Nokia, the world's largest maker of mobile phones, widened its lead over competitors like Motorola in the fourth quarter, helped by demand in Asia and other emerging markets and an improved product offering in Europe and the United States.
Nokia's share rose to 35 percent last quarter from 33 percent a year earlier, the research firm Gartner said Tuesday. The share of Motorola, the world's No.2 handset maker, rose to 17.8 percent from 16.3 percent.
Global mobile phone sales over all rose 20 percent in the fourth quarter to 235 million units from a year earlier, bringing the total to 817 million for 2005, said Gartner, based in Stamford, Connecticut. Sales this year will increase 10 percent to 15 percent, Gartner forecast.
