Someone I know has an MPx220, that came from eBay. The phone switches itself off from time to time, and to get it to come back up, the battery has to be removed and replaced. Sometimes the keypad lights stay on, but nothing else - the screen is blank and nothing responds.

Does anyone have any suggestions on how to deal with this?

The first thing I'd do, especially with a phone from ebay, is a hard reset. With the phone off press and hold the power button and the blue action button, then follow the on screen instructions. If that still doesn't fix it you could flash the ROM, but we'll work on that if the hard reset doesn't work.

Thanks. Done the reset and watching to see... I'll let you know.

Here's what happened recently: He was using the phone, and in a call, when the phone went blank (as in it stopped responding). The call, however, was still in progress for a while, but the screen and keys and close lid were non-responsive.

A hard reset can't have made it worse. If it's still there, and indeed getting worse, after a hard reset it is either a corrupt ROM or a hardware problem. You can read instructions on how to flash the ROM here. If it still occurs after that then it's a problem in the hardware of the phone.

Not anywhere legally. Google is the best way.
