I currently have an SMT-5600 with ATT (Cingular). The contract does not expire until Nov, but I have a way that I can convert the account to a "Cingular" account, get a replacement cheap phone and drop the existing $80 per month plan to a $39 plan with 1,000 minutes per month and then give the phone to my daughter who needs a cell phone.

The business is ready to buy me what I want... and I am looking at this. Other possible choices are the Samsung SCH-i730, and the Verizon Wireless XV6700.

I'm curous what other SMT5600 owners think of the three and which ones they like better.

One need is the ability to use the connection to connect to remote servers (SSH).

Questions about Battery Life

Replacement larger batteries

Features that Verzon has turned off (and ways to possibly turn them back on).


BTW I don't care about Palm comparisons and I've never used a palm phone. I use my phone more like
a computer that happens to have a phone in it rather than the other way around.

2. There is a 700w battery replacement for more batttery life - check the Home Page News for the reference.

3. Smeg mentioned today that the Samsung SCH-i730 may soon be retired, even though it's a great device.

4. Not staying with Cingular? Not interested in the 8125?

We have many at work that have that device and like it.



don't really see what that point is... it doesn't seem to me to be much of an improvement over the 5600. My 5600 has worked very good and is by far the best phone I've ever had.

However, the 8125... has No keyboard, GRPS is much slower than EV-DO...

I do like GSM card that I can move from device to device, but ... I need more computer access. I will still have 4 other phones live on Cingular.

Just found info on how to enable tethering on the 700W too. that was one of the "disabled things".

This is the Cingular 8125. Be careful you don't confuse the Cingular 2125 with the Cingular 8125

The i730 is a very good device, my favorite to date. I am looking forward to Smegs comparison with the 700W. The one thing Cingular and T-Mo cannot give you is the EVDO connection speeds. Until they catch up on connection speed I would think Verizon and Sprint are a good business user choice and they have a number of the newer WM devices.

Agreed, EVDO is worth the switch to Verizon if you use any amount of data on your device. EDGE is a definite improvement over GPRS, but is still 1/10th the speed of EVDO. It is like the difference between a 33.3k modem, a 56k modem, and a dedicated T1 line. There just isn't any comparison. As you said, PDANet does enable the missing tether feature of the 700w. In fact, I'm using it right now with my notebook. My Pros/Cons comparison with the i730 should help you decide which is better for your needs. There are many Pros and Cons with both devices and your individual preference and needs will dictate which you should go with.

I've pretty much decided on the Treo 700W as most of my answers have been answered but I am looking forward to your review.

Would also be interested in what software tools people have put on theirs.

On my 5600, some software that I've purchased that I actually use were:

Xbar (use every day)
Papyrus (since it started in beta)
Facade (since it was in beta and now full version)
PocketMusic
Smartphone find
Smartphone Notes
SmartSSplus
SpashID
Sprite
CV series (document, image, worksheet etc)

I use the phone for online browsing about 75% of the time as a phone 15% and for other computer things 10%.

check my weather station status etc..

Looks like I will be selling the 5600 after I make the switch as my daughter certainly won't use its features. A cheap GSM phone on that account will work fine for her. She is an Ipod nut.

The Treo 700W was delivered today. Don't think it has the update in it though. That appears to have been pulled back from Palm.

Will take a bit getting used to the device.

My SMT-5600 will be up for sale shortly after I collect the pieces and parts for it..
