ttachment=3690:harber14..._Mobile_.jpg]Attached ImageI missed my first Ur Quattro and sold it about 6 years ago. I found this one back in Vermont and they are shipping it out now. This one has the motor upgraded to a MC dual knock sensor versus the old CIS motor. Should be fun. Of course hands free only on the Windows Mobile phone while driving this one.

Microsoft Homeserver Update available in Non-English Versions

Posted by abatis, Aug 7 2008, 12:19 PM

MS Homeserver is one of the better products from MS in years. I like having my family machines backup every night and the HomeServer is great for sharing photos, files etc. Homeserver also allows you to do things like remote start a machine and shutdown. MS just announced German, French and Spanish versions. The direct links are provided below.

The English version of Windows Home Server Power Pack 1 was Released to Manufacturing (RTM) on Monday, July 21st, 2008. Today, the Home Server team is pleased to announce the public availability of German, French and Spanish localized versions of Power Pack 1. These versions are available on the download center and can be downloaded from the following links.

German: http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details...;DisplayLang=de

French: http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details...;DisplayLang=fr

Spanish: http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details...;DisplayLang=es

If you encounter any difficulty downloading, installing or removing a prerelease version of Power Pack 1, please use connect feedback items to report the problem. We will continue to collect and review feedback items until Power Pack 1 is available via Windows Update.

Once Power Pack 1 is available via Windows Update, we will be closing the current beta program down. But that doesn't mean we don't want to hear from you!

Vista Repair Actually Works

Posted by abatis, Jun 8 2008, 02:40 PM

I have bashed the Vista operating system from time to time and have to admit I use Windows XP Pro as my main OS. However, I installed Vista Home Premium on my youngest sons computer and it has kept him happy until a recent boot error occurred. I tired the usual F8 and "restore last known good whatever" to no avail. I really did not want to do a re-install and I was not feeling up to doing a restore from our Windows Home Server. A little Goggling found the site http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/tutorials/tutorial148.html on "How to Use Vista Repair". I followed the directions and ran Vista Repair from the install disk. Vista Repair found the problem and automatically repaired the installation. The system now boots and works great. I have to admit that the Vista Repair function is very slick and maybe Vista isn't all that bad after all - for my kid.

Sprint Upstage in North Dakota for Torture Test

Posted by abatis, Nov 13 2007, 05:34 AM

I shipped my wife off to North Dakota with a Sprint Upstage phone for a north by northwest torture test. First of all GSM coverage is sparse or non-existent in most of this ND country so her T-Mobile phone might as well be shutoff and forwarded to a CDMA provider like Sprint. She arrived in the vast nothingness and the first thing she noticed was a constant searching by her GSM phone for a network. She had been warned. She took care of that with a *21 cell number forward from T-Mo to Sprint. She turned on the Sprint Upstage and network reception pegged 5 bars and the sound of her voice was sweet. She uses a unlocked Cingular 3125 as her main phone on T-Mo. However she needed the Sprint Upstage to stay connected in North Dakota. If you really want 100% coverage in the US I think Sprint or Verizon CDMA is the ticket. Thanks to Sprint I can still talk to my wife while she is on assignment in North Dakota.

Kudos to Verizon Customer Service on Samsung i760 Purchase

Posted by abatis, Oct 22 2007, 02:59 PM

I decided to try the Verizon Samsung i760 out and ordered one on-line using our corporate discount program on Oct 19. Later, on Oct 20, I received an email that I had mis-entered my credit card number and I should call 800-922-0204 to finish my order. I called the 800 number and went through all the ques. I ended up talking with an actual American-English speaking customer service representative named Brian. I bring up the American English speaking because the times I have called Sprint customer service I generally end up in an Indian call center and I have a hard time understanding the Queens English via an Indian accent. No knock on the Indian customer service people, I just have a hard time understanding most of them. Anyway, Verizon Brian was very helpful and openly discussed how impressed he was with the i760 when Samsung came in and demonstrated it the month before. He is a Samsung i730 user and was looking forward to upgrading to the Samsung i760. The only rub is Verizon employees aren't allowed to buy the Samsung i760 yet. He said the only peculiar thing about the phone for him is the stylus slides in to the side of the phone not from the top. I think I can get use to that. Anyway I have 30 days to see if the Samsung i760 is worth an extra $30/month over my Sprint Sero plan.

Waiting for Verizon i760

Posted by abatis, Oct 10 2007, 03:12 AM

I have been waiting for over a year for the Verizon i760 WM6 device. It appears to have all the features I want, however, other devices like the HTC Touch are tempting. In the interim I have been using the Sprint i830w. This has been painful as I have had to replace two devices do to malfunction. I look forward to Oct 19 and the release of the i760. I have decided to touch this device before I buy it. Given the number of Windows Mobile 6 devices out there I owe that to my self and the MGN readers.

Windows Home Server Going Gold and is Worth a Look

Posted by abatis, Jul 22 2007, 08:06 PM

I have been a beta tester for Microsoft's new Home Server product for the past 5 months and can say that it is a great package if you have multiple users at home. Windows Home Server features a very easy setup that most any parent could handle. What I really like about the Home Server is the piece of mind you get from nightly backups of all your machines. In addition, you can share photos, music etc., with any machine on your network including your Xbox360. I am also able to access the Home Server files from my Linux box but it will not backup a Linux machine. The backups are very compact as Microsoft employs their cluster management system. It is a very clever backup scheme and it works well. Home Server also allows you to connect to your machines from a remote web browser if you turn on Remote Access. The official features include:

Protect the things you care about
Keep all those digital memories safe for future generations with features like automatic daily backups and full system restore.

Connect with your friends and family
Share your photos, music, movies, and other files from a single, central location that everyone in your home can get to. Friends and family can see and share any files you want, whether they're in another room or another country.

Organize everything all in one place
This smart hub helps your family organize all your shared files in one place. Windows Home Server cuts down on clutter and brings order to digital chaos.

Grow into the future
You can add more space easily whenever you need it, so no more hard choices about what to keep and what to delete. And new products and services will be added as Windows Home Server keeps growing and getting better.

My beta license will expire in the next month or so but I plan to buy the Home Server product if the price is right. I image a number of vendors will offer Home Server box's all setup and ready to go. Otherwise you will need a spare 64bit box to run the Home Server on. Barebone 64bit boxes are pretty cheap these days. Also, you run the Home Server "headless" (no screen, keyboard or mouse) so no investment in those items are needed.

Check out the Microsoft Home Server

If you are a beta tester be sure to sign up for a livenode address and get your preferred address reserved.

I also suggest you check out the helpful Home Server add-ons people are developing. Check out We Got Served.

OpenMoko's Neo 1973 the new rival for iPhone

Posted by abatis, Jun 11 2007, 03:01 AM

There are more and more smart phones that are supposed to beat iPhone announced. And here is the new Neo 1973 Linux based smart phone that has been created earlier and is the rival of the iPhone. Well, it appeared last November so it is older then iPhone. However, it is not worse and has one very important advantage that we are going to talk about later. iPhone has a very similar interface to the Neo's one and does not differ much from it. If you look at the two phones placed on the table you would think that they are made by one designer. The color of edges and even the color are very similar. They have different shapes and sizes. iPhone is just slightly smaller than Neo 1973 and it is also thinner. iPhone measures 115 mm x 61 mm x 11.6 mm while OpenMoko Neo 1973 120.7 mm x 62 mm x 18.5 mm. As you see there is only big difference in thickness. However, thicker phone does not mean better phone.

The corners of the Neo 1973 smart phone are rounded up and this makes it look smaller than it really is. And not so round corners of iPhone do not cancel its size out. However, iPhone is not that big and it does not need such effects.
