MGN applauds Verizon for updating the i730 to WM5. We also applaud PDAPhonehome, Super Dave and mrailing for getting the WM5 out to the i730 public. Too often carriers do not support software upgrades. Thank you Verizon for extending the usefulness of this solid device. If you perform the upgrade make sure you follow the instructions carefully. I installed the update on my i730 and it is working fine. Please note that the WM5 upgrade does not include the Sprite Backup utility like the WM2003 version. It also does not support tethering but PDAPhonehome.com has a solution for you.

Wow, I was starting to think they were just going to give up on releasing it since it got leaked already. I was wondering if they maybe even purposely leaked it so they wouldn't have to officially support it. Way to go VZW. As far as carriers updating and upgrading their WM devices, VZW seems to be the best with the WM2003 upgrade for the i600 and i700, WM5 for the i730, and the AKU2 update for the 700w.

Will this update also work on Non-Verizon Branded and unlocked phone? I have one from Europe. Any suggestions?

It will only work in the Samsung i730, which is only available on Verizon.

The new OS works fine and I'm glad I installed it. My only regret is not knowing Sprite Backup was going to be gone - it's what I used to backup my files to the SDcard in the phone. Can someone kindly instruct me in the reinstall process. I ill very much appreciate it.
Cheers, johnC

John, I did PM you. If you upgraded from 2003 to WM5 I would only restore my personal data etc from the Sprite backup. I would not restore programs. I would reinstall all my programs to be sure the registry settings are clean and correct. Also your old version of Sprite will need to be upgraded to the WM5 version. See https://spritesoftware.crmdesk.com/answer.aspx?id=329&back=search.aspx%3F

Don't be disappointed about having to reinstall software. It is optimal to have fresh program installs when you upgrade the ROM. You could restore the entire Sprite backup and see if things work. The worst thing that could happen is you would have to hard reset and start over. I recommend only using your data which is selectable in the Sprite Restore advance menu.

Hi abatis,
I got your PM, thanks. I'm only tring to restore my personal data(sorry for the confusion). I do have a clean new OS. I don't appear to have Sprite on the phone and I've been told it's not provided in the new upgrade so I'm at a dead loss as to how to restore it. File Manager is not an option since it also does not appear in the OS.
The first message I get at the Sprite url you sent is: 1. Download the upgrade file utility for your Smartphone version from this location GetUpgradeData2005_SP.exe

When I attempt to run it I get the message that it's not a valid Win32 app
It seems that I need to somehow access the SD card from the phone
get Sprite backup added to my progs(how to do that?)
anyway ta for your interest
cheers, johnC

I recently did the upgrade on my i730 to WM5. Now my device has become extremely unstable. It reboots itself regularly. When it's not doing that, it frequently turns on the backlight while it's in my holster, for no apparent reason, resulting in very rapidly using up the battery.

Does anyone know if there's a way to uninstall WM5? I would assume that a simple hardware reset will not restore the original OS, right? WM5 has some nice features on the surface, but I just can't deal with these terrible instability issues.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Sam

I found the WM5 was an improvement on the Samung i730. Perhaps try http://support.vzw.com/phones/?m=&p=1780 upgrade again.
