Is there any way to get real time GPS for the mpx200? Any device that'll hook up to it or any GPS software or something?

Thanks

I'm looking for the same thing. I know that Nextel has it. If I find anything, I will be sure to post it.

There is not any GPS device that will work on the MPX200 but with
the MPX220 the Bluetooth devices will work.

I wanted to upgrade to wm2003. but I'm beginning to think that I should just wait for the mpx220 to come out.

That may be a prudent choice.

Check this out http://www.microsoft.com/products/info/pro...20a040&type=ovr

Looks like it will work with smartphones.

It is established that GPS will work on smartphones. However there is nothing out there that supports the MPx200 so GPS on this phone is just impossible at this point. Most smartphones that are out there are equipped with Blue Tooth making GPS via BT no problem for those smartphone users that have the proper mapping software no problem. Now for us MPx200 users we have to rely on other methods as GPS support is not yet available, prob never will be, considering that the phone is soon to be outdated sad.gif, but I still love this phone...

You are right on GPS part, but we should be able to load maps to our MPX200. Here is what it says in system req:

Microsoft Windows-powered Smartphone 2002 or Microsoft Windows Mobile 2003 Smartphone or later with ActiveSync® 3.6 API and 350KB available program memory required for installation of Pocket Streets for Smartphone; installing map files requires additional memory (approximately 1 MB per city map)

You can use the map programs, I have Mapopolis on my phone now and have used it many times for driving directions. However you can't get your location on the map. I think the map is a much more useful feature than knowing where you are on it though.

I use Mapopolis on both my Dell Axim X3 and my MPx200. Although I have GPS on the X3 it is still very useful on the MPx200. Check out my review that I did a while back on it...

Same here, Mapopolis on my MPx200 and Toshiba E800. It really is a great program, and you can try out maps for just about anywhere before you buy. Then when you do, you can buy single locations instead of having to get the whole USA for hundreds of dollars.

Well, that is what the Mugen 2000 mAh battery was made for. I use one, and never find myself low on power. I just can't imagine going back to a QVGA screen after the E800.

OK, here is an idea. I know that with USB we have a master-slave concept (that is why you can not use USB GPS - both the phone and the GPS are slaves). However, there are USB-Serial cables out there which allow you to connect the phone to the serial port of the PC and use ActiveSync that way.
With the RS232 there is no concept of master-slave. Hence (theoretically) you can get a) USB-Serial cable; and cool.gif Serial GPS (they are common) and connect them to the MPx200. The question then becomes the sw - it needs to support a serial GPS.
On the other hand the phone has IR port which is very much like the Serial port. Are there GPSes with IR communication? Is there software that supports them on MPx200?
There are CF GPSes out there, may be soon we will have SD GPSes. However, I am not sure how the sw (OS+Mapping) will support them on MPx200.
Ideas, ideas..... I am very tempted to try the Serial cable approach.

The problem doesn't just fall on pluging one in, here is why. Following your master-slave theory, I use GPS via serial on my PPC, wouldn't that be a slave-slave. No, and here is why. There are drivers out for particular devices so that it will work. I am pretty sure that GPS would be a sinch if you had a GPS reciever that connected via mini-USB and the propper drivers for the phone. Even if you had a cable to connect the phone to a GPS, chances are it wouldn't recognize it due to the lack of driver support. I don't think that there are any IR GPS on the market either, but even with we still fall back to the driver issue. If you can figure out something make sure to let us know.

Gryphon,
That is exactly the point - with serial connection both devices are equal. I also checked Mapopolis (I use it all the time and I dare to say that I like it) and it has suport for Serial GPS. You see, I am getting closer:)
If you hook up your GPS to a PC and start a terminal emulator on that port you will see that the GPS looks very much like a modem, in terms of the way it communicates.
Something that bothers me is that ActiveSynch has only USB configuration (on the phone) even though they sell USB-Serial cables from MPx200. It is possible, even if I got the Serial ActiveSynch to work, to have a problem with a straight Serial-Serial connection.
In any case I have a project for the next couple of weeks:)

Definatly keep us posted on that one... I use serial connection on my Dell Axim X3 using Mapopolis, and wouldn't use any other mapping software... wink.gif now if I could only get the GPS on my phone...
