Mobile Gadget News :: Making Your Mobile Life Simpler _ Motorola Q _ Charging problem: charger vs. USB synch cable

Posted by: GeorgeG Jul 7 2009, 12:45 AM

It started out as the wall charger or car charger becomming intermittent. I found that if I shut off the phone, removed/replaced the battery, powered up the phone and plugged in the charger - it would charge. Then all of my chargers stopped working. I bought a new battery thinking that the charging circuit did not like the condition of the battery - no improvement. I bought new mini-micro usb adaptors - no improvement. I bought a brand new motorola original eq charger - no improvement. Then I noticed that when I use the USB cable to synch my phone to my desktop or laptop PC, the battery charges. This is a pain because it is slow and I am not always near this PC, I travel a lot. Now I have to use the USB data/synch cable and charge a handful of batteries to take with my and be stingy on the usage until I get back to one of my computers. BTW, no charging means no connection sound and no charging connection icon.

Does anyone know why the USB data cable will charge my phone when the wall and car chargers will not? Do the chargers get a bi-directional communication fom the phone preventing power or do the chargers power different pins than the USB? Is it a current level issue?

I would like to recreate the USB cable capability so that I do not have to carry a laptop around as a charger. Is it the lower current? Is it the "dumb" nature of the USB power? Perhaps I just need a simple 5V DC source, with connections to the same pins as USB power with a modest current limit?

Thanks,

George
