Mobile Gadget News :: Making Your Mobile Life Simpler _ Samsung Blackjack _ Newbie question

Posted by: HogarthOK Jan 8 2007, 03:51 AM

Hi guys..
new Blackjack user here. So far, I'm finding a lot to like about the BJ, but I have a few issues.
Maybe you can help?

1) How do I turn off the startup sound? It's really loud and really annoying. (Dropping the volume would be acceptable, too, as long as it were permanent.)

2) Is there a way to select multiple messages in, say, an email box?

3) I've tried setting up Xpress Mail a few times (with Gmail). While successful, I get too many messages (e.g. old ones that are marked read in Gmail that XM thinks is new).
I'd like to get the "Get Xpress Mail" link *off* my start screen (when not installed), or get the *Xpress Mail Calendar* links off (as XM doesn't sync with Google calendar).
Any ideas?

4) Why, when not using XM, can I specify a "check email" period of no less than 15 minutes?
I'm paying for unlimited data -- if i want to check every minute, that should be my prerogative.

Thanks in advance.

1) In most cases this requires a registry edit. You'll need a registry editor like PHM or Resco. http://www.mobilegadgetnews.com/index.php?showtopic=12331&hl=startup+sound for more details on how to silence the annoying startup sound.

2) No. Many people have been annoyed by that one. It's a limitation of the WM Smartphone platform right now. You can on the PPC using the stylus, but not the Smartphone.

3) I've never personally used Xpress Mail. If I was using my Gmail account I'd simply set it up to just POP in Messaging. The less gears there are in the process the less that can go wrong.

4) Another limitation of the WM Smartphone. I'm not sure why they have it set that way in the Smartphone. On the PPC you can set it up to every minute. Sorry.

The value of that control panel key on my blackjack is already "*none*".
Can I turn off the OEM video "WOOOOOOOSH" altogether?

(I've got PHM.)

I'd try deleting the value all together to be sure nothing is coming on at start. Without having a Blackjack in front of me it's difficult to say where the exact value is. You may need to poke around the Sounds a little and see if you can find any other startup related values. There's a way to change some of the startup screens, but it's complicated and I don't think it'd work for this one.

To delete the whole 3G image and sound, just delete the DLL value under HKLM\System\Startup and HKLM\System\Shutdown.

To create your own startup/shutdown image, follow this link-->http://www.mobilegadgetnews.com/index.php?showtopic=13513

See, a fellow Blackjack user is way more knowledgeable in this area than I am. Very informative post Skippy, thanks.

BTW, Welcome to MGN. These guys are full of knowledge and very helpful. With or without a Blackjack.

The annoying "whoosh" startup sound can be turned off without any registry edits on the Blackjack.. I believe I supressed the sound under "settings" - sounds - other sounds and setting keypad, warnings, explanation, and question to none. I'm not sure which one is the one for the whoosh sound, but that seemed to work for me. I hope that helps.

But you defnately don't need to do a registry hack.

I'm using PHM .. and it won't let me edit those keys.
Ideas?

You're trying to edit/create "Values" and NOT Keys. Think "Keys" as if they were folders. When you reach HKLM\System\Shutdown\1, hit the left soft key on your phone that says "Values" and then you will see the DWORD value "DLL". Then enter in to edit or delete so you can create a new STRING value.

Download the SurrealNetworksAppsUnlock.cab file, run it on your Blackjack, and then reboot. What the .cab file will do is edit the security policy registries so that you can make edits in the registry and run unsigned programs on your cell phone.

You might also want to buy a backup program to protect your data, such as Sprite Backup.

TIP: Remember that the file have to be in your phone and NOT your storage card. The files have to be in 320x240 .gif format. To make it easier on yourself, just save the files in your "windows" folder and make the image names easy to remember, for example: \Windows\Shutdown.gif

Don't forget that you use backward slash and NOT foward slash.

I just set the System sound volume in my default profile to Off. This got rid of the startup and shutdown sounds.

Hey The Undude - this is probably what you did. I tried your suggestions, and it didn't work.

Hi -

Looks like something got "changed" somehow on my Blackjack - and the Systems Sound is back on at Start-Up and Shut-Down.

I feel liek I'm having a senior moment, I can't seem to find the System Sounds option to set to OFF.

Help?

To be honest, I don't know. I spent that last days looking and I don't get it.

Aloha...

A year and a half later, for the benefit of other new Blackjack II owners like me, it is as stated above, the System Sound profile:

Settings --> Profiles--> Normal --> Menu --> Edit --> (Scroll down to the last option) System sound volume --> Set to Off.

I just tried it (712/08). So far so good but I don't know if it affects any "essential" sounds. At the moment, the startup and shutdown silence is beautiful.

Thanks so much for the tip!

Aloha Part II...

As one might suppose, I'm discovering that ALL the system sounds are turned off with the technique above. Oh well, it was nice while it lasted. On to the registry... ; (
