_ T-Mobile _ PLEASE HELP!! MPX won't connect to free WAP!

Posted by: kermaphone

Hi There,

I've tried SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO many settings, and my phone just wont connect to any website, be it a wap site or not. I've confirmed with T-mobile that my free WAP is active. I've searched, read, tried and retried every setting I could find!

My current settings of the moment:
Under GPRS settings
Name: T-Zones WAP
Connects to: The Internet
Access Point: wap.voicestream.com
User name: (blank)
Password: (blank)
Primary DNS: 216.155.165.50
Secondary DNS: 216.155.165.50
IP Address: (blank)

Under Data Connections
Internet connection: Automatic
Work connection: Automatic
WAP connection: None Available
Secure WAP connection: None Available

I've tried it with proxy, without proxy, with auto detect setting on in IE, and with it off, with a GPRS entry and proxy, well basically I've tried every setup I can find on these boards!

This phone is an unlocked and flashed phone. Could the flashing have something to do with it? I've read a few posts from people where they say nothing they do makes it work, and some say it was so easy to get it to work!

WHAT AM I MISSING?

PUHLEASE help before I loose my mind!!

Thanks!

Under Data Connections have Internet Connections set to T-Zones WAP, all the rest set to none available. Have the auto detect settings in IE checked. Other than that, the settings you have look correct to me.

Tried that, no go.

Couple of questions...
When I try to go to a site, I get the Error Unable to Connect Message.
I then click OK, then Menu/refresh, and get this message:
ALERT: The URL is no preperly formatted. Please verify that you have entered the address correctly.

So, then I tried just entering the web site addresses like this: wap.yahoo.com (no http://), but I get the same alert then as well. I also tried putting the wsp:// before wap sites, with no luck as well! Not sure if there's something wrong with the way I'm entering site names? I see the G above my signal, so it seems that I'm connected?

Thanks!

Contact T-Mobile to ensure that free wap is set up on your account, sometimes you have to ask for it. This might not be the case but it is worth a shot, just let them know that you are unable to connect and leave it at that, free wap is intended to be extreamly llimited for T-Mobile phones, where it does not seem to limit my MPx200 in the least, so try to be discrete when talking to the CSR about your particular issue, just inquire if everything is set up on your account on their end properly...

did you try going to a normal web site using such as "http://www.msn.com"?

Just tried it, same error.

Eric, thanks, but I already contacted T-Mobile, and they tell me the free WAP is activated.

It's driving me bonkers...how for some people its so easy, and others its practically impossible! What could it be, I wonder?!?!?

Posted by: kermaphone

Quick question...could it be a generic firmware flashing issue...for those of you that have it working with these settings...do you have the generic firmware?

THX!

Posted by: smeg36

I have those settings with the AT&T firmware working great.

Posted by: GrYph0n

My settings are the same as well except my Secondary DNS is 216.155.165.51, I am almost positive that it doesn't affect anything, and I am using the Generic Firmware. I have no problems connecting to http, https, wsp, or wap. You may want to try not having your data connections set to automatic. Only time I ever have mine on auto is occasionally in the office where I don't get signal. After all it is free wap, so why worry with passthru on the computer. Ever consider a Hard Reset. I had similar problems when I was still with AT&T and the Hard Reset fixed it all up for me, but I would use that as a last resort...

My current CURRENT settings of the moment:
Under GPRS settings
Name: T-Zones WAP
Connects to: The Internet
Access Point: wap.voicestream.com
User name: (blank)
Password: (blank)
Primary DNS: 216.155.165.50
Secondary DNS: 216.155.165.51
IP Address: (blank)

Under Data Connections
Internet connection: T-Zones WAP
Work connection: None Available
WAP connection: None Available
Secure WAP connection: None Available

Still no go.

I'm considering the hard reset. I've already uninstalled MMS, and haven't done much configuration yet.

I wonder tho, if say I do a hard reset, then it works, then if I want to re-flash it to generic, will it not work again??

Posted by: GrYph0n

I can assure that GPRS works without a hitch on the Generic Firmware. I flashed my phone and removed MMS shortly there after, due to the slowing of my inbox. I am noticing that under data connections for your wap connection you have none available. I think that this may be your problem.

My settings are as follows...

GPRS CONNECTIONS:
Description: T-Mobile
Connects to: The Internet
Access Point: wap.voicestream.com
User Name:
Password:
Primary DNS: 216.155.165.50
Secondary DNS: 216.155.165.51
IP Address:

PROXY CONNECTIONS:
Description:T-Mobile
Connects From: The Internet
Connects To: WAP Network
Proxy (name:port): 216.155.165.50
Type: WAP
User name:
Password:

Settings-Data Connections:
Internet Connection: T-Mobile
WAP Connection: T-Mobile

INTERNET EXPLORER > MENU > OPTIONS > CONNECTIONS:
Tick 'automatically Detect Settings'

Well, some progress is being made, I think. I received a stock alert, and its the first one I've received since getting the phone, when on my previous phone I would get the alert every day. It came through right as I set up the proxy setting. Though maybe it was a coincidence, and I would have received it anyway? Are those alerts sent through a GPRS connection? Cause I'm still not able to visit web sites. Before though, I would get the error within about 5 seconds of it trying to read the web page, now it takes like 2 minutes before I receive the unable to connect message.

Posted by: kermaphone

Darn, I restarted the phone, and its giving me the error within 5 seconds again!

Does it matter that I have the description name as T-Zones WAP? Does it matter what you put in the description box?

Thanks for your help, by the way!

Posted by: GrYph0n

I don't see how that could possibly have any impact on the settings, that is just what you name it on your phone. I don't think that there is any relation at all to the network.

Something you might want to try though. Clear out all of your data settings and re-do them from scratch. Power Cycle your phone and then try to connect. Worth a shot, and it may save you the trouble of a hard reset.

Posted by: kermaphone

No such luck! Very frustrating.

Quick question before I try the hard reset...how do you format the web site address when typing it in?

Thanks!

Posted by: GrYph0n

My connections work on...

https://
http://
and of course //wap., //palm., //mobile, //www., etc...

give me a wsp:// address and I will give that a try.

Posted by: kermaphone

oh, and also, do you think that stock alert meant I was getting somewhere, or should I get those whether or not I have data connections setup?

Posted by: GrYph0n

I think that means some sort of progress has been made if you haven't gotten them before you adjusted your settings...

Posted by: kermaphone

Wahoo! I have connectivity!

I called T-Mobile, and hashed it out for a while. I let them know I was using an MPX200, and wanted to download some ringtones. I think that even though it said that the free WAP was activated, I think she did something else that worked...maybe it wasn't really activated. Anyhoo, now when I turn the phone on, there is a G in the top bar, when before the G wouldn't show up until I clicked on a web page, and the G would be above the signal indicator.

Now I just can't figure out how to close IE! LOL

My New and Improved WORKING settings:

GPRS CONNECTIONS:
Description: T
Connects to: The Internet
Access Point: wap.voicestream.com
User Name:
Password:
Primary DNS: 216.155.165.50
Secondary DNS: 0.0.0.0
IP Address:

I just called T-Mobile, told them to drop my 20 a month data plan (from my old Sidekick) and for them to activate WAP. Sooooo...he said it was all good and that WAP for good to go. So I have put in the EXACT same settings as gryph0n and I get nothing. I get the same error message as kermaphone. What is wrong? I have deleted all the old ATT stuff so whats up? I have not flashed to the generic firmware yet as I dont know how to do it. I have it, but dont know how to go about changing...someone help!

Posted by: GrYph0n

Tivofan4life, I had this problem when I switched to free wap as well. I was sure that everything was set correctly until about the fourth time I messed with the settings. All I had to do was change the Access point in GPRS settings from internet2.voicestream.com to wap.voicestream.com and all worked as it did on the unlimited plan from then on...

As far as loading the firmware, I am sure you will be able to find something in the Firmware Forum that will help you out with that.
