Mobile Gadget News :: Making Your Mobile Life Simpler _ Other SmartPhones _ Big Voq problems

Posted by: zul8er Aug 30 2005, 06:30 PM

I have had my Voq for about 6 months and has been working fine. I bought it unlocked and unrestricted. I updated my firmware about a month ago to v2.6.2.4. And now this past weekend it just really started running terrible. I first noticed it would make any phone calls, but my GPRS was working fine. And then on sunday, completely lost phone and GPRS and started getting unknown sim errors on occasion. But I could restart and it would find T-Mobile and the GPRS, but not any communication beyond that. Now it will sit on T-Mobiles network for about 5 minutes, then leave that and get on a "home network" for about 15 mins and then drop the signal all together. But talking to T-Mobile when my phone says no service T-Mobile can see me connected to them know matter what my phone says. I can send text messages, but no conformation that they are sent, phone locks up soon as you push call. If you call my Voq from another phone, the screen lights up like it always did when something came in, but doesnt say what it is, and will go strait to voice mail.

My question is, how do I unlock my phone again, and if at all possible how do I downgrade my firmware? Do you think that new firmware put a partial or a full sim retriction on and it is just now cutting me off?

The Voq came unlocked straight from Sierra Wireless, so there is no unlock service available for it. No amount of flashing the ROM will ever lock the SIM though, so that isn't the issue. It could be software issues, which would be fixed with a hard reset. You can find directions to do so http://www.mobilegadgetnews.com/index.php?showtopic=7304\. Warning: It WILL erase everything on your phone. If you don't want everything erased, get Sprite Backup and use it prior to doing a hard reset.

Not sure if you can reflash or flash a different ROM on the Voq. I only had one for a week, and didn't test it that much. Sorry I don't know what else to tell you.

I would try a flash. You will be able to flash with the same or a higher level ROM. You will not be able to flash to a lower level unless you send it to VOQ.

You can get the software here: http://www.voq.com/site/support/downloads.voq

I still use my VOQ A10 as my backup phone.

Also, I did have to send a phone for repair to VOQ and they were pretty quick to get it back. If the flash doesn't respond to a flash I would call their service for an RMA. More than likely you will get a free repair.

I have tried to reflash, but it just says my phone is up to date and quits... is there a way to say force it to reflash?

I suggest you call VOQ it is toll free. They have been helpfull in the past and you can talk with a tech guy about your issue.

Technical Support:

North America Tel: 877.921.2424
Email: support@voq.com

They had my phone for less than a week for a repair.

You do know that there are a selection of different upgrade firmwares for this phone, and the upgrade version you use must be for the existing version in your phone? Using the highest number upgrade will not work for all phones.

There is a table to help you choose the right one on the Voq upgrade webpage.

Reviving an old thread here: I recently purchased a Voq A11 on ebay for $40. Nice deal. The seller said it would occasionally drop a signal and need to be rebooted. Just to be certain, I'm wanting to flash the firmware. It already has the 2.3.2.4 firmware on it, which is the most recent version for this phone. I downloaded that version anyway to try reflashing it and get the same message zul8er did, it's up to date.

I tried extracting the update and altering the ROM numbers found in the VoqUpdate.ini file to 2.3.2.41, but anytime the file is altered the VoqUpdateWizard.exe will give an error saying the VoqUpdate distrabution has been damaged. I tried running the update, editing the file, then flashing the ROM, but apparently it had already read the .ini file when it opened.

So, does anyone have any idea how I could force a flash?
