Interesting - I've seen at least one other "downgrader" to the "Q" . I'm re-evaluating my real needs at this point and thinking about whether or not I should go to the wireless sync scenario.

the unpatchability of my samsung i600 and DST woes finally drove me to get on the "Q" train. used the current $79 offer - not bad. they even slapped on the 2000 SMS allowance (after sales denied its existence), with a call into data central of course...

I've personally used all but the i830 (which is essentially an i730 without wifi and with international GSM roaming), and they all have their strong suits and faults. Of the 3 the one I'd recommend the least to someone who just wants to pick up a device and go is the 700w. It takes a lot of work to get it going perfectly because of the limited 32MB RAM. It's a toss-up between the xv6700 and the i730. I never did get to use my i730 with WM5 though, it came after I sold the device. I think with WM5 the i730 would win out though. The features are great, the screen is much better than the xv6700, and I personally like the vertical thumb board to the horizontal one because it can be used for dialing without touching the screen.

i wonder when the I760 will come out. i'm always "trailing edge" so i hope this pushes pricing down for the older phones dry.gif

Well, I'm glad I kept up with this thread. I asked that question back in post 12. I'm trying to help a friend pick a device right now and we're leaning towards a PPC so this is very handy info to know. Thanks for the clarity.

VZW has no less than four current PPC offerings - Samsung i730, i830 (cdma+gsm), XV6700 and Treo 700W! that's gotta be a tough choice. i like the xv6700 but haven't had any first hand experience with any of these!

Many of you veteran Verizon users may know that you can receive a text message sent from someone's email client to your "Verizon number" @vtext.com. I didn't know this until I recently wanted to set up text message alerts for my Ebay sales. I had forgot to change my old tmomail address at Ebay.

Your Verizon text email address is your 10 digit number XXXXXXXXXX@vtext.com. You can receive the test message from anyones email.

You can also send the text message from Verizons Verizon Vtext center. Your account charges apply for messages received. This is a simple and easy way to receive messages on the go from people that can't direct text message.

the reverse of this, sending an email via txt seemed to be very obscure information and i found it weeks after i had switched to verizon. the verizon sms gateway uses M-A-I-L (6245) how obvious is that? it works just like on gsm - stick the email address on the first line of the message. it's a hand trick to send an email message quickly using any cellphone...

I wanted to know more about the PPC xv6600 and found this "Cant seem to install software easily or the phone is completely locked from putting anything non verizion on it" That makes it sound like it has the same problem as the Smartphone you dislike. I don't know if somewhere there is a work-around or if the person who wrote that was the only one to experience it. I just thought it was worth mentioning here.

there's multiple levels of application locking. they are all based in the registry and there are now multi-tiered locks on smartphones (some types of apps disallowed). the samsung i600 would not even allow registry edits as smeg36 said (i tried). i don't know what type of locking the xv6600 has but i doubt it's the same level of lockdown. the registry edits are pretty easy to do and those are well documented and that i can deal with.

Yep, the i600 was locked down hardcore. They made it so you can't even edit the registry, so you can't undo the lock. Most newer Smartphones don't have that lock in place, or at least aren't so bad. The Q has some slight application lock, but it is easily removed with a simple registry hack.

i think it can be unlocked using the same technique the nextel i930 cowboys use but it's too hard and i found only one guy who had done it to a korean version of the i600. it's too hard/too much trouble for a phone nearing obsolescence!

as for smartphone vs ppc - i think what i'm beginning to realize is that i would really prefer a ppc. i think the treo 700w is top of the heap but still really pricey at this point. that's why the xv6600 keeps bubbling up..

I don't understand your problem. Is, or isn't, your phone "application unlocked" (as opposed to SIM unlocked)? Are you referring to your HP iPAQ h6500 that's listed in your profile or the i600 mentioned in your first post or the xv6600 the subject of this thread? I don't know anything about PPCs, but am just starting to get interested in them. Are you saying that all PPC come "application unlocked" from the wireless carrier (and/or manufacturer)?

What's the problem with opening files? Are you talking about from within a file manager?

I ask these questions 'cuz I have a smartphone and it is application unlocked so I don't run into what I would call "application locks". But, I wonder if we're talking about the same thing? Are you referring to the little message you get when you first install a program that asks if you're sure you want to trust it? After you accept it, you never see it again for that program - it just runs. So, I'm a little lost. Sorry. sad.gif

Also, again, on my smartphone, I can open files on my phone by accessing them via the file manager as long as they're associated with a program. I have a feeling this probably isn't what you're talking about. sad.gif

oops, sorry. i am using a samsung i600 now as my primary. i don't know if i ever set up my profile properly.

my first venture into windows mobile land was with an sx56 (which was a PPC). i could open most any attachment or file natively, word, excel and pdf's were high on my list.

i then tried an mx200 smartphone rather briefly then had a VOQ for the longest time. the voq had document viewers pre-installed, which was nice. when i switched to the samsung i discovered that there are no file viewers (i suppose you could purchase the viewers that the VOQ had) and then i discovered that most smartphones are application locked in the registry. certain types of software will return "can not install because it is not signed with a digital certificate". in fact i never get the message that asks if you want to trust the software.

sorry if this sounded confusing, i myself was blissfully unaware of this issue until i discovered that the samsung is locked down hard - can't do any registry edits whatsoever.

these application locks i am running into on the smartphone are starting to push me into PPC land. getting more and more attractive (even more than the smartphone Q). i liked being able to open files right on the phone with my old sx56 sad.gif

i found the secrets to decerts from the nextel forums. it seems i need a version 2.1 sprite demo (with cab that has verizon certs). rolleyes.gif i don't know if the evils of the newer versions of sprite backup are discussed anywhere around here but suffice it to say that certain registry "tweaks" are disallowed...

It's a similar form to the SX56. I think it's slightly larger, but not much. The added features make it worth the slightly larger size though.

that's big, it seems the $99 "Q" is still a good deal all things considered. although i'd love to get a 700w it's a little to pricey for me. i might go and get a Q if i have a really bad day with the I600. i'm also waiting for some kind of break with the new black "Q" coming out. there were some rumors of $50 Q price right around now....

yeah, the evdo is attractive. i did use an sx56 for a while but is that the same form factor? it thought it was a little smaller. i wish samsung would come out with a cdma version of their new "Q" killer that's currently a GSM phone...

price on these phones on ebay are wafting down. cheap extended batteries abound as well. anybody care to comment? my i600 is starting to feel creaky - although still more solid than my VOQ. sticking with Verizon for the time being...

In that case it probably is the driver. Spectec will probably tell you tough luck, I haven't actually seen a Smartphone that the driver will install and work with the wifi card in.

the reason i got the wifi was that i read somewhere that someone had tested a sandisk wifi on the I600 and it worked great. i think the I600 was the only smartphone in it's generation that had SDIO. the spectec is low profile compared to the other cards like the sandisk with the antenna portion sticking out...

The Samsung i600 was locked down pretty hard, and you can't even make changes the some of the registry. This includes the registry key that enables the application lock. With the Voq you should be able to edit the registry to unlocked it fully. The guide to do is can be found here.

i think it's beyond those reg keys. i edited them and it didn't do anything on the VOQ - came back with the same error. the test for unlocking was supposedly "doom" - it ran no problem. there's some other lock probably specific to drivers....

my samsung i600 is running wm2003 and allows other installs that are unsigned. i tried installing a spectec wifi card driver and it won't install because the driver is unsigned. i tried it on my VOQ same error. it seems both phones are only partially "unlocked". anybody know any workarounds?

ps. i wrote spectec hoping that they have a signed version...

i am switching because both my kids have a hard time getting signals with T-MO. everyone else uses verizon and has no problem. sprint is problematic as far as that goes. i don't really have a lot of use for data - aside from email and light browsing. I use tmobile tzones on my VOQ and works well enough for me. isn't there a verizon wap service as well? are you obligated to purchase data service if you get the Q via the special offer?

if i do have to bite the bullet on data, i probably will since i can use a 20% discount at work. my search continues...

thanks

Well, if you want a family plan the catch with Amazon is you are only allowed the MIR for one of the phones. The rest of them will be the pre-MIR price. You also have to sign up for a $45/month data plan to get that price. But if you are on a family plan and want to use data, it's going to be $45/month no matter what. On an individual plan you can get discounts on data with voice plans, but the family plan doesn't have that option.

arrghhh! i didn't know that about the data plan requirement, i was reading their brochure over and over and thought i could get the 10mb plan ($25) for one line.

do you have any recommendations for a smartphone on verizon - even older tech is fine. i have a voq right now and i want to stay on windows having abandoned palm a year ago. i see the samsung i600/i700's on ebay all the time although i would really like to be without a stylus (qwerty preferred).

Yup, I love my phone, though my carrier (Cellular One) refused to give me any help at all on setting things up for GPRS Internet since I didn't buy the phone from them.  However, I found what I needed through a Howard Forum.  I got mine on eBay (using eSnipe -- LOVE IT!) for $62.  The company charges $24.99 for shipping, however!  Anyway, a total of $89.99, and I think it's worth it.

most any network setting will be the same as on an MPX200 or other smartphone. good to have another VOQ owner on the board!

i guess they only do the provisioning on weekends. all my links work now! smile.gif

funny you should mention that, but yes i had accessed the t-zones page before.  and from frantically changing the settings all morning i got it to work again.  the difference is that now i select "connect using wap" in IE options.  i had it on "internet" before.  i had also redefined all my data connections (GPRS and Proxy).  not sure what happened.

to add to the FREE WAP discussions:

i spoke to 5 different tmobile reps on something weird i noticed.  some of the links throw me into the signup page which is a jsp.  one young lady suggested i was not having network problems and suggest i return my phone! sad.gif  anyhow, i finally got to level 3 (the guy in the basement with the wires hanging out his back pocket).  he told me there was a provisioning delay on the local servers.  my account had to be tagged as being a Tzone aka Tmobile Web (new name)  to get to these other URL's.  he said to call back in a few days if it persisted.  This tells me that everyone gets a limited version of Tzones for free.  There's several selections that work, even a wap yahoo messenger page.  The AIM one doesn't.

cheers.

Have you been able to load the T-Zones page on your Voq before?  Are you sure you have the right settings?  If both those question are yes, I would call T-Mobile to see what is going on.  Whenever that happened to me, I would call them.  Usually, GPRS would be down.  Once it wasn't, and they were able to fix it by doing a reset on their end.
