Windows Mobile for SmartPhone 2003 (and SE) uses either Multi-Tap text entry or T9 predictive text entry on the phone itself. Some phones use built-in or external keyboards also.

Multi-Tap

To enter text, you press each key as many times as needed to show the letter or number you want.  Ex. Mobile = 6, 6-6-6, 2-2, 4-4-4, 5-5-5, 3-3. Numbers are created by tapping through each letter on a key to the number which comes after the last letter. Ex. 5 = 5-5-5-5.

For common symbols, press the 1 button, this will deliver the following symbols: . , - ? ' @ : 1

Your current text entry mode is listed in the upper right hand corner of the screen as show in the red circle below. To change this entry mode, press the left * button until you display the desired mode.

Multi-Tap entry modes are the following:
abc - Multi-tap text input mode, lower case.
ABC - Multi-tap text input mode, upper case.
ABC - Multi-tap text input mode, caps lock.

T9 Predictive text

T9 uses a single tap per letter and predicts based on a built in dictionary, what word you are intending to type. If it does not guess correctly, you can scroll through a list of choices to find the desired word. By typing 8-4-3 "the" is the most common choice but you may intend to type "tie" or other words, arrow down and select the word you want. Ex Mobile - 6, 6, 2, 4, 5, 3

The T9 modes show in the upper right corner of the screen are the following:
t9 - T9 text input mode, lower case.
T9 - T9 text input mode, upper case.
T9 - T9 text input mode, caps lock.

Numeric Entry Mode

As it sounds, every press is a number. When in this mode, the upper right of the screen will display 123.

Symbols:

By pressing and holding the * button, you get the following window to pop up:

Here you have the option to select symbols. If you need a symbol that the 1 button in multi-tap can not provide, you can use this to add different symbols as shown below.
