Does This Upgrade Contain Fixes Mentioned With The GB4 For My SGH-i607 That Was Released Last Year?

If I Decide I Do Not Like The Update For My SGH-i607, Can I Reload The Old GB4 Software?
It is not recommended to regress backwards to a previous software load. Any attempts to perform a regression may render the handset inoperable. The GB4 S/W has been replaced with the HA1 on our website.

Currently, there are no plans to release Windows Mobile 6.1 for the BlackJack.

Now that I've done this upgrade, I'm not convinced it was worth the bother. As I had not made any incremental updates to my Cingular Blackjack, this "catch-all" update to WM6.0 gives me those - so, maybe that's a good thing.

First impressions of WM 6.0

- The font used is smaller, and maybe clearer. Web page text now is really increadibly variable. On some pages it's tiny. On others it's huge. This creates a shoddy impression.
- I've not been able to get the phone to recognize some of the custom sounds I've created - and that the BJ WM5.0 would 'see.' For example, the Wake Up Alarm is not seeing an mp3 file I used previously. Ditto for the phone sounds... (anyone got a work around?)
- I've noticed IE seems to 'hang' a lot whereas that never happened before.
- The phone apps seem to use more memory that before.
- Navigating up and down a webpage by holding the D-pad 'up' or 'down' is changed so that movement starts slow and jumps up the 'fast'. It's annoying to me as it starts so slowly.
- in 5.0 on the Blackjack a user could specifiy the volume of individual sounds and alerts. This was a cool featre that is no longer available.

On the plus side...

- Self-location now works in Google Maps. Too bad it is rarely very accurate.
- The basic commards and menus are pretty much the same as before. Playing with the new BJ II w/WM6.0, you'll notice how they've changed a bit on the new device.
- I get to keep the scroll wheel, and side-monted "back" button that I like so well. The BJ II doesn't have either.
- It's nice to be able to sync up mobile Favorites now.
- Adding Office apps may prove to be useful. We'll see. I just don't anticipate using them much.
- Adding Telnav services maybe a useful addintion. I may give that a spin.

Bottom line: if you're really curious, of course you will no be deterred. But in my personal opinion, WM6.0 does not offer a big improvement over WM5.0 on a BJ I. It's almost as if the new OS is a little constrained on this platform that was originally built with WM5.0.

But that's just my opinion. What do you think? What are your impressions and experiences?

I am downloading it right now. Hopefully I get a better review out of it. If now, oh well...

Does the update make the BJ similar to the BJII or will it still be two completely different phones?

Thanks for the info, Undude. I have the update DL'd, but given what you're saying I don't feel a compelling need to update.

OFFICIAL UPDATE

Well, as promised, I am making my official review of the update.

SIDE NOTE: Some of may have noticed that I have been MIA (if y'all cared) and my only excuse is that school is whooping my butt and my BJ has been flawless. However, I don't tweak like I used to. In fact, I haven't really used the BJ to its full potential. It has been used mainly for emails, internet, texting, and basic calling.

Review:
As far as bluetooth, I haven't really noticed any SIGNIFICANT improvement except for the fact that the audio through the head set seems to sound clearer and my callers noticed I am a bit clearer. IE speed is roughly the same on 3G. The text is clearer in my opinion both on the phone and IE. The TeleNav ain't all that bad. It really only gives you step by step directions, just a tad better than the Live Search program. For an extra $10 ($9.99 if you really want to get anal) a month you can use it to its full potential as a GPS navigator. I am contemplating that. The basic homescreens are a great improvement. Texting has some slight changes. For example, instead of clicking the Left Soft Key to reply to a message, you now have to click the Right Soft Key to navigate thru the menu in order to click "Reply". In its old place is now the "delete" option. Icons are cooler. Email through POP3 does seem a bit faster. Battery seems pretty good. I am using the original thin batteries, from 06:00 through 20:00 and it has barely down to three bars. The small OFFICE Package is actually beneficial to me now since I am student. I can edit notes on the fly.

Overall, I like the update. Seems stable, replaces my need to get the BJ-II. If YOU really want to do something different to your BJ, I don't see a problem with this update.

NOW FOR SOME TWEAKS!

So you got that cool ringtone that you love. You know, the one that sings "My milkshake brings all the boys the yard..." You select the song to be used as a ringtone, but the phone won't let you because its OVER 300k.

SOLUTION: With a registry editor go to:

\HKEY_CURRENT_USER\ControlPanel\Sounds
Switch to "Values" view-->Look for "FileSizeLimit"-->Edit "Value Data" to 429467295-->Save-->Soft Reset

The large number is the maximum file size limit. Search for my Splash Screen edit tip to get rid of the ATT splash at startup and shutdown.

Enjoy!

I wanted to know if anyone who has done the upgrade is using or had been using the intshrui.exe to tether your phone for Internet access.

If so or even if not is that still included in the WM6.0 Update?

I use that extensively with my Data package and i am about to travel.

Any experience with this is much appreciated.

I may start a new topic later but i hoped since this was one of the first that came up on Google that it may help others who are curious as well.

This above link seems to have answered my question.

Seems there is a few work around's posted on the Internet, all involve re-adding the intshrui.exe program

However i would still like to know if this official release does or does not include intshrui.exe.

Yes and no. Cingular attempted to cripple that feature. But not entirely. It still under the Windows folder. You just create a shortcut to it and place the shortcut in the Start Menu folder. I use it as well, it works pretty well.
