For some reason, my 5600 stopped taking a charge from the wall charger. It will, however, take a charge through a USB cable as long as it's connected to a computer that has Activesync installed on it, so for the past few months, I've just been plugging the phone into the computer to charge it... and have actually been dragging my laptop around as a phone charger because I was too lazy to order a new charger. I was finally about to order a new charger but decided to try the old one one last time. This time I put a voltmeter next to the phone at the usb input where the charger tip enters the phone and guess what... it registered voltage. So is this a software issue? The charger is obviously putting a charge out to the phone, it's just that the phone won't take it.

Best of luck to both of you guys. Thank you for risking your necks out there. We really appreciate it.

Be Safe,

Is there any way to share an internet connection with the phone so I can surf from my phone thru my cable internet connection? For example, will a bluetooth access point allow me to share an internet connection the same way a wifi ap would? If so, how do you tell the phone to connect to the web using the BT connection and not GPRS?

I bought my phone on ebay a couple of weeks ago, but tried to get the software anyway as well. I was able to download and install Clearvue on my phone, but it asks for the registration code. Westek was supposed to email it to me, but they never did. I tried it twice with two different email addresses and nada. Anybody else have this problem?

Cool. Thanks for the belt clip tips. I was thinking of doing something similar. Actually, I usually carry my phone in my pocket, and this phone is so tiny I'm a little worried about it slipping out. One of the nice things about the silicone is it would stick to my pocket better. On the other hand, that might make it that much harder to answer a call quickly. Not sure I really want to shell out 25 bucks for a piece of rubber either. Maybe I'll just get a screen protector.

Sorry, can't help you on the first question but I just got the 5600 myself and found this post on ringtones very helpful. The short answer is yes, you can use mp3 ringtones... although I haven't tried it yet.

I came accross this the other day and thought it looked pretty cool. It's a form-fitting silicone case for the SMT5600 that covers just about the whole phone with the exception of the screen and ports. I have something similar for my iPod and love it, but then again I don't have to dial phone numbers through a silicone case on my iPod. Anybody here use one?

That makes much more sense. Thanks for clarifying.

I would still be using it in a heartbeat if only I hadn't gotten so dependent on bluetooth with the SMT5600.

Ooooooooh! Don't say that. I just ordered the smt5600 on ebay and am having a hard enough time as it is coming to grips with the fact that I'll be replacing the mpx200. Maybe I'll keep it as a backup like you're doing.

This looks pretty cool... but I doubt you want to spend over $100 for it. Haven't come accross anything else like it yet but you could always put one together yourself with Radioshack parts.

Here's an RF radiation paranoia question. The 5600 and the c500 have different SAR ratings even though they are essentially the same phone. Is this just due to a difference in measurements by the FCC and their European counterparts, or could there really be a difference resulting from the fact that one uses the 850mHz band and the other the 900 band. The 5600 is rated at .61 w/kg and the c500 is rated at .297 w/kg.

Just curious.

I'm in the exact same boat as you. Love my phone but kinda want to upgrade already for the same reasons. I'm very close to buying the Audiovox smt5600. Looks like a lot of the folks here use that phone and are very happy with it. It also won Microsoft's smartphone of the year award, for whatever that's worth. There are a few of them on ebay for under $200 right now, so the price is right too. Basically, the only reason I didn't get one already is that I'm not sure I'm ready to give up the flip phone format.

Thought about the mpx220, but there seem to be lots of issues with that phone. The most common one I've seen is that the volume is too low. A firmware update supposedly addresses that but I'm still skeptical. I've done a lot of research on smartphones lately, and the 5600 really does seem to be the best one out there. Anyone else feel differently?

Sweet. Thanks for the info, that's exactly what I was looking for... although I guess I wasn't looking hard enough.

Great. I'll try that. I may just flash the phone to the 2003 OS while I'm at it, although I just found out that the 900mHz band still probably won't work anyway, which was one of the main reasons I was going to try it.

I really, really doubt anything like that will be coming. At least anytime in the near to distant future.

Yeah. Knowing Moto, near future=18 months and distant future=never. That would be a pretty damn hot phone though wouldn't it?

Oh. I knew TMO didn't use the 850 band so I assumed they used 900mHz. Guess not. So they only use 1900mHz... really? What about 1800mHz? I had looked for this info on their website but couldn't find it.

I still like the idea of having a 900mHz capable phone though for travel abroad. I was thinking of getting the c500 for this reason (I also like the Orange square much better than the Audiovox logo smile.gif ). Anybody here ever use the smt5600 in Europe?

Anybody here give any credence to the rumor that Moto will release a Razr smartphone running Windows Mobile this year? Didn't think so, but I just read about it here.

I was definitely referring to firmware for the JAM. I downloaded it from clubimate.com (you have to be a member to download).

Btw, I've noticed a few of you guys are using the SMT5600 with T-Mobile. Are you just making due without the 900mHz band, or do you know something I don't?

Actually, the reception is fine (I bought it with a T-Mobile contract so I get the 900 mhz), it's just that the call quality is pretty shaky (lots of echo) and the speakerphone is totally useless. I recorded a voicemail with the speakerphone in a quiet room with the handset just at arm's length and the message was completely unintelligible. It wasn't just that the volume was too low, although that is definitely a major problem as well, but the voice was totally garbled. I also downloaded and installed the latest firmware, which did fix a bluetooth issue but had no effect on sound quality.

Aside from the call quality, I've realized that I just don't like the PDA form factor or even software as much as the smartphone's. As small as the Jam is, it's still a bit bulky and awkward to use. I guess I just really like being able to push buttons.

Oh yeah, I knew there were a couple of details I left out of my original post. I have tried cycling the power on and off, but that doesn't seem to make a difference. Maybe a hard reset would help? Also, I'm still running 2002, but would like to upgrade if I decide to keep this phone... and I would be much more inclined to keep it if it weren't so sluggish.

I don't have a whole lot of apps on the phone (I'd be happy to list them if anybody wants to help troubleshoot) and as far as I can remember, I haven't removed any installed apps.

I sync with my email server manually, so I guess that's not the issue.

So you mean this isn't a really common problem? I guess that's encouraging. If nothing else helps I suppose I could always try flashing the ROM.

thx

Anybody have any idea why that stupid MS color wheel comes up every 10 minutes to basically let me know that the phone is thinking about something and can't be bothered to finish what I was doing for next minute or two. I've missed so many calls because the phone was in the middle of day-dreaming about something and wouldn't snap out of it's trance until I'd already missed the call. Not to mention all the times I try to write an sms and have to wait patiently to finish my message while the phone runs something in the background. I've stopped all programs and it still does this. What could it possibly need to do in the background so often? I understand this is an MS thing, but is there any way to change this? Any way to see what processes are running in the background and disable them if they are unnecessary? Doesn't this drive anybody else crazy?

BTW, I bought the imate Jam yesterday and it's going on ebay as soon as I get the chance (J&R has a no return policy on phones). Anyone want it? I don't recommend it personally, but figured I should ask.

Is the speakerphone as good or better than the one on the mpx200?

I just bought the imate JAM hoping it would be a good upgrade from the mpx200, but so far the call quality is pretty crappy and the speakerphone is a joke. I't not even as loud as the moto's regular earpiece volume. The sp3i is supposed to be a great all around phone, but I'm a little skeptical of HTC's ability to make a good sounding phone right now.

thanks,
james

PS Anyone else out there using the Jam? Am I missing something or does the phone part of this pda really suck?

Thank you. If I ever get the guts up to try this external antenna mod, I'll let everyone know.

Cool. I searched the forums and the web but nothing turned up. Wraith, would you please direct me to that picture with the antenna circled if it's still up anywhere?

thank you,
