I'm happy to report that I have a Garmin GPS10 operating over Bluetooth with Mapopolis on my MPX220.
The registry fix first described in another thread on this site is required:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\ControlPanel\Bluetooth.Values.IsBthVCOMActive => 1
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\ControlPanel\Bluetooth.Values.IsBthVCOMSetup => 1
Setting Mapopolis GPS COM Port: COM6
Baud Rate: 38400
I bought the "sensor only" version for $150 - it comes with no software, but to my knowledge Garmin doesn't make Smartphone software anyway.
The sensor itself is pretty solid and supposedly waterproof to some degree. One warning though, the sensor only unit comes with an automotive charge adapter - not a wall plug. At least the 5V@1A plug is fairly common.
I don't have experience with many other GPS recievers, so I can't comment on it's accuracy or reception relative to the competition, but my experience last night playing Frisbee in an open field and driving in a moderately heavy developed area (Boston/Brookline) indicated that this is a realistic option for navigation and recreation.
Thanks for the info. I'm ordering one.

I think regardless of whatever issue you are having, as a general rule you should re-pair the GPS reciever after you change the values in the registry.
As for why Mapopolis could not reconnect when you restarted the application is a bit of a mystery to me. As a test, I just opened Mapopolis and connected to GPS. Then disconnected, closed Mapopolis, and opened Bikedo, connected GPS in Bikedo, then disconnected and closed Bikedo. Then re-opened Mapopolis and reconnected to GPS, no problem. I did the same procedure with Mapopolis and OutdoorNavigator. Still no problem, so I don't think using other software with the GPS reciever causes any problems for Mapoplis.
I have also power-cycled my phone a couple times recently and I don't need to re-change registry values or re-pair the devices.
However, I did check my registry and noticed that the values for the Bluetooth keys were set to "2". I remember playing around with this when I first got everything running, but I can't remember why I have those keys set to "2". Anyway, you might give that a try (changing the Bluetooth registry values to "2" and re-pairing the GPS)
Good luck, let me know if you need any comparison testing.

What firmware are you guys using?
Yippie .. got it working.
Thanks
*fingers crossed* lets see if it works later

OK .. I think I am closer to getting it working .. most of the time ...
ActiveSync ... will screw with the settings ...
When I tried to activate the GPS after I used active sync .. it said the com port wasn't available .. did I want to do a softreset.
After that the values were hosed!
So I deleted the pairing with the gps and started over including reseting the registry keys ...
and it worked
I guess I need to do a reboot after I use active sync
grrrrr

Hello. Where did you guys get your mapopolis? which place is cheap? I've been thinking about checking it out too. buygpsnow.com has some good deal on gps too. Ebay is probably the cheapest place.
Just got the GPS-10 Garmin Bluetooth receiver and it linked direct to my MPX220 without having to edit the reg I do not have the map software yet as I am waiting for the TomTom Nav5 software tobe released sometime tthis month.
Why does the title say Mpx200? Typo?
Yeah, the "MPX200" was a typo, we're using MPX220's here.
Couldn't figure out how to change to topic heading after posting.
*Topic Title Corrected*
Not to beat a potentially dead horse here but.... what are your opinions regarding BT GPS units?
I once saw a review of different BT GPS untils (I think it was Tom's Hardware). If I recall the Tom Tom was very nice.
What is the selling point for you guys? I am partial to rechargable battery (Li-Ion), water proof/resistant and magnetic base.
Before I sink yet another wad of cash into smartphone stuff, I want to better understand what is available.
Thanks,
dave
Well I didn't feel like doing real work today anyway...so here's a list of specifications for the Garmin, TomTom, and Socket (see attached Excel sheet).
Frankly, since all the physical dimensions are reasonably same, I would base a purchase decision on the acquisition times.
I bought the Garmin unit, and while it's waterproofing and overall physical design are significant for outdoor use, waiting five minutes for the reciever to "warm up" is like waiting in the shower for your conditioner to soak in. I'm not patient enough for either.
You'd think I'd know how to attach a file by now...
Thanks a lot for the info! I was able to sucessfully pair my MPx220 with the AT&T 1.43 ROM to my Holux GR-230 BT GPS. I set both values to 1, the COM port to 6, and the Baud Rate to the designated 9600 that the manual included with the receiver stated it should be set at. I'm using Mapopolis as well. Works like a charm, thanks a lot.
Has anyone been able to get BT GPS and BT Activesync running on a phone? I am able to get one or the other, but it seems that the serial port setup is conflicting between the two. I can't seem to get both. Any help would be great.
Sorry Smeg nothing to offer, I sync via cable (for now).
Well I finally got my GPS10! I am currently running demo Maps on Mapopolis. I have the generic Moto 1.43 Firmware.
Cool program, but there are a minor few bugs to work out. Has anyone else had these problems?
In Mapopolis GPS Options: I repeatedly set the GPS Port to Com6 and it always seems to default back to Auto. Auto doesn't ever find the GPS.
In Mapopolis GPS Options: If I don't set the Port to Com6, when I hit start GPS it sort of locks up. It goes from not running to stopping.
Today, while using a stored route and GPS Navigating, I hit the down button to scroll the map back to where I came from, the screen flashed a brickwall looking pattern and Mapop shut down.
In the BT SerialPortSetup the Outbound COM port: checkbox clears itself occasionally. Not with every reboot and sometimes without a reboot???
Wasn't there a registry setting to change with 1.3? What was that for?
Don't worry too much about Mapopolis, that is a pretty old version designed before GPS was a REAL possibility on a WM Smartphone. However I have been beta testing with them for the last six months, and there will be a final release VERY soon and for those of you that have been using Mapopolis, you will be completly amazed.
