QUOTE (abatis @ Apr 11 2009, 02:16 PM) *
That is great. The GPS ied to Verizon has bothered me. Any issues with the ROM?

Some have had issues. Even a few reported Bricks... but I really think they were doing something wrong (like batteries low).

I didn't after I figured out that you had to turn off the phone (completely) to do the flash rather than just turn off the screen.

GPS work (for me) real well. I suspect however that the Assisted part is either not always working or doesn't work at all. It can sometimes take time to get a sync.

I've used it with GPSGate, Gmaps, LiveSearch and G-Watch.

The rom has a couple other things in it. It is I suspect a Beta Rom, not an actual release but works well for me.

Now I want to cook my own Roms but I want to keep one one "safe and configured" as I really need it. So if I mess up the other one its not a big disaster.

The official rom is supposed to be out mid May.

Flashed phone with "unofficial" ROM the other day.

GPS is now unlocked and works pretty good. Appears that Assisted part sometimes doesn't work so you takes a while to get a lock. Today, its been locking in about 30 seconds.

They are now starting to make custom ROMs for this now that an image was finally found.

Easily, the best phone I've had so far.

Looking at Abatis For sale, might pick up a spare.

The case is going back.

The killer was the strip of leather across the front of the device over the Samsung logo. It prevented the use of the Dpad for up and down swipes. I'm not sure that even with that strip removed that the case would not still interfere with swipes due to the bottom edge of the case.

Accessories arrived today... fast. I just ordered them Thursday from BoxWave.

Two items...

Leather Case

URL: http://www.boxwave.com/products/dlsleeve/s...sleeve_3399.htm

Leather case that the unit slides into and is held in via a strap snap at the top. Nice snug fit that doesn't make the phone too large. Easier to hold (phone by itself is a bit slippery). I left the clip off as I put it in my pocket, but useful if I need it.

Retractable Dual Charge/Sync Data cable
URL: http://www.boxwave.com/products/minisync/m...a-i910_3399.htm

First thing I found out when I got the phone was the normal USB data/charge cable didn't work with my USB Cigarette lighter adapter in the truck. Something Samsung did about charging to a non-computer USB device.

This cable has two ends, one for charge/sync with a computer and one for charge to a USB non-computer device.

Works great.

I'm impressed.

I ran a test app last night that is able to talk to the GPS chip on the phone. So unlocking looks to be fairly close.

What impressed me was the speed of the lock and the fact it could see up to 9 Sat's while I was sitting in the middle of the family room at least 15ft from a window in my house. It also locked on very fast as apparently the test app uses the aGPS features to assist in lock.

It took about 12 seconds before it did anything, said looking for GPS signals and then bam, it came up with data and had 5 sat's already.

The GPS in my truck has a cow if I go under a drive thu.

Image of a capture of the data attached. Oh, the app has the coordinates backwards... lat <-> long but they key is that it can get data from the chip.

I've had my Omnia i910 now for just over a week (1 wk +1 day). It is a great phone. I came from a very usable i760.

This phone is smaller, thinner, more accessible and works well with so far, no real hangups.

I have added some 3rd party software, some of which I was using on my i760, some of it new to take better advantage of the phone.

List of Current software is:
IntelliSync (via work)
AEButonPlus
Resco Explorer
MyMobiler
Spb Pocket Plus
Spb Keyboard (switch between it and Samsung keyboard)
PocketMax PhoneAlarm
MoDaCo OmniaTHREAD
MohairSofa Calendar+ Today Plugin
Slingplayer Mobile
Tonaya Weather to Go
Inesoft Phone4

It looks like I finally got past some issues with PhoneAlarm in silent mode. I was having issues that appear to have been related to the constantly running ActiveSync. I found a way to stop that.

I became a magnet at work with questions about the phone as a number of fellow employees, management and upper management are looking at the same phone. I created a PDF that has some issues, software I am using etc... that I will post here when I get the next update in.

Issues...

Always are some, but so far not many...

The virtual keyboard takes some getting used to. I actually use two keyboards, the Samsung Keyboard and also Spb Keyboard with the latter having the ability to get smaller to see more screen real estate. The keyboard just takes some getting used to.

Many people don't know about the mouse... I found a way to toggle it on/off that has helped basically make the device stylus free.

GPS... locked or at least is so far. While I am not really sure how well it would work compared to my external BT GPS that works great, it would be nice to have access to it. Just saw tonight that there has been some breakthroughs on this from the SAGE group... so it might be a mute issue soon. I've also seen a number of reports now that Verizon will be putting out an update Q1 2009 that will fix some things and unlock the GPS. Will see.

VZNavigator... tried it... POS .. would not recommend it to anyone. The idea of using the phone for navigation while driving is scary to me to begin with. You think trying to dial while driving is bad... I use a full sized GPS in my truck for navigation.

However, I need and use the GPS to get coordinates so that I can see where I've been, where I collected data from (Weather Data) and VZNavigator can't do that.

Accessories...

have some coming... one is a retractable data/charge cable that is supposed to work with both computers and UPS non-computer pwr sources. The other is a leather case... Both from BoxWave ...

I think the case will give the phone some protection. Tis a small device and almost slippery.

Some images:

1) Replacement startup screen
2) Today Screen
3) Today Screen showing Pocket Plus tab open
4) Sling Media... watching SciFi Channel (device looks better than the image).

I will be ordering the phone today (my Santa gift to me).... the phone is going to cost $149 via our corporate plan. I have an upgrade discount available on my second line which I use for a WWAN connection (USB720) but will activate the phone on my primary line when it arrives.

All of the reviews appear to be positive.... I've seen some comments that the GPS is locked, but I have not been able to confirm that. Past phones that have been locked have been able to get unlocked... hopefully if it is there will be a way.

Ref:
http://pdaphonehome.com/forums/samsung-i90...html#post766619

I currently use an external GPS device with my current phone but it would be much better with a built in GPS. I use it with a WM6 app that collects data off of a mobile weather station, picks up the current GPS coordinates and transmits it to my server for data collection and tracking.

The VZWNavigator software is worthless for me as I have a regular GPS system in my truck. Using my phone for navigation sounds like a traffic accident waiting to happen.

I am actually looking at getting this phone. I've been using a Samsun SCH-i760 for close to a year now and that has been my best phone so far.

I've got the Verizon rep calling me in the morning with our pricing on the Omnia.

I'm a bit surprised they didn't incorporate the Stylus into the phone (I seem to recall seeing one that did), but that is not that big of a deal I don't think.

I am a bit curious about the GPS. Most of the descriptions have referred to the VZNavigator software rather than the device itself. Is it accessible to other software?

I have Vista Home Premium on a notebook. Basically, everything that I use works with it. I don't have VPN that works, but at work, we use a Web SSL network connection and I have full access via it.

The only real issues I had was at the beginning when I first got it. I needed bluetooth, and there were no Vista supported Bluetooth USB supported devices. That is no longer true...

I have XPPro on my main desktop, and can't imagine moving that to Vista due to the very large amount of software I use on it. But for my portable office (I have a Verizon WWAN USB720 network device) and all of the software I need in the field, Vista works fine.

I don't see much point in getting Vista Ultimate for my needs.

If, I were using AT&T (I'm actually on Verizon), I would most likely use the Tilt. I have a friend needed a new phone and was told they should get the Centro since it was the best...

I've never heard of the it.

I did some searching but couldn't find any comparisons.

I know the Centro is a Palm OS not a MSMobile OS... Anyone look at both and can give a comparison?

I'm surprised anyone is still using one of those. That was my first "Smart" phone... I've had the SMT5600, Treo 700W and now the SCH i760 since.

I am personally using a SCH i760, LOVE IT very much... by far the best phone that I've ever had, so I am using Verizon which is associated with work etc... I also use a USB720 EVDO Rev. A WWAN device for my notebook, very very fast, and works great.

My wife and the rest of the family is still on AT&T er Cingular AT&T..

She has a Family plan and we have two add on phones with a 1400 minute plan. They combined use around 800 mins a month.

My wife has a Razor and really doesn't like it. She likes my phone, but says she won't use all the fancy stuff. She wants to get a BlackJack II.

I don't know anyone that has one... so I don't know how good it is.

I assume to make any use of it, she will need a data plan. She doesn't have any data at all right now. The data plan looks like it will be $35 more a month.

Only recently she started to really use SMS... her phone has keyboard and the BlackJack looks to have something easier to use... and with data, she could get access to some streaming media stuff. She works in kinda of a back room area with no Internet access so this would be good.

I use the WEB a lot and even use the mobile slingplayer as I have a slingbox in my office at home which is setup just for the purpose (best way to get baseball on the mobile or notebook).

The new BlackJack II has WM6 which is like mine.. which means applications would be similar if she uses any of them... She would be syncing to her own notebook, so there are no conflicts there. The ability to setup POP mail for her email would give her a ton more access than she has now.

Any suggestions on if this would be a good thing or would you suggest another phone instead?

Played with it for a bit.... thought it was okay.... a little slow to respond some times.

Didn't think it is worth $19.95.

Ran across a cool app that very easily makes a remote desktop like connection to your phone.

It was very easy to setup and use and worked great over a EVDO connection which is cool for me as the only sync I do is via IntelliSync.

I've tried it on both Vista and WinXP... with my Samsung SCH-i760

Took a look at it.... The manual is very sparse...

There is no support page stuff for it and the Report a problem doesn't really work properly.

What I was going to send was...

1) Change default picture. Picture is really nice, but no picture would be better than using the default of someone I don't know.

2) When you select a contact, going back should take you back where you were, not to the top of the list. Many times, I hit the wrong entry or there are similar entries.... Having to search all over again.

Other than that, it looks nice works good...

I've now had mine going on ... the second day... already, I like it a lot more than my previous phone (Treo700W)...

I actually got a head start playing with my Co-workers phone who has had it now for more than a month, he being new to smartphone technology had a huge learning curver to overcome. I actually played with some new software on my Treo before I ordered the new phone so I kinda knew what I wanted with it.

The transition...

The transistion has been fairly smooth... I have not bought any accessories yet other than the 2gb memory card (man how prices have fallen). I will be looking for a USB charger (would prefer a retrackable one though and they don't seem to be out there yet) and a car charger. I already know the ones from Verizon are junk and overpriced...

I will need a carrying case for it too, I think a pouch type will work best. My treo had a Krussel case which has protected it well, but I don't see how something like that will work with a slider keyboard phone.

The biggest difference for me is the lack of a Start Button on the front, yep I know there is one on the side and on the keyboard, but for one handed usage, it was easier to have it right on the front. That and the lack of the ability to use the keypad for selecting Internet Favorite sites...

But when I really get into a site and can use two hands, the slider is great. I don't have much of an issue with the Send button as I never use it. I kind of wish they just were not there. But I don't have much of an issue hitting them by accident. The power button also seems to be "far away"...

I haven't figured out why there are two batteries... I know you could use on in a situation where the battery has run out, but ... you have to plug the battery in to charge it unless there is an optional battery charter stand that will charge them separately. I've not even used the smaller one yet at all.

I'm still in the getting used to it phase... but like I said, I like it a lot. The larger, rectangle screen is nice too (unlike the square Treo screen).

Software List:

Intellesync Suite 8.0 Sync (work phone, they pay for it)
MultiIE (need the screen drag)
VirtualEarth (haven't done much with it as I don't have a working GPS yet)
Google Maps (the Tower GPS doesn't work with this phone or the Treo) but it is a wicked app.
DejaVU PocketTTY (I need remote SSH access from time to time)
Illium's NewsBreak (for when I'm in meetings and need something to do)
TCPMIP ... don't use it much
Resco Explorer 2007 (FTP Add in is a goodsend to getting files - I don't use ActiveSync)
Illium Screen Capture (Cheap, looking for another)
e-Mobile PocketStreamer (Not working, currently uninstalled)
JottoSoft Finger-Friendly.... just loaded, very nice.

Conflict Software - I tried the Spc Pocket Plus, looked really nice, but ran into one very big snag... that was the drag feature of MultiIE stopped working after I loaded it. I need that feature, so I removed the Pocket Plus package.

I think you will like the i760. Definitely the best PPC/Phone I have used. I recommend you hard reset it after you activate it. Just slide the keyboard open, press the red reset button down while pressing the center control key (middle of round directional pad). Always nice to start off with a fresh reset. Also Sprite is a nice addition - but you know that.

I have sprite, but I have not used it in a long time. Had problems with it when I got my Treo.

Might try it again. I also don't sync to my desktop (due to the wireless one).
