Phone SharpMT 3.2.1 - Beta 1

"SharpMT got started because I wanted a MT/TypePad specific offline blog writer for my notebook; when I started working on SharpMT over three years ago, there simply weren't any tools that were tied tightly to MT. Pocket SharpMT got spun off during SharpMT 2 because people asked me to do it... Pocket PC's were getting keyboards and WiFi so it started to make sense. Shortly after getting that out, the Phone-enabled Pocket PC devices hit and Pocket SharpMT went with them. Meanwhile, SharpMT went to version 3 with a new design and using the .NET 2.0 Framework... Pocket SharpMT eventually stepped up to the newer Framework as well.

And then Motorola finally got the Q out the door... a Smartphone based device with a thumb-sized keyboard... and, well, since I might have one someday, a new version of SharpMT simply had to be kicked off:

Phone SharpMT is for the Windows Mobile 5.0 Smartphone platform."

Thought I'd share since it's available for free biggrin.gif

It's available in 98052 this morning.

It's looking like the rebate is only valid if you get a $39.99 voice plan and a data plan. For the dude that asked about "just a phone" you can always get the plan and cancel it: $150 non-prorated in most of the US - some other states it's $270 prorated.

Basically, as per usual, they've made it prohibitive to buy just the phone.

I did check Florin's site: he does unlock this HTC model for other carriers, so I would imagine he could unlock this phone... I'm on T-Mo and they consistantly skip all the cool hardware for their customers. It's a tradition over there smile.gif

Although I did read here that there's an HP branded HTC model with WiFi coming to T-Mo USA... I'm sorta waiting to see what happens with that before jumping on this one.

i) ran aeconfig
ii) checked if still app locked with checklock.exe --- result still app locked (if you know that your phone is not application locked then skip this step)
iii) ran ResetSecurity

QUOTE (Sean @ Feb 23 2005, 11:21 PM)
A small enterprising group called Glarkware started putting out hysterical shirts with this on the front:

[attachment=172:attachment]

Unfortunately the were slapped with a cease and desist order and were forced to shut down the operation.  Personally I think it is really funny and too bad they are not still putting them out.

Someone could always set it back up on CafePress... I doubt they'd ever find out smile.gif

Actually, a car dealership in Connecticut leased some land for a tower for Nextel - there was no coverage in the area otherwise - and they turned it into a flag pole.

It blends in pretty well!

Yeah, that's $1 per MHz.

And I agree, this dude will charge $1400 - for about a month. I figure the MPx will be around $900 once phone companies start to get it; the 220 around $400. And don't forget that while you could get the 200 for free from Amazon and the like, other companies were charging $400 for it b/c it was without a contract and unlocked. This is normal, IMHO, and unless you work for a company testing it, I figure it's best to wait until it's "commercially available" in a widespread market.

Hi - this is all for FYI.

I had a first gen MPx200 (as in bought it the first or second week after they launched it) and it was suffering from strange SIM failures. I sent it back to Motorola with the complaint of "SIM Failure and the calls drop after 2 minutes when using the mono hands free kit". They sent it back to me as "unable to reproduce". After talking to them in harsh tones for 15 minutes, I sent it back a second time and was returned a refurb'd replacement.

The replacement has a loose hinge in all four directions - but once it's fully opened or closed it's solid so no big complaint - and came back to me SIM Unlocked. Booted OK to 2002; flashed OK to 2003. No SIM trouble this go around (and they accidentally included a Cingular test SIM in the phone, so at least I know they tested it!)

Placed a call with the handsfree kit - dropped after 2 minutes.

So, I'll be stopping by the local AT&T store to get a replacement stereo headset... that one has always worked (and I cut off one of the ear buds without any bad side effects) until I broke it. The moral of the story is that I shoulda just spent the $30 for the new stereo bit instead of $30 in shipping and $10 in Tums (thanks to Mot's first send-back).

At least the new phone doesn't have any scratches on it. 8)

...and this almost guarantees that I'll be serious looking into the 220 when that gets here late in Q4.

<soapbox>
Most people will tell you it's about the 220 or the MPx coming out soon... but soon is actually Q4 and possibly Q1. That's a far way out to not act on a software upgrade. In fact, to properly prepare for it, they would have had to start in Q1/2003 to get it to us now, which was far before the proposed laungh of the 220 and MPx.

Simple fact folks: Carriers care about airtime and "almost only" airtime. Their secondary love, which is slight, extends to their number of subscribers. Ever wonder why new customers that sign up get special deals and benefits and perks, while the loyal customer gets nothing but a monthly bill? It's because they want to see growth in subscribers. And that's usually because it will translate into more airtime. They've not yet figured out that there's cash to be made in downloadable games, ringtones, data services or (for GSM carriers) handset sales. Anything you see being done in these areas is being done half assed - talk business to a carrier and they talk airtime.

Sad, but true.

Protest all you want about the AT&T customer service and the lack of 2003 upgrade - it will make no difference because they are a carrier (and an old school one at that) and carriers just don't get it. They may have looked at it... "what would it cost to get this together? Wait, no new customers and no extra airtime minutes? Shelf it!"

You've got access to the bits - use them. Love them. Taunt AT&T with them, but that's about all ya can get. Sometimes, it's as simple as that.

Mine is in the shop at the moment - I got the dreaded SIM Failure problem the day before I flashed it to 2003. continued on thru into the new ROM so to me that screams Hardware. I also had a problem with the headphone jack dropping calls with mono-headsets (worked OK for stereo).

I sent it in early last week, so I should have it back in a week-10 days.

Actually, if I remember correctly, MP3's can be used as ringtones in WM2003. I know I had that "intro" SD card in there, with the free 10 MP3 songs... I could use them as ringtones, it I wanted to - they showed up in the list at least.

(I had to send my phone out to be repaired, seeing as the dreaded Gen-1 SIM Failure finally caught up to me (before I flashed it to 2003 too) and the headphone jack never worked right since the day I got it (it only held calls with the stereo headset - all mono headsets dropped calls in the 2nd minute of use))

Actually, this has been happening to me but only for the last week or two. I've had the MPx200 since it's introduction - unlocked it and ran right back to T-Mobile - and haven't seen it until recently. It usually happened during the night and I know that I have full ocverage in my house at all times - I still got calls and made calls inspite of the strength indicator.

I'm in Connecticut - although moving out of state in a day or two - if that helps any...

Nope - we need drivers for the SmartPhone 2002 and even now, people still can't agree if the slot is SD or SDIO. smile.gif

If I had to guess the next release of the PPC OS - I don't know if it includes a new release of the SP though: http://news.com.com/2100-1041_3-1015726.ht...html?tag=fd_top Old report, but the bits aren't out yet.

Speaking for myself the MPx(300) is bigger than what I want a phone to be. I've been completely satisfied with the MPx200's form factor - what I find to be missing is the SmartPhone 2003 software with the .NET Compact Framework. I couldn't care less about the cam, BT, or anything else the 220 has, but because it has the SP2003 OS, I'll still buy one.

(And the MPx100 is a bit bigger than I like for a candybar shape - I got spoiled buy the SE t68 and Nokia 7210/7290.)

I'd download the SmartPhone 2003 SDK from Microsoft as it comes with the complete emulator. They're at http://www.microsoft.com/windowsmobile

You have a local authorized Motorola repair center that is in business, answers the phone and actually responsive? I'm wicked jealous.

If I can get it thru TMo (and thereby at a discount) I'll get one through them.

If it comes with SP2003, I'll get one the day of release.

Given the problems I had with a first gen MPx200, I'll end up splitting the difference smile.gif

OK. I suppose that was rude, but this has been answered at least 20 times...

There's no proof that the MPx200 even has an SDIO card: every report conflicts it including those from Microsoft, AT&T, and Motorola groups. The only working theory is that the camera that people use in the slot must be using some SDIO type protocol.

Beyond that, the Socket card has no drivers for SmartPhone 2002. The Pocket PC 2002 won't work nor will the Windows Mobile 2003 - you need a SmartPhone 2002 driver for the MPx200.

Sorry about the first curt reply, but you might want to check the search system for SDIO - you'll come up with a blast of different posts.

Cheers.

That's a given and why unlocked/unbranded phones sell at a higher price point. Although in the SmartPhone I think you'd still have access to the standard DialUp Network configuration... hard to say. I don't use GPRS anymore and since I got out of programming mobile devices I try to forget that the phone has a browser wink.gif

So I'd welcome a TMo branded SmartPhone but it can be more limited.

Nah - just nursing my previous wounds by lowering my expectations. I'm still hopeful TMo gets off its @$$ and gets us some good hardware.
