand the comparisions of the two, BOTH of which I use every day (almost every hour).

SIZE: The first thing to keep in mind is that the MPx220 is a flip-phone, and the STM 5600 is a "candy bar" (like most Nokia's) phone. When the MPx220 is closed, it is slightly smaller in length than the STM 5600 (about 3mm or so), but is 2-3mm thicker than the STM 5600. So if you like/want/need to put the phone in a pant pocket etc, then the STM 5600 "wins". The STM 5600 comes with a side clip on carrying case (which is what I am using to carry it), which requires you to take it out of the case to answer the phone. I am using a modified Motorola StarTAC case for my MPx220 (cost me $2.99), and it works great (clips to my belt, and I can answer/use the phone without taking it out of the case).

WEIGHT: They both weigh about the same, as far as I can tell, so keeping either in a jacket pocket are no problem.

DESIGN/FEATURES: This breaks down into Hardware and Software....

Software: Based on the software that is included with the phone, the STM 5600 "wins" that contest. The OEM, HTC, has included a good deal of "better" phone/call/photo management software built into the phone, with slightly better interfaces than the MPx220. And of course, the STM 5600 has Windows Media Player 10 built in, vs Windows Media 9 for the MPx220.

Hardware: Here, in MY opinion, as a "SmartPhone" the MPx220 wins out over the STM 5600. The STM 5600 does have a slightly bigger screen than the MPx220, but the STM 5600 screen has 64k colors vs 256k colors for the MPx220.

The reason that I say that I prefer the MPx220 over the STM 5600 as a "SmartPhone" is that in MY opinion & experience, its far easier to operate the MPx220 and select from all the options that are available using the Motorola "D-Pad" (or whatever its called), than to use the selector/toggle bar on the STM 5600, and the "small" selector keys on the STM 5600. The keys on the STM 5600 are smaller than on the MPx220, and are "bunched" closer together (and more towards the end of the phone) than those of the MPx220. In my opinion, the "interface" (keypad + navigation buttons) of the STM 5600 is almost "too small" for me to use as comfortably has I have been able to use my MPx220.

And in MY opinion, with the 1.3 ROM, the camera on the MPx220 is better than the camera on the STM 5600, in features (1.2 MP for the MPx220 vs 0.31 MP for the STM 5600) and in MY opinion, its easier to use the camera on the MPx220 due to the "flip" design of the MPx220 which means that I can hold the bottom half at an angle while "aiming" the top half of the MPX (which houses the camera, and the "flash").

and the last thing to consider is the CARRIER:

Default to the MPx220 is Cingular, which has "Rollover" minutes, AND who will unlock the phone (if you get a locked one) for its customers (if you need to use it overseas).

Default to the STM 5600 is "AT&T Wireless", who even though they are owned by Cingular, still are apparently governed by the same **** rules that made AT&T Wireless loose customers. "AT&T" has no rollover minutes, AND will catagorically not unlock the phone for you (they pointed me to a section in the "AT&T" service agreement, that says that the phone can/will only be used on their network. You can get the STM 5600 unlocked, but you will pay $40 for the privilage.

In summary, in MY opinion, the MPx220 wins overall over the STM 5600, but the STM 5600 is a nice phone for those who dont mind its small interface.

Anything else that I have left out, or if anyone has any questions, feel free to ask.

Ok, I got officially notified today by "AT&T" (even though the idiots are owned by Cingular) that according to "AT&T's" rules and service agreement, they will not unlock my STM 5600 (or any phone), and that even if I switch to a Cingular service number, they wont unlock the phone to work with the Cingular service.

But I am going to get it unlocked, and switch to Cingular, even if I have to pay $40 to get it unlocked.

Yes, as long as the phone is UNLOCKED. My MPx220 came unlocked, but I hear that the newer ones are coming locked.

Just got my STM 5600 today and had two questions: (This is an AT&T branded phone, with AT&T service)

a) Anyone know how to turn Cleartype off on the 5600? I cant find an option to do so.

cool.gif It comes SIM locked. I know that one can pay $40 to someone on the web to get it unlocked, but has anyone tried emailing Cingular at simunlockcode@cingular.com, and asking them for the unlock code (I am still a paying customer, and dont want switch to Tmobile etc).

Aaah. I was just coming to this forum to post a message asking anyone if they knew about why I received this HS810 headset. I knew it must have something to do with my MPx220, but had totally forgotten about registering to get the headset.

And now to my delight, I have a 2nd Bluetooth headset to go with the new Audiovox STM 5600 that I got as my 2nd (work) phone. (I bought a HS801, when I got the MPx220)

I am a bit disappointed that it didnt come with its own charger, but since I have the charger for both the MPx220 AND the HS801, I really cant complain.

I got an MPx220 for my personal use, on Black Friday. So far, I am very happy with it overall.

Having just changed jobs, the company has told me to get a 2nd phone, dedicated to my work only. Now that I have been hooked on WindowsMobile 2003, I am not going to get anything else.

So the question is, what WindowsMobile 2003 phone do I get? Get a 2nd MPx220, or should I get an Audiovox SMT5600 Smartphone which it seems like a lot of folks like.

It might be nice to get the two leading SmartPhones out there, so please let me know any recommendations other than the two that I have mentioned.

Also, since it seems that many of the folks bought their 5600 from Amazon, any comments on the deals they have, and how the AT&T Customer Service has been to deal with?
