I wanted to start a thread dedicated to this topic:

How successful has the Smartphone OS by Microsoft?

I was an early adopter, getting the Motorola MPx200 when it first came out about 2 years ago. It was plauged with bugs from Caller ID not working properly, the phone screetching when I closed the flip, to the phone just dying on me every once in awhile. I understood this was the first smartphone and as an early adopter, I was essentially becoming a beta tester. I felt the Smartphone OS was going in the right direction.

Last October, I ran into the middle of NYC to get the Mpx220 in rush hour traffic, so I can be the first one. I went on my wife's birthday and left her, that is how badly I wanted this phone! Well, 8 months later, I am very disappointed. I have been through 3 220's and about to be my 4th. The first was plagued with the original firmware and low volume. The second just kept powering down (I believe some have resolved this with a paper clip under the battery). The third now has what it appears to be a physical problem, and won't charge under the regular power cable. While we can't blame Microsoft for this, we can sure blame Motorola. In addition to this problem, my phone would power down while in the middle of a call. Through my trials, I developed a contact at Motorola, who has helped me out in replacing my units and keeping me up to date with the latest. It's amazing what a &$%#^ e-mail to a top level executive will do for you! It works folks, try it.

I have made the decision to leave the smartphone arena for the time being. While I love the concept, and enjoyed many of it's great features, I just can't continue to pay my hard earned money for these phones. We have to remember, these are phones first, and we have all come to rely on our phones so heavily, that I can't afford to have a phone power down on me all the time or make the caller on the end deaf. I suspect Motorola might be to blame for some of these issues, as there seems to be a lot less problems with other manufacturers such as Audiovox, but let's face it, Motorola makes the sleekest and coolest looking flip phones. Features like Bluetooth over voice dialing and Mapapolis not working added to my frustrations. I went out and spent over 100 bucks on a Bluetooth GPS Device that is basically useless with Microsoft Street and Trips.

I decided this week to go out and get a Razr V3. While the OS isn't as cool as the Smartphone, the design is unbeatable, and I am sure I won't have all the problems I was havng with the 200 and 220 MPX's, since it's a phone first. It actually has most of the features the smartphone does such as POP e-mail, and a browser and actually has bluetooth voice dialing (albeit with voice training needed, not speech recognition).

What are your thoughts on this? Do you guys and girls think the smartphone OS has been a failed product? I know the 2005 OS is supposed to be improved, but I think I will hold off until I see proof. My new 220 that will arrive from Best Buy, along with my GPS Device will be on Ebay shortly. This post is not meant to start arguments, just to vent a little.

Thanks guys so much. It turns out it is a carrier specific setting. I had to call T-mobile and tell them to turn MMS off on my account and now I am receiving text messages upto 160 characters. That is all I asked for. Unfortunately, It took me tier 3 T-Mobile to get that answer that I could have found on the web page!

Has anyone else noticed this bug with the 220. When receiving large text messages (300 characters), the message comes in as a MMS message that doesn't fully download. This is a pain b/c you can't view anything but the subject. I realize there is a character limit but to not be able to view any of the message is really bad b/c I am trying to set my 220 up to receive alerts from our monitoring systems at work such as HP Insight Manager and HP Openview. Try sending a text message to your phone like this:

Tax Assistant for Excel is a custom application written for Microsoft Excel
and requires Microsoft Excel 97/2000/XP/2003. It simplifies your Federal
Income Tax preparation by providing Excel workbooks with IRS approved
substitute forms for both Form 1040 and Form 1040A along with the most
commonly used Schedules and Worksheets. Your sources of income and
deductions are entered on separate worksheets. The data from these
worksheets is then automatically entered into the correct forms. Tax
Assistant for Excel helps you determine whether to itemize deductions,
calculates your tax and provides a computerized record of your tax filing.

Let me know if you guys receive the same problems. I am using firmware 1.3.

I have gotten Internet working with the 4.99 plan, see here:

http://www.mpx200.org/index.php?name=PNphp...iewtopic&t=6475

The tzones page still doesnt load properly on the 220, but I could care less as long as the Internet is working.

Smeg,

Are you referring to using the 220 as a GPRS modem? I was able to connect to *99# using the 220 as a Bluetooth Modem and I was able to connect from my laptop. Is this what your looking for? The second I would go to a website on my 220 once connected, it would disconnect the dial up GPRS session though.

There is no 1.7 or 1.8 or 1.9 out right now. Maybe next year, first quarter, but as of now the Cingular 1.3 is the latest and greatest.

Thanks to our wonderful forums and Howard Forums, I got the 220 working again with the 4.99 plan. I still can't get the Tzones page working, but I suspect that is Pocket IE not handling the page correctly because I think Tzones is WAP 1.0, and not so much a setting. I don't personally care about getting the Tzones page if I can get to any other page fine. I only wanted to get to the Tzones page if I couldn't get anywhere else!

Here are the settings:

GPRS Connections:

Connection Name: TZones GPRS
Say it connects to WAP Network
Access point is : wap.voicestream.com
User name blank
Password blank
Pri. DNS blank
Sec. DNS blank
IP addr. blank

Proxy Connection:

Name: TZones Proxy
Say it Connects from: WAP Network
Say it Connects to: The Internet
Proxy (name:port): 216.155.165.50:8080
Type: HTTP
User name blank
Password blank

On the Data Connections Screen, set everything to Automatic.

In IE, under Connections, check Automatically Detect Settings. For network, Select WAP Network.

For POP/SMTP Accounts, use the WAP Network settings. This is important, as mine were set to The Internet, and did not work until I changed it.

We are back in business, for now, until T-Mobile blocks this method also. I suspect this will work the MPX200 as well, and any other smartphone. I have tested HTTP, WAP, POP and SMTP, and even rebooted my phone and everything works great, like they used to. I knew It was a matter of time before we figured it out.

Holy Batman! This works on the 220 as well. I am posting this as a new thread b/c I had to tinker the settings a little to get POP working. Thanks guys. I love forums....

I called T-mobile about this. They claim the 220 can only accept up to 160 characters via text message. Do you guys know if this is true? Can anyone on Cingular test out a 300 characther text message for me and find out if it's Tmobile or the phone. You can send a text message to your phone on Cingular by emailing phonenumber@mobile.mycingular.com.

Some people with the 5600 have had success with these settings:

http://www.howardforums.com/showthread.php...threadid=517786

I personally have an MPx220, and with the above settings, I can visit some sites such as Yellowpages.com, moviefone.com, but not many including Tzones. I have the 4.99 plan.

Does anyone have Compaq Insight Manager version 5.50 running in their office? I have it running and it sends me test alarms to my 220 via e-mail to my phone. phonenumber@tomail.net. They end up coming in a MMS messages on my 220 and I can't view them. They should be coming in as text messages. Does anyone else experience this with the 220/T-Mobile?

I also tested the 19.99 plan with T-Mo..the only change I made was from wap.voicestream.com to internet2.voicestream.com. You don't need proxies or to uncheck settings. If only the 4.99 plan was that easy...

I spoke to my contact at Motorola, and I am on a list to be a trial user with a potential upcoming firmware upgrade, but it won't be anytime soon. I bought Pocket Streets for now.

Actually, we have figured out a way to visit some WAP sites with the 220, read my thread here:

http://www.mpx200.org/index.php?name=PNphp...iewtopic&t=6280

I have succesfully visited some sites such as HowardForums, MovieFone, Yellowpages.com. However, most sites, and most importantly I get error messages. Probably because T-mobile's proxy server isn't suppose to work with the 220. However, the Audiovox 5600 works with the Tzones page I think.

Weirdest thing...with the settings mentioned above, I was able to access wap.howardforums.com. But other wap sites didn't work for me such as wap.yahoo.com. I get Your client is not allowed to access the requested object. Were on to something folks.

Check this thread out:

http://www.howardforums.com/showthread.php...threadid=517786

I tried it with the 220 and when I got the T-zones page I get:
Your request for a service could not be fulfilled. Please try again or contact your operator if the problem persists.

I tried the exact same settings as this guy did. Why don't you guys give it a shot. Maybe they are changing settings across the US just like when they shut it down for us.

This unfortunately won't be as easy to fix since it's most likely a hardware issue. It doesn't really make a difference to me, just a oversight that really doesn't affect the functionality of the phone like the other issues we have encountered did.

I spoke to a contact in the Motorola product team for the 220 and he said don't expect a firmware upgrade until 1st quarter next year because Cingular seems happy with the 1.3. He said the 1.9 firmware is not true, and it's a rumor. They are still working on the Bluetooth GPS issue.

Yes, I noticed that also, it wakes up, but no settings are received. Anyhows, at this point, it makes no difference because the settings were correct, as we are forced to go to the 19.99 plan. I just wish T-Mobile would be a little more forthcoming in information.

I should add, I would be happy just using the Tzones page (wap.myvoicestream.com). However, as most of you know, this never really worked on the 200 or 220. The tech support guy told me that page was written in WAP 1.1 and the smartphones use 2.0 and blank pages would appear because of this. He seemed pretty knowledgable, so I trusted his knowledge.

Ok..I got off the phone with T-Mobile and cleared it up. The PDA tech support problem told me they were having a lot of issues with non-supported phones and Tzones. I work in IT, I can see why T-mobile did this, it was probably a nightmare to support and we were probably eating their resources away. He said they have been making changes over the past 1.5 months to lock down Tzones slowly across the country. I guess so they didn't get a million calls at once. He said it still should work with wap sites, but I a simple browse to wap.yahoo.com still fails on the 4.99 plan. He also mentioned that POP shouldnt work either and told me good for me that it did. So I would not be suprised if eventually that will stop working at some point also. He then temporarily switched me to the 19.99 plan to run a simple test, and sure enough, I was able to browse the web. Yes, their data plans are good, but I guess going from paying nothing to now 19.99 in 5 months got me spoiled. I guess when you decide to go with an unsupported phone, these are the chances you take. I am just not crazy about T-Mobile's reception in some areas by me and the cheap cheap data plans kept me a customer. I will have to re-evaluate in 6 months.

I have e-mailed T-mobile to try and get something in writing. I find a lot of times when you e-mail problems you get more accurate answers b/c the rep is not trying to rush you off the phone to close the ticket out. I never saw the point of getting the 19.99 unlimited e-mail plan as I was able to do just about everything with the 4.99 plan including POP, HTML, SSL, etc. Now it looks like I might not have a choice. Does anyone know how Cingular's data plans work? I know they have for 19.99 unlimited Internet, but do they allow pop for 5 bucks a month like T-Mobile? I am thinking of switching once my contract is up in June 05.

Thanks. T-Mobile keeps claiming they are having issues in the New York area. I don't believe it since POP works and hundreds of MPx220 users are having the same problem. They clearly are locking things down. A year ago, I had free WAP and POP, then they forced me over to the 4.99 T-zones plan. Now, they are forcing us the the 19.99 plan?? It seems they are trying to eliminate non T-mobile phones from doing much. I suspect eventually they will block off POP also off of the 4.99 plan.
