Trying to hang onto my $500 investment for at least another year or two (purchased 9/'04).

In that regard, any references, specific suggestions, etc. on how I can "tune-up" my 6315 (i.e., restore/improve the performance) would be greatly appreciated (probably by others also).

Undesirable symptoms that have developed include slow response time; e.g., switching from the phone pad screen to the call history screen takes on average 5 to 10 seconds - other operations are similarly slow - also am experiencing daily lock-ups (including during calls!) requiring the infamous soft reset - have 7.84M storage and 16.91M program at the moment - moved non-essential add-on programs to storgae card a while ago - only thing done relatively recent to problem developing/getting worse (although not immediately afterward, but weeks later) was installing Netfront 3.3. browser (which works pretty well) - is my phone just on its last leg?

Am thinking may need to back-up to PC and then hard reset, upload back-up and reinstall programs - time-consuming and aggravating - hope there are other less significant options.

(Anyone think the "Wing" is a viable replacement? <the cost is just as bad>)

Thanks for responses

Thanks - that helped to resolve it - it seems quite simple in hindsight, but I haven't had the opportunity to compare the characteristics of Windows CE/Mobile to the typical PC versions (do you know of a good online source of such information?) - apparently there are some similarities and some differences - btw, I get a kick out of Family Guy, which I presume you are also a fan of based on your icon.

How do you remove extra program icons created for software loaded onto the 6315; in particular, after having to remove and reload an older version of Windows media player (see wireless camera post for info) 3 times now for memory management purposes, I have 3 identical icons for the program appearing on the programs screen?

As usual, thanks for responses.

Strangely enough, I have recently started having this problem too (HP iPAQ h6315, T-Mobile) - kind of coincided with a new work locale in which I get undesirable to no phone reception although you would expect much better based on the location. I already started seeing a similar problem with bluetooth handsfree connect, which I discussed in a previous post and think is related to use of the Mortsaver application.

I've got all the latest known upgrade/patches. Could this be an indication that the typical 2 year life of my c-phones is about up? It is really aggravating and even more so is having the phone in the belt case sitting in the office only to discover that I have no phone signal (and wonder how long has it have been disconnected from the network - another commercial theme?) - anyway, after such discovery, I sometimes have to off/on the phone function as "imroy" originally posted. Also aggravating is that I seem to be having more dropped calls while on the road - is this a T-mobile issue too (historically, I have had undesirable weak signal locations, like home, work, family or friend's house, etc.)?

Bottom-line upfront: Please let me know if you are aware of any sure sources for the purchase of an additional 3.5mm 3-contact plug wired earbud handsfree for the 6315 (similar to the one included with it at purchase) - Thanks!

Discussion:
As I have mentioned in previous posts, I have had less than flawless performance using a BlueTooth handsfree device with the 6315 (as I am sure others can relate) - plus, of course, since the wireless handsfree device is battery operated and cannot be charged during use (at least none of the Motorola models I use), it has the limitation of running out of power at the worst times (i kind of deal with this by having two units, with one on charged stand-by) - don't get me wrong, I really like the option of a wireless handsfree, but it has inherent limitations, such as the battery charge life, connection performance (particularly for me using MortSaver), reception, etc. - Thus, I have resorted to using the wired handsfree earbud that came with my 6315 in the box when convenient to conserve the wireless handsfree for when really needed - as mentioned, it has a peculiar 3.5 mm, 3-contact (or 3-band) plug (seems that most wired handsfree sets have 2.5 mm, 2-contact plugs) - and I have not been able to locate it anywhere for a while now (I would like to have one for the car and one to carry around (e.g., in the office, etc.) - any good leads are much appreciated.

Greetings all in '07 - Just wanted to finally note (as the originator of this subject sometime ago) that I tried the solution posted by Warren (aka wswaine), including following all the details of downloading and installing - And it worked (thanks!), Except there is no sound, just video only (and it does have to occasionally be restarted) - But, this is better than not having an option to use the iPAQ to access the camera at all - As I may have noted before, we typically rely on the camera for video and use our cordless phone system to monitor audio (our child has been well monitored!) - anyway, there is delay in the audio feed from the camera (at least for us) that makes it useful only to hear sounds generally (crying, talking, etc.) but not specific sound or speech (we still use it as sort of a backup to the phone monitor and vise versa) - hope this helps for others - thanks

I wish I had more time… (famous quote or most people’s feeling) - Anyway:

This is in follow-up to my previous post entitled “Seeking screen/button-lock solution for iPAQ 6315.”

First, thanks to “armwood” for his recommendation to try MortSaver v2.0, which I am commenting on here.

Okay, to summarize the problem I was trying to solve: basically, I was looking for a way to “walk and talk” using my HP iPAQ h6315 - that is, I needed a way to avoid accidental operations with the buttons or screen on my 6315 while handling a phone call using a hands-free headset and carrying my phone in the belt carry-case (btw, I tried an HS850 and H700 to replace my HS810, which I’ll try to discuss in another post). From what I could tell, the 6315 did not incorporate an effective sort of screen/button-lock option to resolve this problem (see the previous post for additional discussion).

So, based on the recommendation, I researched and installed MortSaver 2.0 (see e.g., http://www.sto-helit.de/modules/edito/content.php?id=36). It seemed like the best option I could find to try to solve my problem. Here is a summary of the results:

- No installation problems to note (used ActiveSync).
- The included help and online information was fairly helpful to me.

SETTINGS (made in “MortSaver Options”) - I only list the options that seem to be important to proper performance - other options are user preference:
1 - under “Deactivation”
- Screen timeout: 5 (sec)
- Power off timeout: 5
--- Note, settled on the 5 sec timeout settings after finding it just sufficient to deactivate before screen or power-off - found longer times to be inconvenient to wait for.
- 1st button: Assigned button --- settled on using Button 3 (located below the hands-free jack near the left top side of the 6315) as most convenient and sufficient
- 2nd button: None --- found the use of two buttons to be unnecessary and difficult to deal with (just need to use one of the recessed buttons I think)
- show countdown after call: Selected
- Other application buttons show countdown: Selected
--- Found these selections to work best - in fact had malfunctions when second option was not selected.

2 - under “Power off / Emergency exit”
- Turn off device (not only screen) on activation: Not selected - because it interfered with my ability to activate the screen/button lock function while on a call (i.e., it would shut down the device and thereby drop the call)
- Turn off device if lock is not removed after power on: Selected --- found this helpful to insure phone turned off and locked with MortSaver after a missed call or other unexpected power on operation (e.g., if not noticed while carrying the phone in case)
- Activate MortSaver every time the device is switched on: Selected --- same reason as above
- Emergency exit if powered on twice within: 15 sec --- time is preference, but a good idea to set it for at least 10 sec - although this option does not always work and sometimes have to soft reset

3 - under “Screen / Pop-ups” - nothing selected and found to work fine

PERFORMANCE:
- when it worked, it worked - there are some conflicts, likely because of the 6315 capability, as discussed below
- if the device was on or off without MortSaver activated, with above settings, could receive or make calls, then activate Mortsaver using button to lock the screen and button interface so that I could place the device in the carry-case and use the hands-free without accidental operation, hang-up, etc. (this is the main function I was seeking)
- if the device was on or off with MortSaver activated, with above settings, could receive calls and MortSaver automatically reactivates after call end - of course, to make a call, have to deactivate MortSaver first to bring up phone interface screen
- the nice added feature of having MortSaver activated with the device off is that if a call or other function turned the phone on (e.g., without me noticing it while in the carry-case), the phone would power back off with MortSaver reactivating after the 5 sec timeout to avoid the possibility of all kinds of accidental operations occurring from the screen or buttons (e.g., the potential of accidentally making or accepting a call and disclosing personal business, insulting comments, etc. to someone without knowing you are doing so - just imagine a spouse, friend, co-worker, etc. listening in on you without you knowing - this happens all the time on phones not using a lock or having a cover or flip with disastrous and embarrassing results)

PROBLEMS:
- sometimes device failed to come out of MortSaver screen-off or device-off state and had to be reset - also, sometimes the response to deactivate was delayed, probably because of the device, OS, etc.
- appears that MortSaver device off state interferes with Bluetooth (“BT”) hands-free operation after deactivation/power-on (sometimes, have to toggle BT off/on to get connection, sometimes have to reset - very inconvenient either way) - also, storage card sometimes not detected by device after such power-on requiring a reset (also aggravating)
- generally, finding that MortSaver activation can interfere with BT operation - e.g., if call received, while in MortSaver power-off state, can of course receive call, but cannot connect BT handsfree without first deactivating MortSaver and then toggling BT off/on

BOTTOM-LINE:
- thanks to the creator of MortSaver for making at least a good patch for a functionality that should have been included with the 6315 to start with
- recommend this as a resort short of finding a better PPC phone to resolve problem I described
- I am at the point where I am ready to nickname my 6315 “Reset” and am ready to replace it (however, sticking with T-Mobile service, don’t know of a replacement available right now - any ideas?)

Thanks - will try to answer any questions when I have time

You apparently "hit the nail on the head." I obviously made the mistake of thinking I could copy straight from the folder that opened in Win Explorer upon opening the Zip file (which I think you can do in most cases and the file will be auto-extracted). Thus, once I performed an extraction first, the .cab copied fine to the iPAQ (I thought I had tried this already, but obviously not).

Thanks for your persistence, and hopefully this will help someone else in the same predicament.

Also, I guess I can now evaluate this ScreenLock for Pocket PC program to see if resolves my other inquiry.

QUOTE (smeg36 @ Oct 3 2005, 02:28 PM)
Are you certain you aren't trying to copy/paste it from a ZIP folder directly to your device?  That is exactly what happens when I have tried copying from a ZIP folder.  I had to extract the contents of the ZIP before I could copy it to my PPC.  If that isn't the case, then I don't know.  I would just do what Sean said because I have a card reader.

Your suggestion is the typical method that I use to transfer other files with ease - but with the 2 or 3 .cab files I have tried to transfer, the copy option is disabled (i.e., grayed out) and no other method I can think of (being reasonably computer savvy) has worked - either the file is not accptable for 6315s or there is some fix that I am not aware of - thanks.

QUOTE (smeg36 @ Oct 3 2005, 04:46 AM)
Using Activesync should work no problem.  If the CAB is in a ZIP folder, you have to unzip it prior to copying and pasting it with Activesync Explore.  Then you just find the file on your PPC using File Explorer, and execute it.  It will automatically install itself to the Main Memory.

I’m looking for software that allows me to (at least) “voice-dial” the phone on my iPAQ, you know, to make it truly hands-free when I am driving or otherwise. I searched for some trial options on the Handago and Pocketgear websites and picked out the following: MS Voice Command, Fonix Voice Central, and SmartVoice VoiceDialerPro. I loaded the trial for MS Voice Command, but never got it to work before the short 5 day trial ended.

Any suggestions for a good voice dialer or comments about the ones I have already considered are welcomed.

Thanks

In the year or so that I have been “iPAQin’”, I’ve had this problem a couple of times. That is, I have not been able to figure out how to load software that consists of a .cab type file (which I believe is a Windows “cabinet” file). Unlike most other files or programs, I cannot seem to transfer a .cab file to my iPAQ using ActiveSync (which is the only way I link between my iPAQ and PC for file transfers.

So, can anyway give me some insight on transferring a .cab file to my iPAQ and/or on making the file work (e.g., unpacking the software)?

Thanks

I’ve been using my iPAQ regularly for about a year now. I use a Motorola HS810 Bluetooth hands-free(I know, it’s an older model, purchased in Sep. 2004 with my iPAQ) with it for convenient hands-free calls and audio monitoring. However, I’ve realized that there is a significant inconvenience in the fact that I cannot put my iPAQ back in the belt-carry case (pants-pocket, etc.) while I am using it for a phone call or listening to audio. Why? - because of the high likelihood that the screen or a button may be pressed (activated, etc.), which could have consequences ranging from hanging up my call, making an unintended call, or unintentionally causing another function to start or stop (you know). So, I am typically limited to having to either hold the iPAQ in my hand or place in it in my shirt pocket while in use to avoid this problem (which is of course inconvenient, uncomfortable, and poses a high-risk for dropping). Therefore, I am seeking a solution (most likely software) that allows me to lock the screen and key operation of my iPAQ while it is in operation (e.g., during a call, running program, etc.) and requires some screen-key or button sequence to unlock the unit (i.e., a sequence that is unlikely to occur accidentally while the unit is in the carry case, pants-pocket, etc.).

I did a search on the Handago and Pocketgear websites and thought that ScreenLock for Pocket PC (see http://www.pocketgear.com/software_detail.asp?id=14621) looked like a close fit to the solution I was seeking, but as discussed in my next post, I have not been able to evaluate the software because I haven’t figured out how to load it (see post entitled “How do you load a .cab file to iPAQ h6315?” for more details) - also, it is not clear from the product details whether it is compatible with a 6315.

So, I welcome any suggestions/recommendations for a screen/button-lock solution with some or all of the features discussed above.

Thanks

Hopefully this discussion of my experience will also be helpful to others - my conclusion is that 1) you should regularly back-up your iPAQ using the ActiveSync backup option (I use the incremental option to speed up the process); 2) if your Bluetooth handsfree link stops working and can not be reestablished through the normal procedure, taking the steps of a) conducting a hard reset, b) restoring the iPAQ using ActiveSync’s backup option, and c) then reloading the Bluetooth handsfree link using the typical procedure may be a viable solution (i.e., it worked for me).

So, the story is that one day my Bluetooth link to my Motorola HS810 (I know, it’s an older model, purchased in Sep. 2004 with my iPAQ) just stopped working. This was after I obtained the improved Bluetooth performance that the HP software update provided. I tried all the little tricks, like on/off’ing the headset a few times, on/off’ing the Bluetooth function on the iPAQ using the connection manager, soft reset, etc., all with no success. Didn’t know whether the problem was the headset or the iPAQ (and prayed it was not a hardware failure). So, I took it to a local T-Mobile location (actual, not a reseller or agent) and got a service rep to try to troubleshoot without performing a hard reset (which is of course time consuming and can be stressful until everything is restored, if you know what I mean). After trying most of the same things I had already done and also deleting the link and trying unsuccessfully to reload it, the rep tested the handset with a couple of other devices and it worked fine. So, we narrowed the problem down to the iPAQ - the dreaded suggestion, contact tech support. Did I mention how much of a pain it was that day not to have the cordless handsfree option working? Anyway, after being on hold for about 30 minutes (and I think I was disconnected at least once too), I decided to take the plunge and do a hard reset (the first since the HP s/w upgrade, so I was apprehensive). Well, I went through the steps suggested above/below (i.e., a-c) and success, the Bluetooth link was quickly re-established and things worked fine.

I haven’t figured out what caused this mysterious problem in the first place, but if you experience it, following the steps of a) conducting a hard reset, b) restoring the iPAQ using ActiveSync’s backup option (presuming you have been using it to start with), and c) then reloading the Bluetooth handsfree link using the typical procedure may provide a fix. Hope this is helpful.

Hopefully this discussion of my experience will be helpful to others - my conclusion is that you should stick with using SD cards in your iPAQ (and possibly other devices as well) that include the traditional write-protect switch.

I had been using a Kingmax (see www.kingmaxdigi.com/product/SD.htm) 1GB 60x SD card since I purchased my iPAQ in Sep. 2004. I only used the card in the iPAQ and had never used it in a PC or other device. At the time that I purchased the Kingmax card, it was attractive because of the low price for seemingly high performance (e.g., R/W speeds) - I did the research on performance and price and ended up purchasing the card from Overtsock.com for about $50 (which was a very competitive price at the time). The main distinction of the Kingmax to other SD cards is the omission of a write-protect switch (Kingmax of course reasons why this is of no significance in its FAQs - see www.kingmaxdigi.com/support/faq.htm).

Since I had so much success (or no problems) with the first card, I purchased two more around Jan. 2005 to use in my Kodak digital camera. I used one card in the camera without problem for months, but only carried the other card as a spare without ever testing it (which was a mistake - I am always very busy, but I now make it a point to test any purchase asap within 30 days).

Then it happened; I needed to use the spare card (i.e., card no. 3) to transfer some digital pictures to a photo printer at the local super-store (you know the one, so I won't mention the name). So, I popped the card into the card slot of my HP laptop, but the PC could not read or format the card. After trying to use the card in both my iPAQ and my digital camera, I realized that the card was faulty and just did not work at all. No problem, I figured, I'll just use the existing card from my iPAQ on my laptop to transfer the pictures - big mistake (however, I was smart enough to regularly back up my iPAQ using ActiveSync and that saved me later).

The simple and reasonable action of using the SD card from my iPAQ temporarily to print some pictures was devastating. Everything seemed to work fine at first - the laptop appeared to read the card and allow me to copy the pictures over (jpegs). But, when I put the card back in the iPAQ to copy some files over to it using ActiveSync, the transfer attempt failed every time, locking up ActiveSync. Furthermore, I could no longer access the data/files on the card using either my iPAQ or the laptop. This was troubling because I now had one bad card straight from the package and another card (from my iPAQ) that was now not working right - I didn't dare try anything with the remaining card that I was using in my digital camera - but I still needed to transfer the pictures. So I ended paying about $30 more than I would have from an online retailer to purchase an emergency card from the local super-store, a SanDisk 1GB SD card with a write-protect switch (the best option of cost and performance). I successfully used the SanDisk card to transfer the pictures and then later used it to copy all the data that was previously stored on the now malfunctioning Kingmax card for use in my iPAQ without any problems from the new card.

But, before I used the SanDisk replacement card for my iPAQ, I first spent a good bit of the remaining day trying to get the Kingmax SD card to recover - that is, to be able to read and write to the card. But, the card would not support reads, writes, or re-formatting (i.e., could not format the SD card). I tried of a couple of software support options, including “Flash Format” by CNetX (see www.cnetx.com/format/) and “Recover Manager” by VAIOSoft (see www.vaiosoft.com/products/recoverymanager.html) - Flash Format appears to be a good program for the iPAQ, although neither it or Recovery Manager could help with recovering the Kingmax card. It basically ended with the Kingmax card being locked to writes and formatting and only providing limited reads of apparently corrupted data (mostly image files) - Kingmax supposedly offers a 2 year warranty (although it’s through the retailer), which will be fine for the out of the package non-functioning card, but I am not comfortable returning the “locked” card that I was using in my iPAQ (i.e., since data may still be recoverable from it), so that may just be a loss. Furthermore, I have no intention to rely on the third card anymore either.

So, bottom line (and believe me, I searched everywhere for information and tools to resolve this problem first), it appears that you are better off using SD cards (for your iPAQ, PC, etc.) that have the traditional write-protect switch to avoid unexpected loss of data access (i.e., read, write, or corruption) and the ability to format (or re-format). From what I could gather, the problem may be related to a conflict between windows and the SD format aggravated by the lack of the write-protect “notch.” My response was to order 4 additional SD cards (of course, with the traditional write-protect switch) (one each) made by RiData, A-Data, Transcend, and Extreme Performance, all of which have been tested and have been working fine in all devices. I have replaced the remaining Kingmax card in my digital camera with one of these cards and now have several spares as well. FYI, my research for price and reliability led me to purchase from NewEgg.com with good results - in fact, I had to return one card back because, get this, it was a 500MB card mispackaged in a 1GB package - but the return went fine and I promptly received the replacement of the proper card.

Again, since I found little or no information of this sort in my search, I hope this will be helpful information to others.

Well, in reply to my own message below, I got the chance to talk to t-mobile customer service and was told the following in response to my questions:

1) t-mobile has "temporarily" pulled the HP iPAQ h6315 from its product line pending a resolution between them and HP for the release of new units with an upgraded operating system (ROM or whatever) (presumably to resolve the numerous and various glitches that present users have been experiencing).

2) as of recently, t-mobile and HP are in the process of preparing a release of a ROM upgrade for existing HP iPAQ h6315 user's to apply to resolve the numerous and various glitches (some of which I am also experiencing).

So, I guess if things work out, in the near future we will see the 6315 return to the product line operating better before, and we existing users will be able to match that improved performance with the promised ROM upgrade (I noticed discussion of this in the posting at the top of the forum as well).

Hope this is helpful and let's keep hope that t-mobile and HP will follow through

-----

QUOTE (6315_user @ Mar 21 2005, 05:16 PM)
I was making a routine check to the t-mobile website looking for any system upgrades and noticed that my (our) phone, the HP iPAQ h6315, is no longer listed on their products page (see http://www.t-mobile.com/products/default.asp?class=pda), although it is still listed under support right now (see http://support.t-mobile.com/productSelecto...tManufacturer=).

So does any one know what's going on?  Did I just catch the website during an update period (doubt it)?  I haven't had a chance to call t-mobile customer service for further info yet.

Also, has anyone heard about a full operating system upgrade that t-mobile promised to release?  I'm not referring to the patch released back in Sep. '04 - a t-mobile tech support rep told me this upgrade would be released by late Jan. '05, but I've yet to see it.

I meant to add: 1 - I have already spent a good deal of time searching the web for a solution, so I am not just looking for an answer without first researching the problem myself. 2 - I am looking for a local solution, that is, a solution that does not involve using a 3rd party server to obtain the browser functions I am seeking (like I have seen described in some previous posts).

Thanks again

My question is does anyone know how I can view the camera output from my Linksys WVC54G WiFi camera on my iPAQ h6315 - both devices connect fine to my WiFi network, but the camera instructions say it requires IE 5.5+ to run the web-based viewer and the viewer utility does not show-up in Activesync to transfer to iPAQ. My understanding is that a browser has to run an Active-X OCX applet (see e.g., https://linksys.custhelp.com/cgi-bin/linksy...ted=1094753229) in order to view the camera output.

I tried the trial version of Netfront 3.1 w/JV lite but got the same result as with PIE, namely no picture, but just a small box. Linksys support also had no ideas.

There has got to be a way (or at least there should be) for me to view this WiFi camera using my iPAQ - otherwise, I would have to waste the money to buy a very small laptop. (If interested, I will be using it to monitor the baby).

So maybe someone has already experienced this and can offer some tips.

Let me know if you need more info.

Thanks

Thanks - I'll try that - too bad about the customer service though

By the way, I tried to get an answer from NetFront customer service (i.e., Access Co. Ltd. - US), but have not received a response to my voice message.

I have been doing research to find a browser that I can run locally on my iPAQ h6315 that can handle Active-X and Java and came up with NetFront as a possible solution. I saw a couple of earlier posts (e.g., by "Smeg36") in the forum that mention a NetFront browser.

However, I am trying to find out specifically which NetFront browser(s) are compatible with the h6315 (e.g., there is NetFront v3.1 for PPC2003 with JV-Lite2 Rel1.00, NetFront v3.1 for PPC2003 Rel1.000, etc.) (see e.g., www.pocketgear.com and do a search on "browser"). Also, I am wondering if the NetFront browser features work as advertised, particularly for Active-X and Java. The reason I have been looking into this is that I am trying to use a web-based viewer for a Linksys WiFi camera (model WVC54G), which works fine on later versions of IE that can run an Active-X OCX applet (see e.g., https://linksys.custhelp.com/cgi-bin/linksy...ted=1094753229), so let me know if you think NetFront will work for this.

Thanks for the response.

I'm not sure what is meant by removing the T-Mobile plug-ins, although it may be something simple. How do you remove the T-Mobile plug-ins?

Thanks

Thanks for your responses.

I have not installed the T-Mobile upgrade yet, although I plan to, but I also get the impression that does not apply to this behavior. When I spoke to a level 3 T-Mobile rep for support on another matter, she seemed to acknowledge this behavior as typical during soft resets (it has been doing this since the first usage). I think it has something to do with some standard start-up itmes and/or plug-ins (e.g., the Today screen is defaulted back to the T-Mobile wallpaper and the T-Mobile messaging item is added back to the list). I saw a post by a Qman (sp?) that seemed to touch on modifying such items in relation to soft resets.

Otherwise, I auto-back-up upon docking and have also performed a couple of hard resets for other matters as well. If I discover the fix, I'll post it, but I appreciate any other feedback of possible solutions, and maybe I'll talk to a T-Mobile tech again as well.

Thanks.

Sometimes (intermittently), for example, after running a program (such as Inbox or Calendar) or changing some settings (e.g., in the Settings window or iPAQ wireless window), some or all of the so-called quick access icons (e.g., the iPAQ wireless shortcut, the Phone Book shortcut, and the power status shortcut) that normally appear at the bottom right of the Today screen disappear and do not restore until a soft reset is performed. Of course, these icons are helpful to have on screen.

Does anyone know a cause/solution for this problem?

Thanks
